Armed Forces / RAF service record - Meaning of Unit code PC.S.B. (a) in 1927
« on: Sunday 28 April 24 11:51 BST (UK)  »
As shown in the red box, what is the meaning of "PC.S.B. (a)" in this RAF service record? He was an armourer.

Thanks in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Unknown for dating - England
« on: Monday 22 January 24 18:40 GMT (UK)  »
I'd like an approximate date for the attached photo of a young English woman. It may be my great grandmother who was born 1865 and married 1884.
The reverse is a blank postcard of 5 x 3.5 inches (also attached).
To my mind, the style of clothing seems older than is apparently right for such a postcard. I thought it looked mid-1880s but such postcards are apparently >1900. Might an older photo have been reprinted?

Cheers...

Census and Resource Discussion / Strange employment in 1921 census
« on: Thursday 29 December 22 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
What do you make of this? Trying to make sense of what's recorded as a great uncle's employment. He was living in Wandsworth as a steam wagon driver but appears to have been working for "Strand Hotel Ltd" whose business was "pig wash collection & fat manufactors" located at 16 Charles Street, Haymarket, London SW1.

Surely he was joking?

Google hasn't helped at all! :-\

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Restoration - Boxford cottage
« on: Wednesday 30 March 22 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone with more photo improvement experience than me kindly get rid of the shadows on this picture? It's a photo of an old framed photo of a cottage at Boxford Berks that was taken outside on a sunny day with an iphone, complete with shadows that shouldn't be there!
I've had a go myself at cleaning it up (see "my edit") but am clearly not competent.

Thanks in advance...

Occupation Interests / Seafarer's wage in 1890 -- £300 for 5 days work??
« on: Tuesday 29 December 20 11:31 GMT (UK)  »
The attached screenshot taken from from the "Canada, Seafarers of the Atlantic Provinces, 1789-1935" database on Ancestry with details of my great great grandfather. He seems to have been paid an enormous wage of £300 for the 5 day voyage from Exmouth, Devon to Barry in Wales. Surely that can't be correct?
According the National Archives tool that would be over £25,000 now!

Is it probably a case where the database entry should have been 3.00 instead? I found that wages of others in this database are similarly high, so seems to be a systematic error.

Essex / Harriet GODDEN died West Ham Q2/1856
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know more about her? Does the parish burial record have any additional details (e.g. age, next of kin, single/married, etc.).

I'm wondering if she is the elusive ancestor that seems to have disappeared from records after 8-May-1856 following the birth of her son George (she wasn't married) in the Winchester Union workhouse. George was then brought-up by her parents in the South Stoneham area of Hampshire.

My Harriet was born at Botley (Hants) in Q1/1837.

Many thanks for your interest....

« on: Saturday 20 October 18 13:45 BST (UK)  »
This is part of soldiers' medical records in July 1917 from FindMyPast.
I can't decipher the disease/injury for the man I'm interested in. There are 4 men with the same affliction...the first 3 and the last in this list and it seems to be "disorders of dev....."  ???

Anyone work it out?
Thanks...
