Lancashire / Furniture Store-Stockport Road, Longsight, Manchester
« on: Tuesday 19 June 07 06:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to do some research into a couple of business which my grandfather, Godfrey Gould ran between 1895-1919. We think his first big shop was at 755-757 Stockport Road, Longsight around 1901, although I have a picture of his shop which says Longsight Furniture Store and today we have tried to locate the actual shop and have discovered its is actually at 645-647 Stockport Road which is located in Levenshulme.

Can anyone tell me if Stockport Road numbers have been changed since then and can you tell me if 755-757 is now 645-647

Also can anyone tell me how to locate any memorabilia, photgraphs or records dating back from my Grandfathers shop on Stockport Road?

I have also found him in the business directory for 1895 as Millinery at 19 Stockport Road and I wonder if anyone can clarify this.

Finally I am also trying to research an early business he had on Slade Lane. Please see second posting entitled Furniture Store-Slade Lane, Longsight

Many thanks

I am trying to do some research into my grandfathers, Godfey Gould's shop roughly between 1907-1919. The shop was located at 10-12 Slade Lane Longsight Manchester and is now being renovated. I am trying to clarify a few details and hoped someone maybe able to help me.

Firstly I want to know when the shop was built and whether it was built by my Grandfather’s brother William Gould.

Secondly I would like to know how many other business were run in this shop after he left in 1919.

Thirdly if anyone can locate any memorabilia, photographs or records relating to my Grandfathers shop. We think it was called Longsight Furniture Store.

Finally I am also trying to research an early business he had on Stockport Road. Please see second posting entitled Furniture Store-Stockport Road, Longsight

Many thanks

Cork / William Baldwin b Cork 1835
« on: Saturday 03 December 05 16:41 GMT (UK)  »
I am still researching my Baldwin’s from Cork and I am now trying to trace Henry Baldwin’s son descendants William who I think was my Gt Grandmothers brother.
William was born in Cork in 1836 and emigrated first to New Zealand and then to Australia. He was a captain in the Army and first joined the army in the 19th foot regiment. When the Indian Mutiny broke out he moved to the 85th Regiment. He married a Janet Buchanan. In 1873 he branched out into publishing and established the Otego Guardian, which he controlled until 1875. He died on 30th July 1917 in Perth Australia and we know he had a son called Godfrey Buchanan and a daughter called Fanny Emma who married Hon. Edmund William in 1883. Does any one know of any descendants please let me know.

Cork / BALDWINS FROM CORK
« on: Wednesday 02 November 05 09:02 GMT (UK)  »
This is another attempt to try and find my Baldwin’s and the right connection.

i HOPPING THIS MAY RING SOME BELLS IN SOMEONE’S FAMILY TREE.

I was looking for a Henry Baldwin from Cork who we thought was a Captain in the Army. His daughter was a Dorothy Baldwin B 1844/5 who married a Thomas Gould.

After lots and lots of research I have now uncovered some more information, which may help.

I have tracked down two sisters of Dorothy called Catherine and Mary who were born in 1857 & 1861 in Cork. They came over to England in 1881 to live near their sister Dorothy in Manchester, Chorlton on Medlock. ans where possibly living of the proceeds of a will.

Mary died in 1896 in Liverpool.

I think I have also found a 3rd Sister called Elizabeth ( b 1838 ) who again came over to Manchester in 1882 to marry a John Ilott. Thomas Gould and Catherine Baldwin witnessed the marriage. Her fathers name was also Henry Baldwin

Elizabeth & John emigrated to New Zealand.

This Elizabeth had a brother called William who was born in 1835 in Cork to a Henry Baldwin and Ellen Williams (illegitimate) This Henry is the son of William Baldwin of Lissarda Cork Ireland.

So if all these four (Dorothy, Elizabeth, Mary and Catherine and William are brother and sister then we have found the right father.

But the puzzle is that this particular Henry died in 1848 so couldn’t have fathered Mary and Catherine.

ANYONE GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS OR POSSIBLE LINKS I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW

Cork / The Baldwin's From Cork
« on: Saturday 23 July 05 10:26 BST (UK)  »
Anyone doing research on the Baldwin family from Cork I would like to hear from you. Despite there being a detailed family tree in Burkes Landed Gentry there are still many gaps and I as yet I can’t find my Henry Baldwin who was born aprox 1810-20 in Cork and who was a Captain in the Army. So the more of you out there that have any bits of information about the Baldwin’s can you let me know and maybe we can all expand our family trees further.
I have attached the Baldwin tree that i have so far. If you have anymore details that are not included please let me know and I will update the tree.

Cork / Regiment Serving in Cork 1840-1870
« on: Saturday 23 July 05 10:15 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying for some time to find details of my GG Grandfather who lived in Cork. He was a Captain in the Army and his name was Henry Baldwin. I have now found him in Griffiths Valuation living in Sunday's Well in 1851. I have been told that many officers who where posted at the local Barracks lived in Sundays well. Does anyone know which regiment was posted during 1840-1870 as this will help me find his service records.
Thanks :D
