New Zealand Completed Requests / William (McQuire) Martin
« on: Thursday 17 September 09 16:18 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any details about the forward family of William Martin. He was born William McQuire on 26th July 1857 at Ennerdale, Cumberland and went to NZ in the 1870's where he changed his name to Wm Martin. Involved in the early days of Post & Telegraph he received an honours medal for his work. He went back to visit his parents in 1890 and married Annie Fleet. They had 8 children. one of his sons - Ernest was KIA in WW1 the CWGC lists his parents as living in Morningside, Auckland. The youngest son of William & Annie, Leonard, I think also had a key job with the Post & Telegraph. I also have a copy photo showing William with his parents and some siblings and then I have a Candidate's 'flyer' for the Manukau city council elections - Papatoetoe Ward in the name of Phil & Helen Greenbank. I don't know the date of this flyer or what connection he has to William. I have a fair bit of info on the McQuires in UK but nothing forward of 1890'ish

Any help would be appreciated

Cavan / Charters/Chartus
« on: Monday 01 June 09 07:38 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down my great grand parents. John Charters and his wife Annie Fenner. I have both of their death certificates, they having died in Belfast but family folklore has them coming from Co Cavan. I can't find any reference to their births.

John Charters was supposed to have served 19 years in the army and fought the 'Fuzzy Wuzzys' and although I can find no record of his military service, other stories lead me to believe that bagpipes featured highly in his memories.

I have now found a reference to a John CHARTUS of full age, living at Barrack Hill, a Pensioner (military?) and a Methodist getting married to Anne Fenner of full age of Barrack Hill , a Methodist, on 7th April 1887. This obviously seems to be the correct reference.

Is there anyone out there who can help me by finding any reference to births or other family of these elusive ancestors of mine. At the moment they unbalance the family tree.

From the death certs if believe John to have been born about 1853 and Anne  about 1864.
Thanks
Bob

The Common Room / What job did he do??
« on: Saturday 01 December 07 12:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor, Michael Sloan, born in Ireland who is listed on a marriage certificate in 1862 (in Ireland) as being a Carpenter.  I have located someone who fits a lot of the detail including wife's first name and place of birth, living in Yorkshire in the 1861 census. his employment is listed a being a Sawyer.
Could the 2 trades be compatible

Armed Forces / Suffolk Militia

Hi there, I am trying totrack down arthur Barham. I have his enlistment papers showing that he enlisted into the 83rd Regt on 13th November 1868. His apparent age was said to be 20.. I have sufficient details of Arthur's military service and after, but I am unable to find out anything about him before  that date. He states that he was born in the parish of Higham near Bury St Edmonds, so I assume that he he would have been born about 1848. Previous to his ennlistment he was released from the Suffolk Militia.
Can anyone assist me in this search? I have also posted this on the Suffolk board. But I am interested in the Militia service as well

Thanks
Bob

Armed Forces / Charters

Hi, I need some help and I think that this may be one of my last chances. My Great Granddad was a John Charters who died in Belfast in 1927 age 74. Family history remembers him as having served in the army for around 19 years and having fought the 'Fuzzy Wuzzies'. I have no idea as to his regiment but the family memory has him being nostalgic about the bagpipes. I would think either Scottish or Irish as one of his sons joined the Irish Fusiliers and the other the Seaforth Highlanders during WW1. I would imagine that he served somewhere between 1870 - 1890. could someone do a lookup of medal rolls for campaigns between those dates that might feature him. The photo is of John
Thanks
