Nottinghamshire / Finningley - Poll Book Address Location - what does it mean?
« on: Sunday 06 March 22 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All, in the 1836 register of electors in East Retford Poll Book an ancestor living in Finningley is described as being qualified to vote by having "House and Land" this is located in "Land in Field and Common" but does anybody know where this might be? Does it refer to a particular part of Finningley? Any help welcome. Thanks.

Gloucestershire / Help with making sense of Tewkesbury Parish Register
« on: Sunday 07 April 19 22:44 BST (UK)  »
I may be missing something but I can't work this out. ???

Ancestry lists the baptism of Mary Matthews, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, on the 11 April 1805 in Tewkesbury. When you look at the document it appears to be a bishops Transcript.

However when compared to the Tewkesbury parish register none of the names of those baptised in April match.

I thought that the document might refer to burials but they don't match either.

I can't fathom it out - I would be grateful if someone could have a second look for me. Thanks.

« on: Wednesday 20 March 19 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I have just learned that the corpses of those who died of Small Pox on the Hospital Ship Atlas were taken to Homerton hospital for burial.

Can anyone tell me what cemetery Homerton Hospital would have used?

Thanks

The Common Room / Married Twice?
« on: Thursday 14 March 19 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I have just found a couple that apparently married twice.

James Gressam married Emott Drewrye on 9 Feb 1587 in Finningley and the marriage is entered in the parish register accordingly.

the following day - 10 Feb 1587

James Grossam [sic] married Emmatt Drurie [sic] in Wroot and once again the marriage is entered in the parish register.

Wroot is 7 miles from Finningley. Did they really get married twice? or might the marriage have been entered in one of the registers without the ceremony? Has anyone come across this before?

Berkshire / Legge or Thorne can anyone explain this please.
« on: Wednesday 27 June 18 18:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Using FindMyPast I have come across a series of births and two marriages in Aldermarston between 1601 and 1697 listed as surname "Legge or Thorne" or "Thorne or Legge" - or variant spellings thereof _ they only occur in Aldermarston and the same "Thorne or Legge" appears on Ancestry. Without being able to see the original registers I don't really understand why they should have two very different names? Has anyone come across this before - does anyone know what the surname was and why the choice? :-\ ???

Berkshire / Hitchcok or Hancock a second opinon please
« on: Sunday 24 June 18 20:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I would welcome a second opinion about John Hancock of Hampstead Norreys.

John died in 1811, his wife was Frances, died 1797.

Based on searches on FindMyPast John and Frances' children were the first Hitchcocks to be baptised in the Parish. Suggesting that John originally came from outside the parish. Searching on FindMyPast the only marriage I could find in the right time frame was that of John Hitchcock and Frances Legrande in Holborn in 1753. On further research however she proved to be the wife of a different John - she died in 1780.

Another search of FindMyPast looking for a Frances who married a John with a surname beginning with H revealed Frances Hearam (Harman) from East Ilesly, who married a John Hancock in Bucklebury in September 1758. I can find no children from this union, nor can I find and entry for Frances Hancocks burial or any remarriage. However this marriage would fit well with the first Hitchcock to appear in the Parish records of Hampstead Norreys.

Also Hampstead Norreys is almost exactly halfway between Bucklesbury and East Ilsley so perhaps it was a convenient place for them to settle.

Has anyone come across Hancock being turned into Hitchcock? Has anybody come across these families whilst researching? Does anyone have any suggestions how I might confirm or otherwise this idea?

Any help gratefully received.

Rob

The Common Room / Help with the interpretation of a legacy.
« on: Thursday 31 May 18 23:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

can anyone help, I have a copy of a will left made in 1586. One section reads:

Item I give to Margaret my daughter a hogget wether, a Charger and the best pewter salt. And I give to either of my said daughters twenty shillings in recompense of their parts of my farm, and the same to be paid them at the days of their marriages by them which shall enjoy the interest of my farm.

I am attaching an image of that section of the will.

I have always read this as saying that the daughters get 20 shillings paid to the time of their marriage, but does it actually mean they get 20 shillings there and then and another 20 shillings when they get married?

A would welcome a second opinion.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with a surname
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 22:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

Can anyone help with this surname.

The extract is from the Cantley, Yorkshire Parish Register. It is the wedding of "Robt Moulson to Margaret ?" 27 July 1641. It has been variously read as Killom and Hillom both of which are possible, I can see "Gressom". There is some writing in a different hand I can't make out, too. Does anyone have any thoughts.

Any help much appreciated.
