Somerset / George SANSOM, Henstridge/henstead?
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 15:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to track down my ancestor George Sansom but have been totally stuck until the other day when I found his incredibly informative transportation record (thank you Tasmania archive office) this stated his place of origin as Henstead near Sherborne. Now I haven't been able to find such place and please move this if I am wrong so I am wondering if the record gives the place name wrong and if it is Henstridge?

It also said B. (brother? ) Alex and John presuambly for next of kin.

He was a widower who left five children in Wincanton.

What I need to know is if it is Henstridge and if so his birth details of anyone has any ideas? I did find an Alexander Sansom in Sherborne at around the right period and there is also a John Sansom in Henstridge at the right time.

George is around 40/1 in 1844.

Can anyone help with suggestions?

England / my mystery Bennett!
« on: Tuesday 12 December 06 19:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William Bennett who is defying my attempts to find him.

He appears on the 1881 census giving his birth as India 1829, so i search everywhere and in every census search and he doesnt appear anywhere else. However I know his daughter Elizabeth is born in Bristol in 1860 so he must have been around somewhere!

Now whilst trying once again to pick something up i found a William Bennett (right age) living in Rustington with an Elizabeth born in Bristol (right age again) and even a welsh wife (legend holds that my nan had welsh roots) one problem, it says he was born Gloucester Patching. So why can't I find Patching in Gloucester?

I could be barking right up the wrong tree here and trying to make square pegs fit round holes but has anyone any ideas wether it existed? I keep wondering if the elusive Mr Bennett didn't actually put his correct birth place down!

sorry if this is a bit confusing I'm just frustrated! :D

Dorset Lookup Requests / missing ! 3 Taylor sons 1881
« on: Wednesday 01 June 05 11:19 BST (UK)  »
Any suggestions where I can search for three Taylor sons, Edwin Taylor (20 b Wimborne), Albert  R Taylor (18 b Parkstone) and Ernest G (16 b Wimborne) who are all missing from the 1881 census. Their mother, Ellen Taylor died in 1879 and i believe their father Edwin Taylor died sometime previously. Their sister Annie is staying with their paternal uncle on the night of the census. I have searched amongst the records to see if they are staying with either set of grandparents and have drawn a blank. Ive come to the conclusion that they are possibly out of the country on the date. If so anyone know how I can trace them? All three are seemingly alive in 1891.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Legg: Christchurch /parley
« on: Wednesday 27 April 05 19:20 BST (UK)  »
Ive been researching my Legg ancestors from Christchurch and Ive got back to George Legg  and Ann Tanner who were married in 1816, but although I suspect that George's father is Arthur Legg who lived at West Parley I have been unable to prove it! There is also a George Legg living in West Parley at the same time and I believe them to be brothers.  However I have a hunch that both came from the Ringwood area but to date have not been able to find out anything else at all.  If anyone has these names in their research I'd be grateful if you would contact me. The family names include George, Stephen and Arthur which seem to be repeated in each generation. (mind you who hasnt got a George in their family!!!)

Dorset / Corfe Castle : STOCKLEY
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 17:37 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to unravel my Stockley ancestors. Not an easy task when half the village appears to be one!

I am specifically interested in Thomas Stockley. There are two...both born within months of each other although i believe that on the 1881 census the birth date of 'mine' is wrong. After checking and rechecking the parish records online I think mine is born 1829. If anyone is also researching this name could they let me know if they have any information as at the moment i  feel like i have the edges of a jigsaw filled in but someone has hidden the final pieces. The Thomas Stockley I'm looking for married Mary from Kingston.
