Scotland / Viewing images in ScotlandsPeople
« on: Saturday 09 March 19 22:33 GMT (UK)  »
From memory, you used to be able to choose the image type you wished to view on ScotlandsPeople, e.g. you could choose jpg, tiff etc based on your preferences and you could choose whether you wanted a header on the image.

Are these options still available? If they are how do you setup your preferences?

Cheers

A couple of christenings of interest to me:

Janet Donaldson, natural daughter of Janet Donaldson was born on the 24th July 1802 and baptized on the 24th March 1811 by the Revd Dr John Lee.

Alexander Donaldson, natural son of the said Janet Donaldson was born on the 25th March 1805 and baptized on the 24th March 1811 by the Revd Dr John Lee, Minr Peebles.

If anyone happens to have access to the Kirk Session Records for Peebles Parish, I'd appreciate if they could have a look for any references to these two births.

I suspect that Alexander is the son of John Brodie & Alison Logan (John christened 9 Jan 1785, son of John Brodie, smith in Shortlandend near Temple Bar. John Brodie married Margaret Thorburn and died 1860 in Rutherford Villa, Linton).

Alexander Brodie of Linton Parish and Martha Hastings (Hastie) marry in Westruther on 12 Apr 1835. In each of the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census, Alexander's birthplace is given as Peebeles, Peeblesshire.

Surrey / Applying for birth record with no GRO reference
« on: Monday 09 January 12 07:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Do people think it's worth applying to GRO even if there isn't an entry in the GRO index for a birth?

I have a George Henry TOMKINS (son of George TOMKINS and Sophia BEANEY) who I can't find in the GRO index.

Information from each released census gives he was:
1881: 4 year old male, born Camberwell, Surrey
1891: 14 year old male, born Camberwell
1901: 25 year old male, born Peckham, Kent
1911: 33 year old male born Kent

From his Merchant Navy identity certificate, his date and place of birth are 22 Aug 1876 L'don, England.

Is it possible he's been missed in the GRO index?

Cheers

« on: Saturday 15 October 11 00:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Would anyone know if there would be any records for admission to St Josephs Orphanage for Boys, Abbey House, Romsey?

In the 1901 census there were:

James Wilding, Boarder, S, M, 7, Pupil Orphan, Hampshire Aldershot
Henry Wilding, Boarder, S, M, 5, Pupil Orphan, Hampshire Aldershot

I can't find a birth for them in FreeBMD.

Cheers
