Lancashire / Death of Thomas Arrowsmith
« on: Sunday 01 December 19 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there folks. I am seeking a provable solution to the death of my great grandfather Thomas Arrowsmith.,and, additional information regarding some of the other folk mentioned. To give some background to this I will say that "Tom" was the last born child of Edward and Elizabeth Makinson Baptism 28 May 1882 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England. He married Violet Hodkinson [ Marriages Dec 1904   Leigh    8c392 ] and had numerous children including my grandfather [now deceased]. The last born child was found in 1939 in a mental institution which somehow leads to my great grandmother remarrying to John Cox [ Marriages Jun 1945  Horwich    8c974  ]. This is cert reference I believe to be one related to my great grandmother.....Deaths Jun 1955   Cox Violet    age 73    Bolton 10b614.;proving death 31st May 1955 and cremation 2nd June 1955.    The death of John Cox is at present assumed to be age 70 [b 1887 where? ] died Apr/Jun 1957 Bolton 10b611 with a probate suggesting death 11th June 1957 being of 526 Halliwell Rd Bolton announcing a John Cox butcher......but I can not find any substaining evidence.
The other thought here is lack of a divorce record....???
Now the tree on ancestry indicated 1929 as death, but unfortunately, as the census showed me there was a parallel family in Cheshire and the Thomas of Cheshire through his probate gives money to Frank; which co-incidently the name of my grandfather.  I have looked on freebmduk and done the maths against certs, I have looked on Lancs OPC without any success. I am not judging the tree on ancestry because the person who owns the tree came in from  a certain branch which was estranged to my branch so their assumption given the records available on ancestry would have linked to the Cheshire line.......      So anyone who has time to look at this please put your thoughts forward.  Thank you.

Wiltshire / Downton OPC ... a question
« on: Tuesday 29 November 16 06:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there.....

I have attempted to look at the pdf supplied on Wiltshire OPC site for " Baptisms   1599-1624 "
as part of that websites transcriptions offered....

There is a point which needs to be clarified.......   Is the pdf showing the way the register is in current format without years, dates or surnames OR has there been a boo boo in selecting the data from the transcribers computer to make the pdf ?????

I know some registers get damage but I was hoping to check that part of the register for an illusive family branch....

thank you for any clarifications of folk who either transcribed the data or have viewed the register or who have read the microfilm.......

London and Middlesex / Hilton family of London
« on: Tuesday 15 November 16 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
1. I am looking into a marry in of one Richard Shergold to one Mary Hilton referred to by Boyds Index as marrying 1729 at London St Michael Crooked Lane.......   which doesnt appear on fs.o as far as I can determine.......    so firstly is there anyone who might have access to information ...ie newspapers, or transcripts of registers etc and so forth that may get a solution instead of a year.......  with thanks.

2. Well I looked up the Hiltons through Mary ,    and came up with some possible solutions or scenarios that may be already solved by another researcher....  as to whom the correct Mary is that married the Shergold....

a] Richard & Mary Hilton at St Botolph Aldgate christened Mary 12 Apr 1702 who is buried 20 Jun 1710, Elizabeth chr 29 Oct 1703 who probably died infantile, George chr Sept 1706, Elizabeth chr 22 Mar 1708, Thomas chr 29 July 1709 , Mary chr 13 Sept 1711 with a possibly attached child Christine Hilton chr at St Martin in the Fields 26 Oct 1701 indicating a marriage before 1701.

b] Mary Hilton chr 23 July 1702 by Robt / Eliz at St Marys Whitechapel.

c] Mary Hilton chr James / Sarah 26 July 1713 St Bride Fleet St London........

There were other options of Lancashire, Notts etc but I find those not warranting attention.

Mary as Shergold is still alive round 1749 /50 as by the jargon on the probate of Richard Shergold but to date I have not ascertained her death.......  which probably in the most likely scenario would be from an obituary or funeral notification.... which again I have not been able to source....

And finally of this; I am looking for a burial of the said Richard stockbroker in the area of St Bartholomew . Stock Exchange as he wished to be interred there according to the probate and that document was written in 1749.   Also since he was associated heavily with that parish church has anybody been studying the memorials, tombstones or hatchments to see if there is a mention of my illustrious chap.......

One clue that may assist this post is the occupation of my Shergold is stockbroker with ties to business and church affairs.

With thanks to all who reply but please remember I have used anc and FindMyPast for this and cannot seem to get a final solution...... :)

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Canter of Great Somerford / Malmesbury
« on: Monday 03 August 15 01:41 BST (UK)  »
i have what appears to be one Thomas Canter marrying an Elizabeth Shergold or Shurgold......

 The Wiltshire bmd is showing children as John[b 1849], William [b 1851] Edward James [b 1853] , Mary J [b 1857], Clara [b 1859], Eleanor A or Hannah [b 1863] and mentioned as Ellen in 1871, and Emily Louisa [b 1864].
The Wiltshire bmd suggests all children born in Malmesbury area and I would assume more to the point that is actually Great Somerford ......

A 1911 census puts Eleanor Hannah in St Mary Abbots Terrace Kensington as a single housemaid servant with other folk in the abode......

BEFORE my internet connection started grieving me painfully I managed to find an 1871 census for the family all bar John who was either not at home or otherwise indisposed.....

So.....   I would like to explore a] the census of 1871 for the occupations of the household, and determine Johns position in 1871......
then I would like to find the blessed marriage of Thomas to Elizabeth Shergold / Shurgold....

Now in the entries of Wilts BMD was another listing for the Canter family in Malmesbury for a Thomas Canter born 1854 but the mothers maiden name as Cottle.......
So i need to find out more about this child as I have a problem and that is the Cottle family was also related to the Shurgold family so is this woman Cottle/ Shergold/ Canter......

also any sub inf regarding this family like who is Elizabeths parents and Thomas must have a family from somewhere.....  then when did they all marry, die give issue to etc.......    but occupation and abodes may be important here please...............................thanks..

Gloucestershire / Solomon Whitchurch
« on: Tuesday 10 March 15 08:37 GMT (UK)  »
goodaye folks>>>

I have been researching the life of Solomon Whitchurch who from a tobacco worker and insurance worker in Bristol GLS ventures to Australia where he becomes a Baptist Minister.    To date I have his birth cert, baptism, complete censuses, electoral roll entries, death cert, probate, and a few of his passenger records travelling to and from the UK..       However , >>>>>>>>>>

I am missing a passenger record him travelling to the UK before 8/9 Nov 1930.......

The next problem I am facing is where in heck did he do his Seminary Training for the Baptist church????????????????????????????????????????????????

So if anyone knows a little more than I on a] is there a Baptist Training school in Bristol that would have been going from say 1900 to the immigration of Solomon in 1912 to Australia......

OR

Is there is Baptist Ministry Training facility in Melbourne Victoria Australia.....

or did the Baptists just give the incoming rectors or priests a Bible and a church and leave the rest up to them to do????  [ which I find unlikely.......]     Note I did find one electoral roll where he was living with a rector in Victoria who may have been his guidance.....

So I guess what I need is links to a] learn more about the in depth training of Baptists and b] some resolve on that infernal passenger record....

To add to the dilema someone has come forward who is a grandchild of Solomons sib George who actually met this chap..... so I would like to complete a biography as that person only met Solomon when they were knee high to a grasshopper....   cheers folks
