Aberdeenshire / Kingseat Hospital
« on: Tuesday 08 August 23 17:15 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if an address on a death registration was part of the Kingseat Hospital village. I have a relative who died in 1951 at the infirmary in Aberdeen but her usual address was Moss-side, Parkhills, Dyce. As far as I know she lived in an institution but do not know why. On the 1921 census she is living at home with her parents in Clatt. Her mother dies shortly afterwards and in 1926 her father is advertising for a housekeeper so I think she may have gone to live somewhere in this period. On the death registration the informant is a John McMath who is, what looks like, the occupier.

Cumberland / John Hutchinson baptisms - look up at Cumbria Archives
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the baptism record of John Hutchinson about 1847 son of Richard (basket maker) and Mary Hutchinson. They were a travelling family and there are two possibilities with these parents:
6th January 1847 at Cumwhitton
26th March 1854 at Camerton
John's census records and death certificate give his birth around 1847 but I cannot find a birth registration. Perhaps the Camerton baptism was a second for him as his brother, Richard, was also baptised on that day. Both of the churches are in parishes where they lived.
Would anyone be able to look at these records for me please.

If anyone is going to Manchester Central Library I wonder if they could perhaps see if there is a newspaper report of John's inquest. I have been looking for his death for a number of years and after the death of one of his grand-daughters a family bible had a note of his death and I was finally able to order a death certificate.
The death certificate revealed that he had died as the result of complications caused by an injury to his right hand in an accident on Cleggs Lane, Little Hulton on 30th July 1907. He was taken to Bolton Union Workhouse at Farnworth where he died. He was a labourer and lived in Farnworth (according to death certificate) or Walkden (burial register). An inquest was held 10th August 1907 but no place is given. John was buried at St Paul's, Walkden, on 10th August.
I am hoping that perhaps a newspaper report will give some more family details as I have also been looking for his wife, Ellen, and one of his sons, John, for a long time as well. I have information on his son, Peter, who is my husband's great-grandfather. The only census I have with them all together is 1891 when they were living at 4 Watson St, Farnworth.
Thank you

Dumfriesshire / Holmains, Dalton, Dumfriesshire
« on: Sunday 21 September 14 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me locate Holmains for me. My 3x great-grandfather and his family lived there in the 1870s. He was a ploughman and when one daughter was born their residence was given as Holmains and the same when another daughter died in 1877. I will be visiting the area in November and would like to see it if it still exists.

South Africa / Dunbar/Henderson Family in South Africa - anyone connected?
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 10:43 GMT (UK)  »
My 2x great-grandfather's sister, Barbara Henderson (born 21 May 1865 in Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire), emigrated to South Africa from Scotland in 1914 with her daughters, Catherine Sidney Wasson Dunbar (born 16 May 1895 in Glasgow) and Barbara Robison Henderson Dunbar (born 27 Aug 1899 in Govan, Ayrshire). Her second husband, Jeremiah John Dunbar (born 21 Dec 1872 in Girvan, Ayrshire) seems to have emigrated in 1903 (man with right name, age and profession anyway). He was a carpenter/joiner and I think I have found his death notice in 1958. I have a possible death in 1945 for Barbara from another researcher but no written proof.
In 1929 Barbara's son from her first marriage, Frank Gilligan/Henderson (born 13 Feb 1891 in Glasgow), his wife, Isabella Davidson (born 1893 in Dumfriesshire), and son, Thomas Francis Henderson (born 1915 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire) emigrated to South Africa presumably to join them. Frank used the surname of his mother for most of his life. His father, Francis Gilligan, had died when he was a small child. He was a ploughman so perhaps he went to farm.
Does anyone have any information about what happened to them?
Thank you

Durham Lookup Requests / Durham Record Office look up of Brignall St Mary Parish Records
« on: Wednesday 05 February 14 17:58 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone be able to look up a marriage (6th July 1800) for me please. The marriage is for Thomas Hornsby and Margaret Craggs. Brignall was in North Yorkshire at this point but became part of Durham in 1974 with local government reorganisation. I have looked on the Record Office site and the details for the register are:
May-1762   Nov-1815   IGI (pt)/572   Original ref - EP/Bri 1/6     Microfilm - M42/890
I have found the marriage on family search and also a reference in Boyd's marriage index for a reading on banns in Easington, Co Durham.
Thank you
Pauline
