Australia / Williamstown - CHERRINGTON, Thomas Richard
« on: Monday 15 October 12 09:33 BST (UK)  »
Help! Thomas Richard Cherrington (b. about 1831 Staffordshire) has disappeared off the face of the earth. He was in Williamstown running a business as a currier and leather cutter from about 1871 (after being in Geelong for a few years).
He and wife Ada has 6 kids then all of a sudden, in about 1895, newspaper notices are referring to him as "the late". Ada and the kids then all moved to South Australia. Just before they moved I can see a newspaper ad where she and her elder daughter are setting up a small business, so I figure he's gone by then.
My problem is I can't find any record of death in Victoria, NSW or SA. I've checked divorces in Vic, some passenger lists (in case he just left home) and I've searched and searched on Trove with every combination of letters and words I can think of. I've also checked the cemetery indexes.
Just wondering perhaps anyone else is looking him up or might have another idea of how to find him.

Cornwall / Richard Hoskin Hammill
« on: Monday 15 October 12 03:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the birth and parent details for Richard Hoskin Hammill (born about 1812 in Cornwall, died 1874 in Adelaide, Australia) He arrived in Australia, I believe, in 1847 and was married twice.

Searching the Cornwall OPC and other places I keep finding references to a Richard Hosking Hammill (and variations of surname) who married a Sarah Gordon Pascoe in Cornwall, July 1837. She died a couple of years later. So it's possible that he left for Australia after that. In addition, his mother's name mentioned on the marriage details is Ann Hosken - so it's possible the Hosking/Hoskin corruption happened at some point.
But my problem is that someone else has claimed this Richard Hosking Hammill as theirs, saying he's on the 1871 census (although not on 1841 or 1851).

I'd love to hear from anyone who might know anything (or want to fight over him!)

Sussex / Thomas Henry Evans and Eliza Ekins, Brighton
« on: Monday 15 October 12 03:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm trying to find some information about Thomas Henry Evans (I think b. 1816 d. 1854) and Eliza Ekins (b. 1820).

I have them at 86 Kings Road, Brighton, Sussex in the 1851 census, running a haberdashery I believe.

By the 1861 Census, I think Thomas had died and Eliza was running a lodging house in Brighton. My problem is in confirming the birth and parents of both of them. I know that Eliza was born in Bury St Edmunds Suffolk and that they were married on 26 Sept 1847 in Brighton but I can't seem to get back to the next step.

Just wondered if, by chance, anyone else might be interested in these two?
