Hi to the list. Have been trying to nail my 3xGGFather for 40 years and have recently learnt that he was among the first cohort of Engine Drivers to drive on the Indian Railways from 1862. I have found a possible reference to him in 1866 in the Bombay Gazette. No records in Familysearch, or FIBIS for him in India and no Passenger transit records either.  Apparently the India Office Collection (British Library) do not contain any Staff Employment records so am a little unsure where else to look. He was born around 1826 +/- place unknown in the UK possibly Southampton. Married Caroline Lambert in 1860 in Peterborough, UK, no obvious record of his return to the UK, no obvious death in UK or India. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Northumberland / Christchurch Tynemouth Gravestones
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Good morning to the list. I am certain that this topic has been touched on before but unfortunately could not find it.

Does anyone know (or have) a list of the gravestones that were transferred from Christchurch churchhard to Preston Cemetery (I think) around about 1955.

On going through some old papers belonging to my late mother I came across a reference to an MI she recorded many years ago on a visit to the Society of Genealogists in London. Specifically I am looking for a headstone of Georgge BALMER, Painter and Glazier who died 28 May 1829. Is this one of the lucky stones to have survived or has it been ground up for hardcore?

Many thanks,

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Huthwaite Cemetery
« on: Thursday 26 January 12 20:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello to the list.

My great grandparents Alfred George ARROWSMITH (d 1943) and Louisa ARROWSMITH (d 1927)were both buried in Huthwaite Cemetery. I have the reference of the plot from the Cemetery Register: Section A. Col 3a. No. 2 . But I am not sure whether there is a Headstone or not. Can anyone tell me whether the Monumental Inscriptions for Huthwaite have been published or if some kind soul happens to be going to the cemetery would they mind having a look for me?

Many thanks,

The Reverend Ernest Arthur INGHAM was Rector of St Mary's Church, Willoughby Waterleys and All Saint's Church, Peatling Magna from 1922 to his death in January 1940.

Can anyone tell me whether he and his wife Sarah were buried in Willoughby Waterleys and whether there is a Gravestone?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

« on: Saturday 03 December 11 17:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi to the list,

Does anyone have access to the Marriage registers for St Peter's Mansfield for 1867 or would anyone have time to have a quick look form me at the Notts CRO? I have a marriage between Samuel TOMLINSON and Jane CHADBURN which took place on I believe the 07 Apr 1867. I am interested to know who her father was?

Can anyone help please?

Thanks,

Stephen

Northumberland / 12 men of Coanwood
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 15:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello to the list,

One of my FreeREG transcribers has been working on the burials for Haltwhistle and has come across an entry in 1777 relating to a William BELL with the anecdote "One of the 12 men of Coanwood".

Does anyone know what or who the "12 men of Coanwood" were?

Thanks and regards,

Stephen Andrews

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hill Crest, Bawtry
« on: Tuesday 14 December 10 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon to the list,

One of my ancestors a Philip Isaiah Martin was reportedly living at Hill Crest, Bawtry around 1914.

According to a Doncaster Local Authority Planning Report, Hill Crest was still standing in 2005.

Does anyone know of its whereabouts or perhaps where I could obtain a photo?

Thanks and regards,

Just thought I'd post the latest update to the list concerning the FreeREG project for Northumberland. We now have over 81,000 records in the database with more being added later this month.

Please feel free to have a browse, data includes records (partial) for  Bamburgh, Berwick upon Tweed, Blyth, Bothal, Bywell St Andrew and St Peter, Chatton, Corbridge, Corsenside, Cramlington, Edlingham, Felton, Ford, Hebburn, Hexham, Horton, Ingram, Netherwitton, Newcastle All Saints, Seghill, Stamfordham, Tynemouth, Whittingham and Woodhorn. Details of what is available in the database can be seen here

http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/nbl.htm

If anyone is interested in helping us transcribe registers, or bishops transcripts for this project please contact me. If anyone has transcripts already available that they would be prepared to allow FreeREG to use (we would of course acknowledge this on our website) I again would be delighted to hear from you.

Good morning to the list.

Have come across an ancestor who appears in the 1891 Hucknall under Huthwaite Census, where his occupation is described as a Professional Cricketer. This intrigued me somewhat as in the previous census he is described as a Framework Knitter and the following census as a Labourer in a Soap Factory.

Have tried googling his name and occupation to no avail. Anyone out there know anything about him? Who he played for? Where I could look next?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks and regards,

Stephen Andrews
