WW1 In Memoriam / Private David Dickson Killed in action age about 16.
« on: Thursday 14 August 14 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I was reading an article in last weeks Sun Newspaper. It had a picture of Barbara Dickson the singer, she was holding a photograph of her cousin David Dickson. David had gave a false age when he had enlisted in the 1st war, and he was killed in action aged just 16 or 17. I emailed Barbara because I had the exact same photograph, and wondered if were  perhaps related in any way. I am not to great with computers, and wonder if perhaps anyone can tell me anything more about David. Thanks for your help.

Argyllshire / The Campbell Graveyard in Glendaruel.
« on: Monday 10 February 14 17:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, i am a Campbell. My aunt used to stay on the shorefront at Glendaruel...I remember many years ago as a young boy finding an old graveyard with a dry stone dyke not far from her house, it was surrounded by trees if i remember right. It was a Campbell graveyard with very old headstones. I wonder if anyone can tell me how it came to be in Glendaruel. It was very overgrown with weeds and wonder if anyone tends to it?. I also remember finding an inscription carved into a rock face with words similar to " Here lies the grave of ? a norse chieftain who fell in the battle of ? "...This was on the shorefront leading towards the old pier. Someone told me the rockface had been blasted away to make a new road, but the inscription is still their. Just curious if anyone knows any thing about this.

Orkney / Buckham H Hossack Born Orkney Married 27/7/1875 Edinburgh to Sibla Monteith
« on: Monday 03 February 14 13:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello i recently bough a Communion Table from a very old church in Fife, near Torryburn, Scotland. There was a brass plaque stating that in had been give in memory of Sibla Hossack. I wanted to see in any relatives wanted it back... So far, thanks to a Roots member this is what i have found out. Seemingly she was born in Calcutta in 1854, and married Buckham H. Hossack from Orkney in Edinburgh in July 1875.  Her maiden name was Monteith and her father was Duncan Monteith, Mother Sibla Mcarthur. She boarded for a while in 1871 in Brighton Sussex, i have been told she had some siblings also born in Calcutta...Wonder if anyone up in Orkney can help with the name Hossack, i believe he was 19 years younger than Sibla. Am pretty new to this Site and still trying to work things out!,,maybe someone can tell me also how to reply to people through personal messaging!..Many thanks...I Think the person who donated the Table may have been a minister, i will check and post his name shortly.

Hello i have a very old hand written ledger entitled Stirling District Lunacy Board MINUTE BOOK OF VISITING COMMITTEE...( IN LARBERT STIRLINGSHIRE SCOTLAND) .its starts march 1890, and runs to June 1907. It details everything that was discussed about the asylum, this book has only ever been read by a select few, it makes fasinating reading. The asylum has just been recognised by UNESCO as being of outstanding historical importance. Perhaps if you have a question about the asylum, i may be able to help. Thanks.

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Stirling District Register of Lunatics 1860
« on: Saturday 03 September 11 11:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello. I have 2 very old ledgers from the old Lunatic ward in Stirling. They are both hand written,,The first one is Stirling District Board of Control. Register of Lunatics in Lunatic Wards of Poorhouses. It gives names, male and female, date of admission, parish of residence, rate of maintenance, date of discharge or death, and general remarks. Starting from about 1860. The second ledger,.Stirling District Lunacy Board, Minute Book of Visiting Commitee, again done in hand, starting March 1890-1907,contains hundereds of pages, discussing everything regarding the running of the hospital. This book was kept under lock and key, and most likely will be the earliest records, you will ever find about this Old hospital. Anyway, they are for sale, ot if you are searching, i would be glad to help if i can. The price for the two items is £750. Thanks.
