I would very grateful for some information on the ancestors of Alice Burgess Brown, who was born in Fatfield, County Durham, 1908, to Isabella (b. Humphrey), and William Brown. All possibly from the same area.

This is all I know about them:

Alice married Charles Tomkins of Lubenham, Leics, in 1937.
William Brown died age 29.
Isabella then married a Mr Dodds.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Lubenham families. Harris and Tomkins
« on: Wednesday 21 January 15 19:32 GMT (UK)  »

My grandmother, Elizabeth Soanes, widow, married Charles T. Tomkins around 1907. I was told they were related and would like to trace their ancestors to see if this was right. The marriage took place in Lubenham, Leics. Her maiden name was Harris and she was the daughter of Samuel and Rachael Harris.

Thanks for any help.

Australia / Arrival of Immigrants in 1874

When immigrants arrived in Brisbane in 1874 how were they placed in a home and a job? Was there something equivalent to Ellis Island in the USA?

Australia / What happened to new arrivals in Brisbane in 1874?
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 15:24 GMT (UK)  »

In one of the family bibles I read the following inscription - "John Faulkner Day, left home for Queensland, Sep. 7th, 1874".
Home was Welford, Northants and my researching showed that he travelled from London as an assisted passenger with his newly wedded wife, Selina Catherine, on the Indus. There is an interesting article in a Brisbane newspaper about the arrival on December 26th, after three months voyage.
I found the list of passengers but what I would really love to find are details of what happened to passengers when they arrived. Were they distributed according to their professions, or were they given land? Are there any records that would provide this information?

Suffolk / PLANT of Suffolk. Originally Plantagenet, by any chance?
« on: Tuesday 23 March 10 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
My gggrandmother was  Jemima Plant of Felixstowe, Suffolk. Does anyone think this surname could have been an abbreviation of Plantagenet?
