Cumberland / Wills for Whitehaven Folk available in Lancashire Archives
« on: Monday 03 August 20 13:58 BST (UK)  »
In the past I have paid Lancashire Archives to send me a copy of early wills for my Whitehaven ancestors but I'm pretty sure that I ended up finding them for free in the end - but I can't remember where! Does anyone have an idea?

Whitehaven is in the Deanery of Copeland.

As an example, I am looking for the will of Kitty Pinder, who died on 6 Dec 1842 and whose will appears to have been proved on 22 Feb 1843.

Thanks for any tips.

Or is this information not available?

Thanks for your help.

« on: Monday 27 January 20 14:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone access the full wedding certificate of John Nicholson son of Thomas Nicholson and Ann Davison daughter of William Davison? Married 10 Jan 1846. I've had a look in all the normal places online, haven't found the BTs for marriages on familysearch.org, only the baptisms and burials for All Saints..

Thanks for your help!

The Common Room / Have I waited the longest for my 1.50 wills??
« on: Tuesday 08 October 19 13:48 BST (UK)  »
So, applied for my probate documents on 29 July at the grand charge of one pound 50 each.. and I am STILL waiting! Other documents, ordered in the middle of September have arrived.

Probate service now ignoring my requests for an update on what has happened to my July order though they claim to respond within 2 days.

I think it's outrageous that customers are not treated on a first come first served basis.

Has anyone else waited this long? 10 WEEKS +!!??

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA Painter - Worthwhile?
« on: Friday 23 August 19 17:29 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking at the DNA Painter website. Basically, I understand you work out and "paint" segments of your chromosomes according to which ancestor they originate from, then other people with the same chromosomes must share the same ancestor as you.

I'm not sure of the value of it if you don't know who the other users of the site are? I can understand comparing and contrasting DNA with a known relative and painting the DNA accordingly, but when you don't know who your match is? What information are you given about the real people behind each match? Can you make contact with them?

Or is the point that your known relatives are tested and upload their results to the site?

Can anyone identify any of these men?

My great-grandfather was William Hunter b November 1870 in Newsham. He then lived in Plessey Road, Blyth from pre-WW1 until his death. He may/may not be in this photo. I can’t recognise him from this photo.

We know he served in the Northumberland Fusiliers because we have his service number: 93716. But we have found absolutely no record of him in the usual online resources at all. He survived the war and brought back a music book which is dated 11 November 1919. It’s also inscribed "British Army on the Rhine".

Can anyone find any information on my great grandfather or any of the men in the photo? Are there any clues in the photo?

The original frame was edged in black so one of the men will have died in combat.

Many thanks for your help!

Roxburghshire / Adam HENDERSON of Jedburgh and the STAMP family
« on: Tuesday 06 November 18 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to locate the ancestors of my great x 4 grandmother Elizabeth Stamp nee Henderson born c 1768 in Scotland and died in 1851 in Sharperton, Northumberland.

Elizabeth Henderson married Thomas Stamp in Alwinton, Northumberland in 1805. They were both described as resident in "Kidland Lordship extraparochial" a couple of miles from Alwinton. 3 of their children were baptised in Alwinton between 1808 and 1812. Thomas Stamp is described as a shoemaker from the local area and Elizabeth, native of Jedburgh, is the daughter of Adam Henderson also native of Jedburgh. A 4th child, Adam, does not appear to have been baptised.

Presuming Elizabeth was born in Jedburgh, I have not found a baptism for her there. There are actually relatively few Hendersons registered in that parish. A possible baptism for Elizabeth's father Adam Henderson is in 16 Apr 1732. "Thomas Henderson Deacon of Threshers in Jed had a child baptized: Adam. Wits: George Bulberwall present deacon of * shoemaker & James Davidson shoemaker both in Jed "

What is the significance of a "deacon" in this context?

Elizabeth's husband Thomas Stamp was a shoemaker whose death was recorded in the Newcastle Journal in 1840. Elizabeth is registered as "Ind" and "annuitant" in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, is named on the "Tithe Apportionments" for Sharperton c 1836 and leaves a will confirming known family relationships as well as effects to a value of under 200 pounds.

The Stamp family were catholic. Their details are listed in C of E documents as papists/dissenters  and they worshipped and registered births and deaths at Biddlestone (catholic) Chapel. I don't know if the Hendersons were also catholic.

Any tips or pointers to resources are very welcome. I have looked at ScotlandsPeople but the website does not appear to work very well and I have given up in frustration. The site keeps asking me to log in and loses my searches in the interim.

Thanks for reading!

Northumberland / Woodhorn Archives & Indexing on familysearch.org
« on: Friday 25 August 17 11:30 BST (UK)  »
I've just noticed that Woodhorn Archives has made available parish records to familysearch for indexing.

https://www.familysearch.org/indexing/projects/UK-England-NorthumberlandParish-Registers-17542012-Part-C?type=IDX#!/

Does anyone know if all or (which) part of the parish records at Woodhorn will be indexed?

If anyone is interested in helping with the project I have to say it seems very well managed. You generally only have to index small batches of records at a time (eg. 2 pages of modern baptisms = 16 entries) so you're never committed to much work at any one time.

Tyrone / Baptism John Dobbins Born c 1760 or 1764 in Moy, County Tyrone
« on: Saturday 25 February 17 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found out an approximate birthdate and place of my long lost Great x 4 grandfather, who spent 22 years in the 30th Regiment of Foot in the British Army and married and lived out the rest of his life in Whitehaven, Cumberland. On enlistment and for part of his time in Whitehaven, he calls himself a "Weaver". He could also sign his name. This is all I know of him.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where he may have been baptised in Moy? Are there records of any other Dobbins family members in Moy?

What was the economic situation in Moy in 1780, when he enlists in the British Army? What might have motivated his departure at c 16 years old?

Any tips and thoughts welcome!

Thank you.
