Berkshire / The Morton,Slann & Nash families, Beggars Bush, Sunninghill.
« on: Saturday 27 August 11 20:55 BST (UK)  »
My GG Grandfather William Morton married Hester Slann on 25th September 1844. They seemed to live mostly around  Beggars Bush in Sunninghill and Old Windsor.A family story relates that Hester's family were involved in a pickle compant in Virginia Water that had a horse and carriage as its logo.
In the 1851 census William and Hester's return has a Hester Nash with them. She was born in 1794 and is classed as an aunt and that she was a 'proprietor of houses'.
Does anyone have any information on the Slann family, the pickle company and Hester Nash?
   Thanks,Johnee.

My 4xG Grandfather was christened James Sobiesky Hall on 14th May 1737 at Stanton Lacy near Ludlow.Neither his father, Isaac or mother, Frances Pearce had the Sobiesky name.So can anyone offer any clues as to why a Polish name would enter the family line for one generation?I've also found it spelt as Sobeasky.

Shropshire / Unknown placename.

Hi,
In the 1851 census (RG  H0107  Piece 1980  Folio 307 Page  10) my 3 x Great Grandfather, Isac Hall (b 1873) put Strilary,Shropshire as his place of birth.
Now,I've never heard of this place, so does it exist or is it an old name for a current town/village or did it get lost in translation between Isac and the census taker?
Any thoughts and/or help would be great.
       Thanks,
            Johnee.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / The Pope Family,Hampshire.
« on: Tuesday 21 June 11 20:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My great grandfather was always known to my father as Frederick Pope. When I tried to find out more it emerged that he was also known as Henry. Now,all I know about Henry/Frederick is that he was born in 1858 in Hampshire.
I do have two family stories that state that his mother was a Miss Pope and that she married a Mr Smith, they had a family, then divorced and that she and the children took the Pope surname.
Also, a number of Popes were lost in a boating accident off the coast at Christchurch and that they were linked to our family.
I'm sorry that the details are so sketchy but this is all that I know.
   Thankyou,
        Johnee
