Somerset / Who was Mr Fudge?
« on: Thursday 01 April 21 18:23 BST (UK)  »
My 3x Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Simpson Amos was baptised on 20 March 1801 at Kingston St Mary at the age of 12, the daughter of William and Mary. Nothing too exceptional about that, except that the incumbent has written "This child was one of Mr Fudge's scholars and was baptised by the desire of her relatives who were of another persuation [sic]".

I can only assume that Mr Fudge was some sort of non-denominational clergyman. If Elizabeth's parents had died (I don't know if they had) and Elizabeth was now being brought up by relatives who were staunch C of E, they may have been the ones wanting Elizabeth baptised into their branch of the religion.

My question is, who was Mr Fudge? Does anyone have any information about him and his 'school'?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Anyone able to make out this surname?
« on: Sunday 09 November 14 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
I've spent ages trying to make out the surname of the burial of Thomas, son of Roger, that took place on 2 October 1682 at St Mary Lambeth. The entry in the register is attached.

I'm certainly no handwriting expert but have looked at several text books and can't find a good match for the initial letter, nor does the letter appear anywhere else in the register that I can see. All the other initial letters are 'modern' and easily readable. Ancestry reckon the name is Godly but there are other Gs that look nothing like it.

Can someone with far more knowledge than me make it out?

Thanks

Armed Forces / Badge identification help needed
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 14:31 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help to identify what this badge represents. It is a figure 1 over a capital letter C and in brass with the usual loops on the back for a pin to go through. It has been found with other military insignia kept by a deceased relative. He served in the Pay Corps in WW2 and there are his cap badge etc. in the tin as well as badges from the Queens Regiment.

This particular badge could belong to either regiment or neither, but it must have had some significance to the ex-soldier. Any ideas?

Armed Forces / Any idea what these medals are?
« on: Saturday 15 December 12 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
This a very long shot but I'm wondering whether anyone can identify one or more of the medals shown here.

William Badger was born in 1873 in Chelsea and at some point he was obviously employed in the Royal Household. This photo appears to have been taken early in the 20th century and shows him in front of one of the State Landaus, resplendent in his full uniform of, presumably, a coachman or similar.

He is wearing four medals that unfortunately aren't very clear, but at least three seem to be military medals as they have clasps on the ribbons. It's possible that some might be Boer War medals, in view of the number of clasps, but I don't know enough about such things to be able to identify them.

I'm hopeful that someone here might be sufficiently knowledgeable about such things to be able to take a guess at what they are from the rather grainy image.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Any idea where this is in Yorkshire?
« on: Friday 13 July 12 16:20 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to decipher the birth place of Isaac Noakes in the 1851 census. An extract of the page is below.

He is living in Sussex but his place of birth is clearly Yorkshire but I can't make out the location. Ancestry thinks it's Grovebury but it doesn't look like that to me and I can't find such a place.

The census reference is HO107/1634 folio 425 page 26 if anyone wants to see the original.

Any ideas? I don't even know which Riding it's in and have chosen to post the query here to start with, but I will cross post this to the other two Yorkshire Ridings boards if no one here recognises it.

Many thanks for any help in advance.

Shropshire / Place name in census
« on: Monday 02 January 12 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
I can't make out the birthplace of Elizabeth Garmstone on the 1851 census for Kidderminster. It's clearly Salop but the town/village is hard to make out. An extract is attached.

I can't find anywhere that would seem to fit but it might be a small settlement that doesn't appear on most maps. I'm not local to the area so I wondered if anyone who knows the county could decipher what it says.

If it helps to view the original the page can be found at HO107/2038 folio 211 page 34.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Canada Lookup Request / John T GARMSTONE b c1836 Kingston, Ontario
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to help a friend to trace her great grandfather John T Garmstone who, according to the censuses when he was in England, was born about 1836 in Kingston, Ontario. His parents probably married in England and then emigrated as I can't find a Garmstone marriage either. John had certainly left Canada by 1861 as he was back in England by then.

I've run into a brick wall now as his birth was before civil registration and the parish registers for Kingston do not appear to have been transcribed and available on line.

It's all rather far from me here in the UK and I'm just wondering if someone has ready access to the Kingston registers and could then let me know what they say about John.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
