Argyllshire / Cameron/Fletcher, Morvern, Oban
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

I'm sorry if I have posted about this family on here before, but I couldn't find anything.

I'm hoping someone knows this family and/or can help me.

I have come to a complete standstill at my great-great grandfather John Cameron. According to census records he was born around 1852, Morvern, but I haven't found a record on this with the same parents that was named in the marriage record - Hugh Cameron and Anne Fletcher.

He is also listed as widower at his marriage record to Mary Mac Callum in 1880 in Oban. I haven't found any marriages that could be his from the years before 1880. So if someone should know something, or have some time on their hands, any info would be appreciated!

I have recently also heard rumors that there are some Spanish connections in this line somewhere.

This is what I have on John Cameron:

Born around 1852, Morvern, Oban to parents Hugh Cameron and Anne Fletcher.

He married Mary Mac Callum in 1880, Oban. They had 8 children. Around 1900 they moved to Inveroran Hotel and lived at and ran the hotel until around 1930. John seems to have left the family a little earlier. He died in 1928 in Oban.

So, the later part of his life isn't as much of a mystery as the earlier parts. If anyone knows anything, or can find something that I have overlooked, that would be much appreciated!

Stirlingshire / Lord McKinley Shaw
« on: Saturday 27 December 14 16:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have just recently found out that my great grandparents met while working for a Lord in the early 1920s. The name we've been given is McKinley Shaw (spelling might be totally different.)

Does anyone know of a family with these names in this area in the 1920s? He might have been a lord, but we are not sure. It must have been a big house, as my great grandmother worked in a kitchen, and my great grandfather worked as a chauffeur.

My great grandparents names were John Cameron (b. 1884) and Margaret Leishman Adam (b. 1899.)

Moray (Elginshire) / Catherine Gow/Gowie
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 17:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

I have this dead end in my family.. Quite far back, as she would be my ggggg-grandmother.

Her name is Catherine Gow/Gowie. The only certificate I have on her is her death certificate from 1857, Condorrat, Dumbartonshire. Her age is given as 80, so according to the certificate she should have been born around 1777. Parents unknown on certificate, so no help there.

In the 1841 census birthplace is only given as Scotland, but in the 1851 census she is recorded as born in Aldram, Morayshire around 1784.

Searching ScotlandsPeople I get one single hit on Catherine Gow between 1770-1800, and yes, she's born in 1784, but somewhere called Avoch, Ross and Cromarty? I'm Norwegian, so I have no idea if that is anywhere near Morayshire.

(On the certificate I can't seem to read the title/relation of the witness, but it could be someone other than family that has just given it a wild guess as to her age? I don't know.. I'll attach a screenshot of the witness part of the certificate if someone would like to try reading it.)

I found some other entries under Moray (Elginshire) mentioning the surname Gow, so if the surname originates there, the census may be correct?

Other info I have on her:

She had 10 children between 1804-1827 with James Boyd. All children born in Dumbartonshire.

(I haven't found a marriage certificate on them, but I assume they were married as they surely wouldn't have 10 children out of wedlock..?)

I feel like I have a million loose ends on this lady, but very few of the match up. I'm sorry about the total chaos of the post, but if someone would like to try and make any sense of it any help is much appreciated :) Maybe someone "knows" her for all I know!

Thanks,

Kine.

Requesting some help understanding some of the handwriting on this census record.

My interest in this record is a Mary Mac Callum (nine from the top), and what the information on her is.

Would also be great to know the name of the place they are living.

World War One / Help with identifying possible military uniform
« on: Wednesday 23 July 14 21:49 BST (UK)  »
I have recently come across a photo of my great grandfather wearing something I suppose might be a military uniform of some sort, because of the hat.

Does anybody know what kind of uniform this is? (I'm Norwegian, so Scottish military history isn't my strong suit ;)

And since he was born in 1884, I would guess it was WWI he would have been involved in? More or less.

Hi.

Is anyone able to read/understand where John died? (I can only read somewhere in Oban.)

And while you're on it - cause of death. Some sort of disease of the heart..

Thank you :)

Argyllshire / Buchanan family - Balnagown, Lismore, Argyll
« on: Friday 13 June 14 11:47 BST (UK)  »
OK, so now I'm really confused.

In my tree I have a couple - John Buchanan & Jean Connell. They had (as far as I have found) six children. In the census for 1841 I found a lot of people named Buchanan living at Balnagown. I found John & Jean in one record, and then I found one of their daughters in another Ancestry record with someone totally unknown. (Side note: the unknown ladys name is Jane Brummond, and her occupation is Strewster. What kind of occupation is that?) The rest of the children is yet to be identified in the 1841 census.

And then there are a lot of other Buchanans also living at Balnagown in 1841..

I'm guessing that this has to be siblings living with their families at the same place or something. Has anyone done any research on this name from Lismore that can tell me more?

Lanarkshire / Jessie Rae Boyd - b. 1850, Lanarkshire
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
I've been at a complete stop with one of my ancestors for several months now. I can't seem to find any solid information on either her or her parents. What I have on her:

Jessie Rae Boyd, born ca. 1850 in Leadhills, Lanark (according to the 1851 census.)

Her name could possibly also be Janet or Jane, I suppose..?

Married to Alexander Adam in 1873, Lanark. Her parents are given as John Boyd and Ann Rae (father deceased at the time of the wedding.) The marriage certificate also supports her birth as being in 1850.

I can't find anything on her parents, or her, before the wedding other than the 1851 census.

Argyllshire / Dugald MacCallum - who and where are you?
« on: Monday 09 December 13 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
OK - I'll try to sum this up the best I can based on the answers uncovered in my last post regarding the other half of this family:

I have previously posted in this forum asking for info on my great-grandmother Mary MacCallum (b. 1855, Lismore.) Since I couldn't for the life of me find any likely match for either her and her family in the censuses or a birth certificate with a pair of parents matching the information given on her marriage certificate, it was soon uncovered that she most likely is an illegitimate child. That also explained why her mother was listed as Catherine Campbell at her marriage, and Catherine Buchanan at her death. As soon as someone tipped me of a Mary Buchanan born in 1855 in Lismore, the pieces fell into place. I found the birth certificate - the right mother, but no father listed. So this couple of gg-grandparents seems to never have been married, and this is where the clues stops. I have managed to trace Catherine and her marriage to a Donald Campbell a couple of years later, as well as a sister that's living with Mary and her husband later (Catherine Campbell, b. 1866) so they are accounted for.

But... Mary's father is listed as Dugald MacCallum in both her marriage - and death certificate. There is no other info on him other than him being a shepherd. Since I haven't found Mary together with either of her parents in any census I feel like I don't know where to start looking for this person. What does one do when ancestors leaves so few leads?

Also - Mary uses MacCallum as surname later in life even though she is listed as Mary Buchanan at birth, so she must have had some sort of relationship with this Dugald? Or?
