Kent / H M Convict Prison Chatham Kent

My great, great, great uncle was a prisoner here in 1881, but he was convicted 1879.  His name was John Wm. Mears Lingard. I'm not sure what he was convicted for as i find it hard to read what it says. I think something along the lines of stealing letters?
Does anyone know anything about the prison during this time? And does anyone know if there are any prisoner photographs?
