Scotland / Brick Wall - Marriage (1700s)
« on: Saturday 16 September 17 14:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello, all.

I've hit a bit of a brick wall in my family research: I have no idea who the wife of one of my many times great-grandfathers was.

It's not in the recorded family history, I can't find an entry on ScotlandsPeople, and tree information on Ancestry is incorrect.  There are a few people who shared his name (and have complete marriage records), but my own research has eliminated them from consideration.  I know who his wife wasn't, if that makes sense.

I know that he was a guild burgess of Edinburgh, and that one of his sons was baptized in Old St. Paul's in 1740.  And that's really all that I have to run with (there's no mention of his wife in the available burgess records).

At this point, I'm looking for advice on whether or not it would be a useful endeavour to hire someone to consult any additional records in Edinburgh (if there's anything relevant) that I can't access from where I live (I'm outside of the UK).

What's your $0.02?

Thanks!

Would anyone be able to help me find any additional information related to an Elizabeth Luke of Alverstoke?  From other sources, I have the following information:

Marriage - 29 December 1762 to a Lieutenant David Boswell of the 26th Company of Marines.  Her age is given as 19, his as 21; and

Burial - 12 September 1778 in Alverstoke.

In particular, I wonder if there's any chance that her and her husband's parents are named somewhere, and whether her place of burial within Alverstoke is identified.

Thank you!

Armed Forces / Royal Navy - 18th Century Casualty Lists
« on: Friday 20 January 17 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, all.

While researching a couple of my ancestors who served as Marines within the Royal Navy, I have come to believe that both were either killed or died of wounds related to any of a number of small fleet actions fought in the East Indies in 1782.

Does anybody know whether anything like a casualty list was published that long ago, or if such a report would be kept in government records?  I'm doubtful, but curious.

Thanks in advance!

Canada Lookup Request / Birth Registration - Thomas Newton Tyrell
« on: Monday 16 May 16 01:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello, all.

I am looking for some help in finding the birth registration of a Thomas Newton Tyrell, born in Ottawa in the 1890s.  I have found conflicting information to date, specifically:

1901 Census - gives birth date as March 29th, 1891, in Ottawa.

1910 Census - gives birth as March 1892, in Ottawa.

Marriage (1915) - gives his age as 22, suggesting that he was born in 1893.

Headstone - gives only a year of birth of 1893.

I have tried looking through Ancestry's data set for Ontario births for all three years without success.  I have noticed a lot of registrations made after the fact (in some cases, decades later).  Does anybody know of any missing portions of said record, or alternate sources that might be more successful?

Any help would be appreciated.

Europe / Huguenot Research - French Records
« on: Saturday 02 January 16 03:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, all.

Within the last year I have discovered that part of my family is of Huguenot stock, having fled France for England (by way of Ireland) in the mid-18th century.  Prior to the family that first immigrated to the UK, I have no information.

Browsing online has opened up a few research routes, including the Huguenot Society of Great Britain.  Prior to embarking upon research proper, I was curious as to whether anyone on the board has attempted to uncover their Huguenot roots within France, and if so how successful they might have been.

Cheers!

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Birth and/or Baptism - Susannah Radcliffe
« on: Friday 11 December 15 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
Good day.

I am trying to flesh out the family of my 5x great-grandmother, Susannah Radcliffe.  She was born in Wales, possibly Swansea or elsewhere in Glamorganshire, in 1807.  Her father was a James Radcliffe.  Beyond that, I have no information on her early years.  She later immigrated to Canada, married an settled in Ontario.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Cheers!

The Common Room / Resource Suggestions?
« on: Monday 07 July 14 02:09 BST (UK)  »
Good evening, all.

I have spent a good deal of time over the past year or so uncovering my paternal family history - specifically, my great-great grandfather, who brought the family to Canada in the late 1800s.  While his early years remain a bit shrouded in mystery, I have a theory that he was born under a phonetically similar yet different name to that which he used in his adult life.

The real challenge that I have had is confirming the names of his parents.  I have a copy of his marriage and death registrations, but have not been able to correlate the name that he gave as belonging to his father with any other record.  The name given as his mother's on the latter record is in fact his wife's, which I presume to be a clerical error.

Can anyone suggest some other type of record or resource that I should begin looking for?  Census results have turned up nothing that places my great-great grandfather and his dad in the same household.  Since I am searching in the 1846-1914 time period, I know that I should manage my expectations.

Any suggestions would be welcome.  Cheers!

England / Re-naming of Orphans
« on: Saturday 05 October 13 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello, all.

In the mid-1800s in Victorian England, how common would it have been for an orphan to be re-named while they lived in an orphanage?  If someone had a foreign-sounding (in this case, French) surname, was it likely that it would have been Anglicized?

I've tried looking for an answer myself but have not been able to find much on the subject.  As ever, any help is appreciated.

Cheers.

Census and Resource Discussion / FreeBMD Question
« on: Friday 20 September 13 19:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello, all.

I have recently learned that my gggrandfather was born on March 31st, 1847.  As such, would his birth have been recorded in the Jan-Mar or Apr-Jun quarter in the General Registrar's Office returns?  Furthermore, were entries made in the volumes sequentially by date of birth, or were they always registered by surname?

Thanks in advance.
