New Zealand Completed Requests / NZ (Auckland) newspaper lookup
« on: Tuesday 17 May 11 15:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
my genealogy bug's been dormant a wee while but started sifting thru notes tonight and figured it was time to follow up on a lead...I've hit a dead end so am trying to get in touch with living relatives down one line. My great-grandfather's sister was a Muade LAMBETH (nee THOMPSON) who died 11 Jan 1974 and was cremated in Waikumete Cemetery. I was figuring there might be a death notice in an Auckland paper around that date which might have more information on where her children (plus maybe grandchildren) were living...? Poss. better to PM me as likely to be living names (?)
cheers

Hi, I have now found some relatives and found I was barking up the wrong 'tree' in a bit - my new ancestors I am hoping to find on the 1841 census. The family would be a William (age ~50) and Mary Snowdon (age ~45). They would have ha a son James (12) and daughter Fanny (~16).

William was possibly a Colliery manager

All help much appreciated

New Zealand Completed Requests / Dunedin Newspaper lookup July 1916
« on: Friday 10 March 06 12:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My great grandfather's brother L/Cpl Stanley THOMPSON died en route to the UK 19th July 1916 of measles (?!).
He left behind a wife Susan and they had lived in Dunedin. I figured there may be something in a Dunedin newspaper which may have elaborated on other family members/children/siblings etc.

i am in Oz, am hoping someon on their genealogical travels in an NZ library could have a squiz at the newspaper on the dates soon after for any death notice etc.
thanks in advance

New Zealand Completed Requests / Dunedin Schools lookup 1885-1900
« on: Friday 10 March 06 05:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I am trying to track my great-grandfather Bertie THOMPSON's family in Dunedin. Some time ago, SKS sent me images from High Street School, Dunedin - admission-progress-withdrawal register 1882-1920 for which I am very grateful. On the page they came from Albany St school and one child, Maude is listed as going to Kindergarten and coming back to re-enrol.

The family - father Robert (ejected by his sons for drinking and womanising sometime between 1892-1900), mother Annie, children Gilbert (Bertie) (b 1879), Harry (1881), Stanley (1884), Maude (1886). Family story goes there were 8 sons and 1 daughter and some may have been half-siblings but not sure if they were mother's or father's?

In 1884, the family was living in 8 Leith St Dunedin. By 1886, Robert Thompson was a saddler living in Stafford Avenue Dunedin.

The family moved to Melville St Dunedin at the beginning of 1892. Robert was possibly removed by Feb 1894.

In 1900, the Robert was living in Maclaggan street Dunedin (while Harry, Bertie and Annie were all at 39 Russell St), and 1902 he was listed at both 39 Russell street and Maclaggan St (from the 1900 & 1902 electoral rolls). Robert is not listed in the area in 1903 (Harry, Bertie and Annie are all at 39 Russell St). There is no record of the family in 1905-6, but they are living at 39 1/2 Russell street in 1908, with Stanley Thompson living in 39. Robert is not listed as a voter then (?died or more likely kicked out)

I am not sure how school registers are indexed

I am trying to find out the names of younger siblings so I can then trace birth records and see if any are half sibs or how they are related.

Antrim / christchurch NZ vs Christ Church, Belfast?
« on: Tuesday 10 January 06 23:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have a puzzle/brick wall,
my ancestors Robert THOMPSON and Annie ARCHER claimed to have married dec 20 or dec 27 1877 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, however there is absolutely no record of this. He was from Belfast, County Antrim.

I noticed there is a Christ Church in Belfast.

Coming from Left field - can anyone think of a reason someone may have stated they married in NZ rather than Ireland? All the kids were born in Dunedin, NZ.

If so, is there a marriage register of this church somewhere so to check the dates there?

Dear all,
everyone has been a great help - Ricky helped me with this on 1851:

Joseph Sykes head mar 71  maltster    Drighlington  Yorkshire
Sarah    "        wife    "    62                       "                 "
Samuel  "       son      S   20     "                 "
living at Drighlington
HO107/2303
folio 309
page 17

I'd be grateful if SKS could find him in 1841. He was living in Drighlington (possibly at the Fountain Inn, possibly next door) and may have sons William (b. late 1827), Henry (b. Jan 1826) and others.
thanks in advance,

New Zealand Completed Requests / NZ Newspaper lookup Wellington Feb 7 1859 ARCHER
« on: Monday 26 December 05 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, am tryin to unblock a 6 year brickwall (terrible mix of metaphors there but there you go) - I have an Annie ARCHER b. London ~1850 who I have been unable to find emigration records (or marriage in NZ). Trying to work the other way I noticed a Mr ARCHER and family arriving Wellington on the 7th February 1859 on the Kinnaird on this webpage:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Eourstuff/Kinnaird1859.htm

I figured there might be something about arriving passengers in the Wellington Independent on Feb 7 or 8 or thereabouts as I have noticed some social notices of arrivals in newspapers of other areas in NZ. (and Papers Past Website is missing 1859  :-[
