The Common Room / Holly and Ivy in 1911
« on: Tuesday 14 May 24 17:04 BST (UK)  »
James HIRST born Dinnington, YKS 1876 (45 years 5mos), Alice born Cannock Staffs 1870 (50 years 11 mos), Ivy born Worksop, Notts 1906 (15 years 4mos) and Holly born Todwick, YKS 1908 (13 years 0mos) are at Fisher Street in Retford Notts in 1921 but I can't currently find them in 1911 to see how long James and Alice claim to be married.

I have a possible Alice - Alice PASS marrying James Hirst 2Q 1904 Huddersfield - but can't currently locate Ivy and Holly's births to see the mother's maiden name.

HIRST could be HURST.

Holly marries Tom Waplington/Wapplington East Retford RD 1927 and dies Worksop 1964, Tom dies 1986 Worksop RD.

Please can anyone find the family in 1911? Thanks

A John Vernon married Alice Gill Rotherham RD Jun Q 1909

Dec Q 1909 Rotherham RD the birth of a son Gilbert is registered.

1911 census John, Alice and Gilbert are at Chatsworth Road Rotherham - John, yob 1887, is a coal miner, born Rotherham while Alice (1884) and Gilbert (1910) are shown born Raworth.

3Q 1919 an Alice VERNON marries Henry J Cole Rotherham RD

1921 what appears to be this Alice, now Mrs Cole, is at 29 Castle Avenue Rotherham but her pob is now Parkgate, YKS, with son Gilbert, pob Ryecroft, YKS shown as Henry's step-son, and Henry Cole born Corsham Wilts an out of work steel worker.

1939 Alice and Henry are at 5 Castle Avenue Rotherham.

So what happened to her first husband John Vernon to enable her to marry Mr Cole?

https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/412310/john-vernon/ shows a Private John Vernon service no 111499 of the Canadian Mounted Rifles B Coy 6th Regt died 10th October 1915 aged 29 and commemorated at Rotherham Moorgate cemy.

There is the info that he was the "Husband of Alice Cole (formerly Vernon), of 29, Castle Avenue, Rotherham."

Searching newspapers Kentish Express and Ashford Observer of 16th October 1915 it seems that John Vernon was staying overnight at a hotel in Ashford, he was stationed at Caesar's Camp, Shorncliffe, and fell from an upper window and died of his injuries.

He was a shoemaker's machinist and belonged to Rotherham, YKS and had "joined at St John's NB". "He was married and his wife and child have come to England from Canada."

The South Eastern Gazette of 19th October tells us that he "went out to St John's about eight years ago" which doesn't make sense if he was in Rotherham in 1909 to marry and for the 1911 census.

Searching Library and Archives Canada his enlistment form is available and this shows he has previously serviced with "something dragoons"

Does anyone have any idea what Dragoons this might have been?

We can't currently find any records relating to journeys between England and Canada.

I'd welcome another pair of eyes looking at this as I'm wondering if we have the wrong Alice Gill or wrong John Vernon. Thanks

(Tried to attach the Dragoons bit but it failed, will try again later)

The Common Room / Professional nurse 1911
« on: Sunday 07 April 24 14:03 BST (UK)  »
Looking for something completely different on the 1911 Census I came across this interesting occupation for Ethel Helmore.

She's at the home of Marion Stirling Stuart, a substantial house known as St Margaret's in Tickford Street in Newport Pagnell:

Marion Stirling   Stuart   Head   Single   Female   49   1862   -   Lanarshire N B
Alice   Brown   Boarder   Single   Female   30   1881   -   Folkestone
Emily   Bolton   Servant   Widow   Female   42   1869   Cook domestic   Shritham
Emma   Steers   Servant   Single   Female   46   1865   Tablemaid domestic   Rotherhithe
Mary Jane   Agar   Servant   Single   Female   47   1864   Ladiesmaid domestic   Denby Yorkshire
Ruth   Gratham   Servant   Single   Female   33   1878   Housemaid domestic   Sussex Farm Ripley
Mary   Hogg   Servant   -   Female   15   1896   Training girl   Windsor
Ethel   Helmore   Servant   Single   Female   43   1868   Professonal nurse   Wimbledon

My immediate reaction was to think about how nurses could be unprofessional :)

I'm assuming that Ms Stirling Stuart was ill and needed a live in nurse although she is still at St Margaret's in 1921 as is Alice Brown - Alice is shown as 40 while Marion is now 37. Emma Steers the servant is still in the household but there is no cook.

Ms Stirling Stuart dies in March 1953, North Bucks RD which would cover Newport Pagnell, leaving over £11K. I think I might just get a copy of her will as I'm now intrigued by her and her household.

Photograph Resources, Tips, Tutorials / Travelling photographers
« on: Thursday 04 April 24 10:06 BST (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but a new, free,  collection of information about Travelling Photographers has recently been made available on the RTFHS website:

https://rtfhs.org.uk/directory-of-travelling-photographers-1841-1881/

It just might include the name of a photographer of interest when trying to date old photos.

Hope this is of use to some.

Travelling People / Travelling Photographers and other new free records
« on: Thursday 04 April 24 10:01 BST (UK)  »
The Romany and Traveller FHS have recently added two new collections to their free records: https://rtfhs.org.uk/free-records/

Part 1 of the Directory of Travelling Photographers collated by Chy Hersey: https://rtfhs.org.uk/directory-of-travelling-photographers-1841-1881/

and The Keith Chandler Collection of Romany and Traveller Biographies.

Keith started out collecting information about Romany musicians but the database grew to include  other Travelling people he came across. The result is a Collection of thousands of individuals that Keith has kindly donated to the RTFHS for everyone to gain from.

Surnames A to B launched on 2 April 2024 and will be joined by other letters of the alphabet over the coming weeks and months: https://rtfhs.org.uk/the-keith-chandler-collection-of-romany-and-traveller-biographies/

Do also look at the other free records such as The Ian Orchard West Country Collection while you browse the site and pop back every so often to see what else had been added.

The Common Room / How to get a copy of a page from an English newspaper from 1974
« on: Monday 01 April 24 11:46 BST (UK)  »
My local library has the paper but the way it has been bound means that a photocopy of the page - it's a report of a wedding - doesn't come out very well, the photograph particularly.

So I tried the BNA and they have the paper online for some but not all of the 1970s - 1974 being a year that is missing.

If I know what page of which edition does anyone know if there is a way I can order - happy to pay a fee - a good copy of the page from the BNA? I assume they must have it even though it's not yet in the digitised collection.

It's the couple's golden wedding in a few months which is why I'm after the newspaper report.

Thanks for any help.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 annotation query
« on: Thursday 07 March 24 08:54 GMT (UK)  »
1939 Thomas and Dorothy Hillyer plus children are at Hylside Bungalow, Hockliffe.

Dorothy is written as Hillyer and then someone has added Hullyer above her name and there is a code on the right hand page.

Please can anyone work out why Hullyer has been added?

If it helps Thomas G Hillyer and Dorothy A Stones appear to marry Dec Q 1924 and so far I have three probable, and potentially a fourth, children for them one of whom I believe to be alive and who would account for one of the two hidden entries at the bottom of their entry.

Thanks
