Durham / Thomas T Fletcher and family 1911
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Some of the information I have about the family of THOMAS TRUEMAN FLETCHER, my paternal grandfather, is a bit confusing.

The 1911 England and Wales Census - taken on 2 April - has Thomas T, his wife MARY JANE (née DICKSON), my father EDWARD and his sisters NORAH and ELIZABETH living at 17 HACKWORTH STREET, DEAN BANK, FERRYHILL, CO:DURHAM

The birth certificate of my father’s brother JAMES DICKSON FLETCHER says he was born on 13 October 1911 at 5 EMILY STREET, WHEATLEY HILL, WINGATE, Co: Durham.

Wheatley Hill was in the Easington Registration District in County Durham.

Wheatley Hill is roughly 13 miles from Ferryhill.

There is an outline of Jim”s place and date of birth on his Death Certificate.

I had initially assumed that Thomas T had moved his family from Ferryhill to Wheatley Hill between April and October 1911 when Mary Jane would have been heavily pregnant.

Info in findmypast.co.uk records of County Durham Electoral Rolls for the relevant period is

The 1911@  and 1912* Electoral Rolls for the DEAN BANK N Polling District of the township of FERRYHILL in MID DURHAM Polling Division of the Parliamentary County of Durham also have Thomas T living at 17 HACKWORTH STREET, DEAN BANK,

[The qualifying date for entry in Electoral Rolls for years between 1979 and 1914 was 15 July.]

Price Smallwood occupied 5 EMILY STREET, WHEATLEY HILL, WINGATE in 1908, 1909, 1911, 1912 and 1913 - Electoral Rolls for the Wheatley Hill Polling District Nn of the township of Wingate in Durham South-Eastern Polling Division of the Parliamentary County of Durham.

No results were found when Find My Past was searched for 1910 Wheatley Hill Electoral Roll entries for Thomas Trueman Fletcher’s family, for Price Smallwood and some of his 1909/1911 Emily Street neighbours.

5 Emily Street appears to have been a private house.

I have no record of any known relatives of Thomas T or Mary Jane living in Wheatley Hill in the relevant years.

Thomas T and Mary Jane were living in SHERBURN HILL, Co: Durham when my father and my mother married in 1933.

I should be grateful for any help to remove some of the confusion.

Durham / 1891 Census - Fletcher family of Tanfield Lea, Tanfield
« on: Tuesday 07 April 20 17:05 BST (UK)  »
I have come across what looks like a transcription error. My "findings" may be of interest to anyone looking for the Fletcher family of Tanfield Lea, Tanfield, Durham in the 1891England, Wales and Scotland Census.

The forebears family in whom I am currently interested are

Edward   Fletcher   Head Married   Coal Miner
John F   Fletcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
Edward   Fletcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
William R   Fletcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
Thomas T   Fletcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
Joseph   Fletcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner

No relevant records were found when findmypast.co.uk was searched for Edward [born about 1841] and Thomas Trueman/T* Fletcher [born about 1875].

In 1891 Mary H Carr [born about 1872] was the family’s General Servant (Domestic). A search for Mary found a Census image and transcription at https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBC%2F1891%2F4086%2F0271&parentid=GBC%2F1891%2F0028013041 - subscription required.

The transcript gives these details of the household

Edward   Hetcher   Head Married   Coal Miner
John F   Hetcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
Edward   Hetcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
William R   Hetcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
Thomas J   Hetcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner
Joseph   Hetcher   Son   Single   Coal Miner

The Gender, Age, Birth Year, and Place of Birth of each Hetcher are identical to those of their Fletcher "namesake".

The image shows that in 1891 Edward, his family and Mary Carr were living in 10 William Street, Tanfield Lea, Durham, England. The handwriting is such that transcription errors appear to have been made - the Fl could easily be read as H and the Thomas T as Thomas J.

A report of the errors is in the hands of Findmypast.co.uk

Durham / 1930 and 1931 Electoral Registers
« on: Saturday 21 March 20 18:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me either the Qualifying Date for these Registers or where I can find these Dates.

I have a copy of the image/transcript of the page in relevant County Durham Register for my paternal grandparents and my father. Unfortunately the transcripts, unlike some for other years, do mention the Qualifying and "Coming Into Force" dates.

Thank you in advance for your help.

World War One / WW1 Armed Forces - First Aid Certificate holder volunteers
« on: Saturday 15 February 20 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find links to a website or other information about articles I understand the Government asked local newspapers to run early in WW1. The Government wanted the holders of first aid certificates to volunteer for service in the armed forces.

I would be grateful for any help you can give me.

John Charles Hunter (1885 - 1967) was a stoneman in a coal mine in South West Durham before he became a Colliery Chargeman (Underground) some time between 2 April and 22 July 1911. UK coal mining internet sources suggest that the duties of a Chargehand were performed by a Deputy in later decades.

From the early 1900s UK Mining Law required a Chargehand/Deputy to hold a valid first aid certificate.

Coal mining was considered to be important to the UK in World War 2. Coal miners were exempt from being called up to serve in the armed forces. They were in a reserved occupation.

I believe coal miners were not exempt from being called up to serve in the armed forces during the First World War.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum holds a complete WW1 service record for John Charles - he served in Gallipoli and France with the Royal Marines Medical Unit of the Royal Naval Division. He was Mustard Gassed in France.

He returned to Coal Mining after his early 1919 demob.

John Charles may have joined up after reading a local newspaper article asking holders of first aid certificates to volunteer.

Armed Forces / WW2 - 466/135 (M) HAA Regiment Royal Artillery
« on: Tuesday 02 April 19 17:12 BST (UK)  »
I should be grateful for any info that would help me to find where 466/135 (M) HAA Regiment Royal Artillery [Territorial Army] was stationed in the Second World War.

Edward Crawford (1904 - 1984) was my father-in-law. In civilian life he was a Monumental Sculptor in Edinburgh.

His Second World War Territorial Army Record of Service includes these details:

Army Number 1815898.

Granted a deferment

Deemed to have on 24 July 1941

Actually joined on 7 August 1941.

Spent the whole of his period of war service in the UK.

First posting - 210 AA Training Regiment Royal Artillery, Oswestry

Family folklore says he was billeted/on a gun in a London Park.

The Commanding Officer, who signed Edward's Notification of Impending Release, may have been stationed in Dover.

I should be grateful for any help that points me in the direction of on line records of the birth of JOHN GEOGHEGAN, born in Edinburgh – possibly in Potterrow - about 1905. Chats with some descendants of his sister Margaret Geoghegan – mentioned below - suggest he spent the whole of his life in Edinburgh.

Edward Crawford (born Jamaica Street, Edinburgh on 14 March 1904) married Margaret Geoghegan (born Potterrow, Edinburgh on 11 October1909) at Lady Glenorchy Parish Church, Edinburgh, on 13 Jul 1928.

Margaret was the fourth child of Thomas Geoghegan (born Ireland about 1874) and Mary Ann Geoghegan (née Rogan).

Mary Ann Geoghegan was the daughter of John Rogan, a Mason's labourer and Bridget Rogan (née McGuffy). Mary Ann had two brothers: James Rogan (born about 1876), Patrick Rogan (born about 1880).

[Searches are not currently being undertaken for ancestors born in Ireland].

Margaret Geoghegan had 5 siblings: Marie Geoghegan (born 3 May 1901)), John Geoghegan (born about 1905), Francis Geoghegan (born 11 June 1908), Thomas Geoghegan (born 7 June 1912) and Maria Geoghegan (born 14 August 1914) . Marie and Maria were also known as Kate and Maree Geoghegan respectively.

The dates of birth mentioned above were found on images and transcripts of Roman Catholic Parish Baptisms Scotland records downloaded from findmypast.co.uk.

The 1911 Census entry for the family of Thomas and Mary Ann Geoghegan has them living at 88 Potterrow, Edinburgh. The members of the family listed are
Thomas Geoghegan, Head, aged 39, Masons Labourer
Mary Ann Geoghegan, wife, aged 37
Kate Geoghegan [aka Marie], daughter, aged 8
John Geoghegan, son, aged 6
Francis Geoghegan, son, aged 3
Maggie Geoghegan [presumably Margaret], daughter, aged 2.

Civil and parish searches - including wild card, fuzzy and sounds like on Ancestry, Findmypast, ScotlandsPeople and FamilySearch -
for the birth of John Geoghegan have drawn a blank.
