Hello,
I have a postcard with an address clearly written on it in pencil, but on careful inspection, I can see extremely faint writing, that appears light brown in places, but so faint as to be invisible unless you angle the card into the light.  I believe this postcard was given to my mother by her putative father, and was probably stored with other letters etc by her mother until her death in 1976.  So I was wondering if there was any technique to determining what the hidden writing is.   Other than the address mentioned, the postcard appears to be unused.
Best wishes,
Paul.

World War One / Confirming owner of Silver War Badge RN3246.
« on: Sunday 13 June 21 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Apologies to those readers who saw my last incorrect message.

I have in my possession a Silver War Badge with the number RN3246, which I thought belonged to my grandad William Kelly.  Checking Ancestry records, I see it comes up with a Phillips F?  O.N. J.46794  Rating Ord. Sea., issued 3rd November 1916.  I have no idea who this person is, or why we have it in our possession.  Can someone confirm I am on the right track so I don't go wasting my time seaching for this man?
Thanks, Paul.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Trying to find my Mum's unknown Father.
« on: Monday 29 March 21 22:18 BST (UK)  »
I’ve been trying for many years to find out who my mother’s father was, as she was born technically illegitimate.  All we might know has been kept secret, other than my Mum thinks his name was “Mack”.  Mum did a FTDNA Family Finder test some years ago before she died.  I have myself done the same test, as well as a FTDNA Y-DNA test.  Recently I did an Ancestry DNA test.  The latter helped me discover a second cousin in Australia that I didn’t know existed.  Sadly, regards Mum’s Father’s side, I’ve hit a huge brick wall.

I thought I knew who Mum’s Putative Father was.  Based on circumstantial evidence, I was sure that he was a Beaumont, especially as this man may have fathered two others out of wedlock before he eventually married.  Now I’m unsure, as no matches on either test has shown a link to any Beaumont.

I have narrowed my Ancestry matches down to a few dozen of about 450 that are probably linked to Mum’s Father’s side.  But I don’t recognise any surnames on their trees (some don’t even have any tree) as I don’t know his name.  Most of these matches are 5th-6th cousins, with one that is a possible 3rd-4th cousin who has not responded to my email.

Obviously the biggest hurdle is in finding his name.  It looks like I may have to wait until a closer possible relation does an Ancestry DNA test, which may then reveal something.  What I have noticed is that of those matches mentioned above, they seem to have a US connection, but that might just be more Americans than British doing these tests.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Jane MEALOR died 1955 Leeds.
« on: Sunday 14 October 18 16:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am interested in this lady, whom I believe may be my Grandfather's sister Jane Kelly.  I have gained the following info:

1955 FreeBMD D Search: JFM 1955 Leeds 2c 540 Jane Mealor aged 62/1893.

1955 Leeds General Cemetery Burial Register MS 421/3/1/25: No.6816:
New Grave 4106 D 8 Feb 1955 Buried 12 Feb Jane Mealor aged 62/1893 of 20 Stocks Hill Leeds 12.

Other than obviously buying the death certificate, which I don't think will help me much, are there any Street Directories which might glean some more info.  I already know a fair bit about her three marriages and one child.  But I've no idea why she would be in Leeds.  She was previously a Housekeeper, so maybe she was doing that in Leeds.  Her third husband died in 1946 Rock Ferry near Birkenhead, Cheshire.  Also I've no idea if there is a gravestone.

Best wishes,
Paul.

Hello,

I wonder if some kind soul would help me find the above address and it's occupants on your 1910 Census.  I assume it's in Campbell County.  I've spent many hours looking at the Newport Townships but I've been unable to locate the street.  The other problem, is that on Google Maps, I can see two streets with this name --- one in Licking, the other to the east of it and more likely in central Newport.

Best wishes,
Paul.

Dublin / Johannes [John] McKenzie & Maria [Mary] Lawler 1878 Dublin Marriage
« on: Wednesday 14 March 18 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I've downloaded a pdf of the above Roman Catholic Marriage record from the Church Records on irishgenealogy.ie -- but the copy is quite poor and out of focus.  I know it lists both their parents and I can see a mention of Liverpool on John's line.  Their marriage is entry number 845.  Does anyone know where I can download a better, more readable copy??  I have also downloaded their Civil Marriage record from the same site, and can read that ok.

Shropshire / Hollyhurst Cottages, Hollyhurst Road near Marbury.
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find the above address on the 1939 Register, but though it comes up with something, I think it's another Hollyhurst...  In fact I cannot find anything on this Hollyhurst Road.  I've also looked on the 1911/1901 Census with no joy.   These houses are located near to the Combermere Memorial/Monument.

Thanks in advance.
Paul.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / John William HOTCHON
« on: Thursday 23 November 17 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am interested in John William HOTCHON who on the FindMyPast 1910 Electoral Register was living at 9 Annies Grove, Scarborough Street, South Newington, Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

I have already checked the 1911 Census (Selina Hubert/Huberth and Whitfield children from her first marriage) and the 1901 Census (9 Annies Terrace, Hardcastle family), but I've not been able to link him to either family.

I am specifically interested in the HOTCHON surname, in order to locate a William HOTCHON, a mariner, but I have no other info about him.

Best wishes,
Paul.

Down / Belfast City Cemetery Records -- possible error??
« on: Wednesday 21 September 16 10:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

At Belfast City Cemetery Section P2 Grave 628, therein lies a James Frederick Vennard who died in 1908 aged 6.  This person lived at 9 Agra Street.  Within this grave lies some of my Henry ancestors, and I know that in about 1906-7 Samuel Henry & family lived at 5 Agra Street.  But I'm not aware of any Vennard's in my Henry family tree, so was wondering if this Vennard grave entry might be an error in the records??  The link is here:

https://ssl.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialsearch/BurialSearch.aspx?GraveSection=P2&GraveNumber=628&CemeteryName=City%20Cemetery

Would Samuel have let a neighbour bury his son in the Henry family grave??

Best wishes,
Paul.
