Ireland / Lambert lookup request
« on: Tuesday 25 October 16 13:26 BST (UK)  »
I am researching a Patrick Lambert who was born in Ireland around 16 February 1870/71. (I've also seen it as far back as 1866 on one record.) His father's name is James. In 1883 or 84 Patrick immigrated to Pennsylvania. In his death certificate from 1915, it gives his father's name, but not his mother's. It also doesn't give any specific location in Ireland for his birth.
Can someone help me identify the birth location and mother's name for Patrick, please?
Thank you!

Matt

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Kurrent/Czech/Bohemian birth records
« on: Wednesday 18 November 15 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am in need of help deciphering some names from old Bohemian vital records. I know the following:
- Name: Josefa Rychly
- Father: Frantisek Rychly
- Mother: Anna Titl (or Titlova)
- Born: 18 December 1842, Dobriv, Rokycany District

In the baptismal record, is also gives the names of Josefa's grandparents. I'm having a tough time deciphering those names. I also found a couple of siblings, but I'm having just as much trouble reading those clearly enough. Thanks in advance for the help!

Here are the links to use to see the records. Note that you can zoom in and out and move the image about if needed:

Offaly (Kings) / Doolan-Mitchell & Brennan families of Birr
« on: Monday 18 November 13 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am currently researching a couple of families that were living in Parsonstown or Birr. Here is what I currently have:

William Doolan (also spelled Dowling): ma. Sara Mitchell, 22 February 1840
Children: 1. (unknown name), b. 1841; 2. Mary, chr. 8 January 1843; 3. James, b. ca. 1846; 4. Kate, unknown birth; 5. Bridget, unknown birth.

Mary went on to marry John Brennan on 9 February 1867 in Birr. They immigrated to the USA ca. 1885.
I'm first interested in seeing if someone has been able to go back any further with the Doolan-Mitchell line.

My second enquiry deals with the occupation of John Brennan. According to the civil marriage record, John's occupation was that of a baker. He retained that occupation in the USA. His father, Martin, was listed as being a tradesman.
My question is: would John have been apprenticed to become a baker, and, if so, are there documents somewhere to support this? I'm hoping that documentation might help answer questions about his line as well. All I have is his father's name. I believe he was born around 1840-45, but that would be only a guess. I'm not even sure that he was christened in Birr, although he was living there at the time of his marriage.
I do know that some occupations have guilds in England, but I don't have that much experience with occupational traditions in Ireland.

Thank you for your time and help!

Devon / Confused and need help!
« on: Friday 03 May 13 04:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I'll start off by saying that I am not from the UK, so I am not entirely familiar with how to find records for a given location. For instance, I am trying to find a birth/baptismal entry for Fanny Rowland, who was born somewhere in Devon around 1796. The only other bit of vital information I have on her is that she was married to William Hooper in East Stonehouse on 6 January 1815. I only have a transcription of the basic details of the event, meaning that I don't know if it states that she was from that parish or not.
So, thinking that Fanny was from East Stonehouse, I went looking for information about the parish records and got very confused. Some sites, like (http://maps.familysearch.org/)* and (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/parishbooks.htm) state that parish records for this location start at 1813. So, if that's true, then would her baptism have been recorded in nearby Stoke Damerel or Plymouth?
Other sites, such as (http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/EastStonehouse/#ChurchRecords) state that parish records go back to 1697. The site above led me to: (http://www.devon.gov.uk/index/councildemocracy/record_office/information_about_devon_heritage_services/parish_register_list/dpr_p-2.htm), which states that there are four parishes, with St. George being the one with christening records back to 1697.
I guess I just need some guidance with understanding where I need to look for information. Not knowing specifically where Fanny was born does hurt because she may have been born elsewhere in the county. I am just assuming that it was East Stonehouse since that's where they were married. In some countries, marriages took place in the bride's parish, and I've seen examples of that from my research in other counties in England. Whether she was born there or just happened to be living there is another story.
For your information, William and Fanny next lived in the town of Plymouth-Dock, sub-district of Morice in the parish of Stoke Damerel for their children's births as well as the 1841 census. However, they both died prior to the 1851 census, which hurts even more!
I would appreciate any suggestions and any help that might be offered in that matter.
Thank you for your time!

*For this site, it should default to the 1851 UK Jurisdictions Map. All you do is type in the location in the search engine on the left, and click search. A list of possible locations will appear and you select the one that matches the location you're researching.

Hello,
I am in need of a look up for Jane Sarah Twist, who was born around 1867 in Faversham.
The index records state that she was living in Elham in 1891. Then, she married a William Thomas Gigg. Subsequent indexes have her living in Dover for 1901 and 1911. I would like to know the names of her children as well, if applicable.
If it's kosher with the management, please try to include any images of the censuses, or private message me and I will send you my email address.
Thank you!

Nottinghamshire / Thomas Morley and guardianship help
« on: Friday 29 March 13 15:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching an individual by the name of Thomas Morley. He was born in Kimberley on 5 November 1819 and baptized in Greasley on 24 November 1823. His parents were John Morley and Ann Aldridge, who were married in Basford on 10 June 1811 (source: Phillimore's). Thomas is the only child that I know of from this marriage.
My ultimate goal here is to try and find the parentage of John Morley and Ann Aldridge.
According to a biography of Thomas, as told by his son Joshua, Ann died when Thomas was four years old, which would be around 1823. Then, when Thomas was young, his father left him and was never heard from again. However, the biography states that he then lived with his grandmother without mentioning the name.
Is anyone familiar with legal guardianship resources available for Nottinghamshire during this era? I think that if Thomas lived with his grandmother, then she must be mentioned somewhere in some transference of guardianship papers. (Then again, I am not an expert on the logistics of guardianship for England. I am only assuming that there had to have been some sort of legal proceedings to allow her to have guardianship.)
My thinking here is that, if I have access to the name of this grandmother, then I will be able to at least determine one of the parents for either John or Ann.
Another potential resource for information are the poor and working house records. The biography continues to say that Thomas would be so hungry that he would eat the burned potato peelings from the garbage heaps behind houses. So maybe Thomas and the grandmother might have eventually received some parochial assistance. Are there any good and accessible resources for the poor and working house records?
Any help here will be greatly appreciated!

Gloucestershire / Thomas Worley origins help
« on: Thursday 28 March 13 13:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am in need of help for an individual who was from Bristol. The name of the individual I am researching is: Thomas Worley
Here's the information I have on him that might help you:
Thomas was born between 1783 and 1787 in Bristol. I'm not sure in which parish specifically he was born. For some reason, he moved to Devonshire where he married Mary Harris in the parish of Stoke Damerel in 1815. The marriage record states that he was of this parish (meaning Stoke Damerel). His occupation was that of a cordswainer. (I have tried researching if maybe this occupation might be able to provide some insight, but I have yet to find anything useful. I'm not proficient in apprenticeships and the logistics behind that.) Thomas had at least five children, all born in Devon. He died in 1853 and is buried in the parish of Stoke Damerel.
The 1841 census indicates that he was not born in Devon. The 1851 census provides the information that he was from Bristol. I searched the 1841 census for "Worley" in Gloucestershire and no immediate family members could be determined. He was also a part of the only Worley family known to be living in Devon in 1841.
I hope this is enough information to help you get started. I've really hit a brick wall here with this individual and can use all of the help I can get!
Let me know if you have any questions or need anything clarified. Thank you!

Europe / Italian marriage inquiry
« on: Tuesday 11 December 12 02:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching in the Palermo area of Sicily and need some help with finding materials used during the marriage process.
The individuals I am currently researching are named Felice Santangelo and Cristina Becchinella. According to the Marriage Banns, Felice was born in Palermo. However, the names of his parents are not mentioned. In fact, his father is listed as "ignato" or "unknown." The document further explains that he was not adopted. I believe he was an esposto, or an abandoned child, brought up by the church or other entity.
The marriage bann explains that Felice submitted a birth certificate in order to validify the truth prior to his marriage.
I am wondering how I might be able to view this particular document. Would this be a document found in the "allegati"?
The couple's marriage banns, or "Pubblicazioni di Matrimonio" was on 8 December 1880 and the marriage was on 9 January 1881. Would the allegati be in the year 1880 or 1881? The links to those documents are here:
