Lancashire / Joseph Stewart - tracing origin
« on: Friday 22 March 19 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to trace Joseph Stewart - he married Anne Stringer (I requested some assistance with the Stringer line as well and got some much needed assistance).
I am now trying to find out where my line of Stewarts comes from.
I know that Joseph Stewart who married Anne Stringer (Liverpool 1820) and had 9 children in total, including my great-great grandfather, William Stringer Stewart. William Stringer Stewart spent many years in India and Sri Lanka and I am pretty clued up on the Stewarts from his generation forward.
For years now I was led to believe by my grandfather's notes that Joseph was descended of the Balquhidder Stewarts, but I discovered a couple of days ago that the only Joseph in that line died, unmarried in his twenties. So, back to the drawing board. I do know that Joseph Stewart was a mariner, and I have found one listed - attachment below. His birth date of 1795 seems to fit with the marriage date of 1820. It also says he was born in Lancashire, and the majority of records for his family seem to be based in Lancashire.
Is anyone able to assist me in tracing his parents/grandparents etc.?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Lancashire / William Stringer - research assistance needed please
« on: Thursday 21 March 19 08:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have in family records, a William Stringer who married an Anne (surname unknown) in Liverpool in about 1799.
They had a daughter named Ann(e) Stringer, who married a Joseph Stewart in Liverpool. They, in turn, had a son named William Stringer Stewart (1826-1904). He married Sarah Maria Mann (1859-1911). They lived in India and Sri Lanka, and I have plenty of information on the children as they are my great-grand relatives.
I have no definite dates for William Stringer, his wife, or their daughter, Anne, other than some assistance I received a few years back that Ann(e) Stringer, the daughter, may have been born in 1800 in Liverpool, Lancashire. It is also mentioned that she may have been christened Nancy...???

I have managed to find reference to a Joseph Stewart marrying an Ann Stringer of the 19th of November, 1820 at St. Johns Old Haymarket, Liverpool, Lancashire.
I am struggling to work back from there.

If anyone can assist with any info on Ann(e) Stinger (Spelling varies on all the Ann/Annes), William Stringer and his wife, the unknown Ann(e), it would be greatly appreciated, as I do not currently have access to full documentation.

regards,
Shannon

Other Countries / INDIA/CEYLON - Kenneth John
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 07:59 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more information on my grandfather's uncle, Kenneth John.  I have family records stating that after WW1 he was posted to Queen victoria's Own Poona Horse Guard.  Does anyone know if there is a way to find any records of those who served in this regiment.  I do know that he was a Commanding Officer when he retired.  I am guessing that he was born in the 1890s.  Although his parents were based in Ceylon , his mother seemed to return to Portobello, Scotland to give birth to his sister, Doris, in 1894.  I have no records of his birth through family records so I do not know if he was born in Ceylon or Scotland as well.  I thought that possible a way to find out more about him would be to go the Horse Guard route.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / William Stringer and relatives
« on: Sunday 09 October 05 09:01 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out any information for a William Stringer.  I have no birth date, but from family records I have it recorded that he married a lady by the name of Anne/Ann - no surname and that they were married in Liverpool in 1799.  How accurate this is I am not sure.  They had a daughter Anne/Ann who according to family records was christened as Nancy - I have looked up both names with no success.  She married Joseph Stewart in 1820 in Liverpool at St Johns Old Haymarket.
I am looking for any information available regarding this family.

I have looked on ancestry.co.uk and various sites related to lancashire, but haven't had any luck - this may be from lack of experience.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Family of Joseph Stewart

I am trying to confirm if the information I have for a Joseph Stewart,(born c1831) listed on the 1871 census (ancestry.co.uk) is indeed for the Joseph Stewart born to Joseph Stewart (b1798) and Ann Stringer in 1820.

How do I confirm if I am looking at the wife and children of the correct Joseph Stewart as there are a few Joseph Stewarts listed with birth dates around 1831.

Sligo / WYNNEs of Sligo
« on: Sunday 02 October 05 07:35 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about a Nicholas Cooper Wynne (mother's grandfather) born 18/11/1877 in Ireland and died in 1956 in South Africa.  The birth date was aquired from the IGI and the death date my mother gave me first hand.  She knew his age when he died so we do know that the year he was born in is correct.  The IGI also lists his parents as Thomas Wynne and Susanna Wynne Fox (I do find the mother's name perplexing as I am not sure if the Wynne is a second name or part of the surname.)
I know that he is descended of the Wynnes of Hazelwood in county Sligo.  Thanks to some help from a woman in Ireland I have quite a bit of info on the Wynnes of Hazelwood, but only the "important" son's lives were covered and not the other branches.  As a result of this I have huge gaps.

Nicholas Cooper Wynne married an Irish woman in Ireland in the late 1800's and we know they had two sons - Eric and the other known as Bull, but we are not sure if this was his given name or a nickname - I am assuming the latter.  Unfortunately we have no dates.  Either she then died or they separated and he came out to South Africa to fight with the Boers against the British in the Anglo-Boer War.   He married a South African woman - we think an Erasmus and had two sons.  The elder - Owen Edgar Wynne was born in 1919 in Ireland and the younger - Eamon Anthony born 1921, we think in South Africa.

I have no other information.
I have been to some of the links posted on this site for Sligo, but am having no luck.  It's a total shot in the dark, but does anyone have any information at all regarding the Irish information.  Any info at all will be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find out any information about Kenneth John.
He was born to Edwin John (b c1865 in England - probably Barking Essex d 1930's)
and Margaret Elizabeth Anderson (no information yet).  Edwin remarried a Rose Sinclair after Margaret's death, but I am pretty sure that Kenneth is Margaret's son.
They did have a daughter Doris Margaret - my great grandmother.  She was born 07/08/1894 in Portobello Scotland.  She was cristened in 1894 in Epsom, Surrey.  She married Trevor Stringer Stewart on 11/08/1915 at St Michael's Palwatte, Colombo.  She died in South Africa in 1953.
Kenneth and his father Edwin appear in Colombo in old family photos and I do know that he served in Queen Victoria's own Poona Horse Regiment - we have the photo.  I have searched Ancestry.co.uk extensively and he has not turned up anywhere.
I also do not know if he was older or younger than his sister Doris.  By all accounts the family moved around a lot and he could very well have been born in India or Sri Lanka.
Does anyone have any advice as to how to get information regarding the families born in Sri Lanka and India.  Thanks to really good records of my granfather's father's family (Stewart side) I have all the birth dates and death dates of that side of the family - all were born in Bombay or Colombo.
I have tried to find information from the British East India company but it seems that the records are unavailable - unless I am not looking in the correct place.
I would really appreceiate any help tracing Kenneth and any help on how to get information on families connected to the British East India company serving in India and Colombo.

Family History Beginners Board / Edwin John

Ok, this is a case of knowing a very little bit about nothing.  So far our family records have been quite good.  I have, however, hit a brick wall on my grandfather's mother's side of the family - The John family.

The person I am particularly interested in is Edwin John.  The most interesting thing about himwas that he and his brother, George, started up John Brothers & Co in Colombo and Kandy in Sri Lank in 1876.
I have it recorded in family records that he died in Epsom, Surrey in 1902.  From scratching around I think I finally found a birth date of 1841 in Somerset, Bridgewater.  I do not know, however, if this is correct.
His parents were George William and Joanna Clouter, and he married a Miss James (very helpfull  ???).
His children are Edwin, Margaret Ethel, Reginald, Mabel and Dora.
That is all I have,
Can anyone help at all... ??? ??? ???

Family History Beginners Board / Osborn Family
« on: Saturday 24 September 05 09:45 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm the birth, christening and death date of a Jane Osborn - born to George Osborn and Hannah Lambly.  The information I have is as follows:
George Osborn (b 10/04/1764, Rochester, Kent - d 05/05/1836, Rochester, Kent)
Hannah Lambly (b 07/12/1769 - Ipswich, Suffolk - d 18/12/1847, Rochester, Kent

Children:
George Osborn (b 17/04/1802, england - d 13/03/1803, england) - I need to confirm this as well

George Osborn (b 28/03/1808, england - d 18/04/1891, england) married Elizabeth Chubb 16/08/1833 (b 11/1810, england - chr 06/01/1811 - d12/05/1898)

Jane Osborn - I have 2 conflicting christening dates for her:
b 01/12/1779, england - Chr 18/08/1798, London - Chr 14/01/1798, Bethel-Wesleyan, Rochester, Kent.
I am leaning towards the second christening date being correct as the parents are from Rochester, Kent.

If anyone can confirm these dates of offer the correct ones it would be great, and I would also like to know if there are any other children.
