Dear Sir - I have my father's (John James Kavanagh) Soldier's Service and Pay book plus a reference letter from his last commanding officer Major D.P.Lloyd with the 77th Regiment dated 19 Jan. 1946.  When my father first enlisted in Aug. 1940 he was living in Birkenhead and then spent 3 years in a Coastal Defence Regiment in Devon.  He met my mother there in Shaldon, near Teignmouth, but I do not know where he was actually stationed at that time?  Can anyone help me with that?  I'm going to be visiting Shaldon in Sept.(from Canada) and would like to see if possible, where he was stationed.  He then went on to 63 Med. Regiment and shortly after DDay went to Northern Europe and towards the end of the war joined 77 (DLOY) Med. Rgmt.  Angela

I'm attempting to trace my grandmother Bridget Watters - who was born in Dundalk circa 1879-1880.  Her father was John Watters.  I know nothing else about her family.  She arrived in Birkenhead, England approx. 1900 where she worked in a restaurant/hotel as a kitchen maid before marrying William Kavanagh in 1904.  Her father was deceased at that time and I am unable to trace any more family as there are so many Bridget/John Watters in Dundalk at that time.  Any help would be great.  Angela

I'm trying to trace my gr-grandmother Elizabeth Smith born in Kings County, approx. 1848-50.  Father's name was John Smith.  She arrived in Birkenhead, England 1871 where she married James Kavanagh also newly arrived from Ireland but do not know where from.  Any help in finding exact birthplace for Elizabeth or her family would be a tremendous help.  Angela

I was interested in the names Kavanagh/Smyth combined as my great-great-grandfather James Kavanagh born 1848 in Ireland married an Elizabeth Smith (sometimes Smyth) also born in Ireland in 1872 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England.  They had 7 children but he left with his brother to emigrate to the U.S. somewhere between 1885 - 1891 and I believe was 'drowned at sea'.  Have yet to confirm that - obviously his brother made it to the states but I don't know his name or destination but believe it to be California.
