Nottinghamshire / Sutton In Ashfield Old Model Prize Band.
« on: Friday 05 February 21 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.

My ancestor, Redfern Scott, (1842) was a conductor for this brass band for a long while in the late 1800s, he was also a school caretaker (would love to know which school)

I've  been able to find him mentioned in loads  of newspaper articles,  but I was hoping to find a photo of the brass band.  I've googled but I'm not sure where else to try.  Can anyone suggest where I might be able to contact or query?

His brother was also a local musician, Charles Scott.

Ireland / Driscoll Brick Wall
« on: Tuesday 09 July 19 11:17 BST (UK)  »
I have asked on a few groups I am in, but to no avail.  Parts of it have been discussed on rootschat also, but I don't seem any closer to knocking down my brick wall.

For reference, a previous Rootschat query

So, further to the information stated in the above link.

Margaret Johnston was most likely born in 1841, not 1832 as originally thought.  There is a margaret Johnston born in Limerick, to a John Johnston, shoe maker and an Eliza Blackwell.

Timothy year of birth (1823??) still unknown and place of birth unknown.  He was '59' when his death was registered in 1882, but i have three relatives who have aged by ten years when they were registered dead so i'm not sure how correct his age was.

I thought I would trace my great granddads siblings...

Daniel born 1867, in Cashel Tipperary.  I thought originally he had died as a death registration for a one year old Daniel Driscoll in Kildare exsists, and by this time they may have moved to Kildare (based on Catharine Driscoll being born in Kildare 1869).  But given that the short service record states my great grandads next of kin was brother Daniel Driscoll, and a potentional school record (will try to find and link that also ) also states a brother Daniel... I'm undecided.  I've searched for possible marriages and travel documents, but to no avail.

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=IRE%2FIRESCHOOLS%2F007634794%2F00529&parentid=IRE%2FNATIONAL%2FSCHOOL%2FREGISTER%2F107109

Catharine Driscoll born 1869, Kildare... Cant find a death for her as a child, and a marriage would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack, seeing as the family seem to move about so much I honestly don't know where to look.

Dinah Driscoll - This one, I thought, would be on the money.  A search for Dinah Driscoll on irishgenealogy shows two born - One in Skibberean in 1869 and my lass here born in 1972 in Kildare.

But then another another brick wall.  A death for a Dianna Driscoll in Dublin in 1891, aged 20, from Skibberean - so most likely the Dinah born in 1869 - but the age fits more with 1872.

Then I found a death record in 1905 for a Matilda Lawson in Brooklyn New York - parents were Dinah Driscoll from Ireland and Louis Lawson from Sweden.  Matilda is aged 0 when buried in a cemetery that no longer exsists .
 (Link didn;t work?

Now, I can't find a birth for Matilda, a marriage for Dinah and Louis, a travel document for either of them or a mention of them on the census for new york 1900 or 1910.

Margaret Driscoll born 1877 - died in 1878, this is in Celbridge where the family seem to end up.

I honestly just do not know what to do now.  I have tried all avenues - I can't find a death for Margaret Johnston (Driscoll) after 1883 when she is in prison, this is the last I find of her.  I have searched irishgenealogy, rootsireland, findmypast, ancestry and familysearch, for all combinations of names and ages and locations.

DNA - I match a few 'Driscolls' but a few seem to link, I match a handful of people who are descended from Florance Driscoll  (male) who was born in 1821, and eventually moved to Kent, England.  It seems no one has found Florance parents - but given the age I have considered he may be a possible sibling to my ancestor Timothy Driscoll.  So I've looked for a Timothy Driscoll and a Florance Driscoll - both with Timothy Driscoll as a father, but this hasn't given me any answers either.

Should I just admit defeat now?  I know The Driscolls originate from Cork, and I have looked there - But there are SO MANY.

I am so sorry that I have rambled on.

Dublin / Garrigan of Swords
« on: Monday 20 November 17 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Can I get some ideas/help with this please?

Anne Henvey (my dad knew her as Nanny Garrigan). She is buried with husband, Patrick Garrigan, in Swords, Dublin. They have one son, in 1928, Matthew Garrigan. My dad does not remember him. My dad DOES remember another son, 'Jimmy' James Garrigan, he was in a wheelchair. He too is buried with Annne and Patrick, he died in the 80s.

I am stuck.... I cannot find a marriage for them, nor can I find the birth of James. Not sure what happened with Matthew either!

Now, by Patricks age at death he was born in 1889. So in 1911, he would be 22.

There is a Patrick Garigan, living in Swords, married for 4 years with 2 children. This I believe is the Patrick that married Anne, but this must be a first marriage. Anne appears else where in 1911 ,transcribed as Anne Henry and a domestic servant I believe.

Now I'm stuck again... I can't find the registration of the 2 children listed. I can't find a record of Patrick Garrigan/Garigan/Gargan marrying a Mary around 1907!

Garigan Patrick 22 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic
Garigan Mary 22 Female Wife Roman Catholic
Garigan John 2 Male Son Roman Catholic
Garigan Margat M Female Daughter Roman Catholic

Further to this, I have a newspaper article listing for Patrick Garrigan having his bike stolen in Priorswood in Swords and there is also, around 1919, a county court session where Patrick is fined because of son John stealing.

Can anyone help?

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Family mssing from 1861 census
« on: Monday 22 May 17 11:21 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor (and family) totally missing from the 1861, what would be the reason for this?

Joseph SMITH (I know, I know...) born in 1803, Tipton.  Wife is Jane, born in 1807, Tipton.
In 1841, 1851 and 1871, they are living at Horton Street, West Bromwich.  In the electoral register for 1861, Joseph Smith is listed at Horton Street.

He was a Boiler Maker in 1851 and 1871.  He died in 1873, the probate states Joseph Smith, of Newtown, West Bromwich and I believe Horton Street was part of Newtown.  Jane also died in 1873.

I have searched all kinds of combinations, I have considered they were visiting someone, but I just cannot locate them.

Dublin / 1901 census help
« on: Monday 03 April 17 09:46 BST (UK)  »
I can't find Richard Gaffney in the Dublin census.  He was born c.1862 (based on wedding) but on his workhouse records his ages fluctuates and at one point it could be 1853.
He was a plasterer and I've found him in and out of the workhouse from 1896 until 1910.

I understand if he were in the work house at the time he would just have his initials, but even then I'm not finding an R G plasterer in Dublin.

I also can't find his death... He married Alice Dunne in 1883, but in 1900 she registers a child under Thomas Sheridan name and in 1901 she is living with him as 'wife' although she doesn't marry him until 1929.
Streets that appear are Hay Market, Bride street, Church Street,Jervis Street and Anguier Street.

Dublin / Driscoll/Sheridan/Gaffney confusion. Help needed.
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 12:29 BST (UK)  »
Brick Wall help needed...

I've got Mary Gertrude Sheridan born 1896 in Dublin. Parents are Thomas Sheridan and Mary O'Driscoll.

Thomas and Mary marry in May 1900, but by June 1900, Thomas is on the register of James Christopher Sheridan, mother Alice Gaffney. In 1901, Thomas Sheridan is living 'married' with Alice Sheridan, Gertrude Sheridan, James Christpher Sheridan, Mary Gaffney (Alice daughter). They are living with Patrick Sheridan (Thomas father).

In 1911, they are together without Patrick Sheridan, this time they have Anne Sheridan (about 7). Mary/Gertrude sheridan is no where and they save 3 children, 2 living. Step daughter Mary Gaffney is still there as is James Christopher. I can't find another child born to them.

Thomas Sheridan and Alice Gaffney don't actually marry until 1929! I've found Alice died in 1950, as a widow. But I can't find any matches to Thomas Dying.

However my interest is in Mary Gertude Sheridan and Mary O'Driscoll.

Alice Gaffney was a widow when she married Thomas. Her maiden name is Dunne. I can only find James Christopher and Anne as her kids to Thomas. So would that mean Mary Gertude had died?

And when did Mary Sheridan nee O'Driscoll die? Could they have waited for her to die before marrying in 1929? Or did she did sooner than that and they waited for Alices first husband to die? They married in 1883, Richard Gaffney and Alice Dunne.

It's very perculiar. Mary O'Driscoll was baptised may 1900, despite being born in 1868, (I think to be baptised into Catholic church) and married that same month, so how come Thomas is then 'fathering' a child a month later with another woman?

Ireland / Driscoll/Johnston of various places help needed.
« on: Wednesday 22 March 17 11:39 GMT (UK)  »
I'm still struggling with a big brick wall in my tree.

My great grandparents married in Lanacshire, England in 1897.  Both were born in Ireland (Mary Salmon born 1873 Dublin and Cornelius Driscoll born in 1874, Kildare).  When they marry, it is in a Catholic church and Cornelius states his father his deceased. (Timothy Driscoll)

In 1898, they aren in Dublin and have baptised first daughter, Mary Ann O'Driscoll.  (She married Richard Maguire).

1901 and 1911, they are living on Main Street, Swords, Dublin.  Cornelius puts his place of birth as Kildare both times.

Baptism record for Cornelius fits in Naas, Kildare, 1874.  Parents Timothy and Margaret nee Johnston.  A few more children are found, Daniel (1867, Tipperary), Catherine (1869 Kildare), Dinah (1872, Kildare), Margaret (1877, Kildare).

Marriage for Timothy Driscoll and Margaret Johnston in 1864, Tipperary, fits with names and first born.  The baptism records I have found are Church of Ireland, as is the marriage record.

Timothy father is Timothy also (a farmer) , and Margaret is John Johnston, a shoe maker.

This is where I am stuck.  I think I have found Cornelius short Service, British army record. On there he states he is a farm labourer (which matches farmer on marriage cert) and that he is church of ireland, born 1873, Kildare. The documents are signed around 13/15 august 1892, In Dublin, but by the 17th August 1892, it says " Discharged in consequence of not being likely to be an efficent soldier"

Next of kin is Daniel Driscoll, brother, of Johns Town, Kings county.

The next thing I found is in 1883, a Cornelius Driscoll, an Orphan, in Kilmeague. The year of birth in 1877, so off by a little bit.  Religion is Church Of Ireland.  Also on this list, is Daniel Driscoll, also an orphan.  Could this be my great grandad?

In 1883, a Margaret Driscoll is sent to Grangegorman prison.  For deserting her 3 children and leaving them to Celbridge union.  This states she was born in Limerick and is 50 years old.  She was given up by John Johnston.  (Father?)

In 1882, I found a death for Timothy Driscoll, in Celbridge, but I have yet to apply for the death certificate (waiting on printer ink so I can send off for a 4 Euro pdf)

Finally, in 1900.  There is a baptism (first name missing) for a ? Driscoll, born in 1868 but baptised in 1900, living in Dublin, parents Timothy Driscoll and Margaret Johnston, both dead.  There is latin on it and I believe somebody roughly translated in via facebook that the baptism was to change religion to catholic.  That same year/month, Mary Driscoll, of the same adress as the baptism, marries Thomas Sheridan.

I know thats a lot of information... But I'm really struggling with a few things... Why can I find no origional baptism for Mary Driscoll, between tipperary/kildare (thats if she is a sister of great grandad).

I'm not sure how to find any more info on Timothy Driscoll, don't know where he was born and as you can see this family seemed to move about a bit... Where else or what else can I try? I have a rough year and place of birth for Margaret Johnston, but even that is proving difficult.

I was hoping to find a news paper article about her deserting the children, but I have searched high and low.  I have a month subscription to rootsireland, I have ancestry and FindMyPast, I've searched familysearch and irishgenealogy but I'm just missing something.

I don't know what happened to any of the kids apart from Cornelius.  (My ancestor). He had 6 children and died 4 years after my dad was born (so obviously dad doesn't remember him).

Worcestershire / Parsons of Netherton/Dudley.
« on: Monday 20 March 17 12:00 GMT (UK)  »
Having a bit of trouble with my 5thx Great grandfather.

Thomas Parsons, born c1790 Dudley, Worcesterhire.  He is on the 1841 and 1851 census with Wife Sophia and few children, youngest being Henry Parsons 1832.

I thought he may have died in 1851, registered march quarter, but obviously this is before the 1851 Census... I don't think he is on the 1861 census though.  They are at Baptist End, Netherton.

My main issue is his marriage... My 4x great grandfather, is Samuel Parsons, born 1812, Dudley, baptised 1814, St Thomas Church, Dudley.  In the 1871 census, he is in Tipton at Seven Stars and places his birth as Netherton.  Parents, Thomas Parsons and Sophia.

The only marriage I can find is in 1821, Thomas Parsons and Sophia Whitehouse in St Thomas Dudley, they both are noted as Widowed.

But I can't find a marriage for Thomas first wife, I assume another Sophia, and her maiden name is not but on the baptism for any of the children...

Dublin / SALMON mystery.
« on: Tuesday 20 December 16 11:31 GMT (UK)  »
My biggest brick wall is that of my great grandmother.  Here is what I know.

In 1897, she married Cornelius Driscoll, in Preston, Lancashire.  She is of full age.  Her father is noted as James Salmon, market gardener.  They marry in a Roman Catholic church.  He was born in to a family of Church Of Ireland. (Would he have had to be rebaptised to become a Catholic)?

1898, first daught Mary Anne O'Driscoll is born, in Dublin.

Fast forward to 1911, six children have been born, the last child being Anastacia who died as a baby.
Mary Anne, Rose, Catherine, Joseph, Cornelius and Anastacia.

1901 census and 1911 census, the O'Driscoll family are living in Swords, Dublin.  She puts her place of birth as Dublin.  Cornelius is from Kildare.  Age wise, her birth of year works out to be around 1872-1874.

1925, there is a death record for her in Swords, again, it puts her birth at around 1873.

I cannot, anywhere, find a birth of Mary Salmon, around these years, with the father James.  I presume he is alive by the time they marry, as Cornelius father has died and he writes that his dad is deceased, whereas Mary does not.

There is a Mary Salmon in 1875, born in Kilkenny, to a father James, but Kilkenny looks quite far away?

The only other Salmon name I have to go on, are as follows, on the marriage cert of Mary and Cornelius, there is a Catherine Salmon as a witness.  And when Rose O'Driscoll (my great great aunt) died in 1924, the informant is a Bridget Salmon.

Can anyone help?  I've gone over ever Mary Salmon on irishgenealogy, i've search until I couldn't search anymore on rootsireland, I've scoured the newspaper for Dublin and for Preston, I have look on the 1901 and 1911 census for James Salmon and i've search for Mary Salmon in England in 1891...

I am really stuck!  I've only managed to find Cornelius Driscolls birth in 1874 and his parents marriage in 1865, and then I'm stuck again!
