Antrim / Mary Ann Clarke and John McKay
« on: Wednesday 24 January 24 01:23 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can please help?
I have Scottish and Irish DNA on my Dad's side. My Great Granddad, John Cowan, was born in Ayr. I have traced his Cowan roots but when researching his Mum's family, I have got stuck.
It's good that on the Scottish birth record of his Mum, Annie McKay, born 1874 in Wilson Street, Renfrew it gives the marriage of her parents, Mary Ann Clarke and John McKay. Married 16th May 1873 in Belfast.
When I looked for the certificate of their marriage, I was really excited! Yay! I've found my Irish roots!
Problem is, even having asked the people at St Anne's in Belfast, I can't get any further back than just names for Mary's parents and this was because they were on her death cert when she died in 1876. Mary Ann's mum is Francis, as was recorded. She has 3 surnames it seems. McKay Clarke and maiden surname was written as Beattie. Mary Ann's Dad is down as being John Clark. On Mary Ann's marriage he was a Clerk. On the death cert, he was a Police Clerk.

John McKay's  Dad on the marriage cert is down as John Mackay who's job is written as Blast Furnace.
It is estimated that Mary Ann was born 1854 and John McKay 1850...
On the marriage cert John is an engine fitter. On the death cert, a ship finisher.

I have no idea how to take them back further? I don't know for sure if they are actually Irish or if John and Mary Ann were just living in Belfast because of work? I have searched for Frances in both Scotland and Ireland but its all guess work. I have nothing on any of the others either.

Can someone please give me pointers? How will I know if they are Scottish or Irish? How do I search accurately for Francis if she has 3 names? Where is the best place to search for Irish info if they are Irish?

I would really appreciate some help please?

Thank you.

Buckinghamshire / Childe
« on: Monday 21 February 22 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
Can I please have some help?
David Childe of the Childeric linage and his wife Letitia are the parents of Jane, Ralph, Wolstone/Wulstan, Johane, Roger and Christopher. Much of this information is available in a book about those who founded America. Its online. However, From here descending, I have only seen accurate info of Wolstone's line.
Apparently, according to Family Search, I am descended on my Dad's side via Christopher's line.
Because of all the fake royal lines etc on the internet, I wanted to check these connections out for myself.
What I have thus far is:
Christopher is the Father of John Childe and John is the Father of Sarah Childe and she married Richard Littleboy, baptised 12 June 1610 Beaconsfield, Bucks.
I have seen Richard's will and it mentions his wife Sarah and is signed John Childe. Rebecca is the daughter of Richard and Sarah Littleboy. Rebecca married Henry Cocke/Cooke? and they had a daughter named Mary who married Thomas Ironmonger.
This is where the fun begins.
I know I'm here. So, If I am descended from these people then it has to be succesfull somehow, but I think that the people who have Thomas Poulton Ironmounger as Mary's husband have confused him with a simple Thomas Ironmonger. And I have just found a record on Family Search which gives
Mary's birth as 21 September 1700 but her death was 20 Nov 1701...How can she have married any of the Thomases?

Next generation down is Mary and Thomas are meant to have had a daughter named Elizabeth Ironmonger who married my Richard Alderman. Up to Richard Alderman and Elizabeth, I am 100% convinced that they are mine...but I am not able to piece together Mary and Thomas correctly.
According to Family search line, Mary was born 1702 and they have Thomas born 1702 in Wavendon....

Thank you so much.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ann Sharland
« on: Monday 15 November 21 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have an illegitimacy issue.
My 3rd Great Grandfather, James Bragg Quick/Quicke 7th March 1813, Stockleigh English, Devon. Is down on his baptism (if research is correct) as being illegitimate and his mother's name is Ann Quicke.
There is a document for marriage of Ann Sharland, bn, 3rd August 1774, to William Quick (Husbandman) of Shobrooke, in 1797 Shobrooke, Devon. Ann's father, it seems, is John Sharland, Blacksmith.
My DNA results tie me to the Sharland line, via Ann Sharland's sister's line, Elizabeth Sharland, through their mother Elizabeth Carrew bn 4 March 1746, Sandford, and their father, John Sharland bn 9th Oct 1744, Stockleigh English... and also the Quick line being 'Half' relations with the children of William Quick, James Bragg Quick's half brother.

My question is: How is James Bragg Quick illegitimate? Ann and William were married. All the children have the last name Quick. They must all be related through Ann?
Could it be possible that Ann had an affair during marriage maybe?
Could the DNA be wrong and Ann Sharland be a different person to Ann Quicke on James Bragg Quick's baptism?
Have I got something wrong here? Or Perhaps James Bragg is the name of James Bragg Quick's biological father?
Could someone help me check my research please?
Would really appreciate it.

Thank you for your help :)

Northamptonshire / Gulielmi/William Alderman and his wife Elizabeth.
« on: Sunday 25 April 21 18:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Could I please have some help and sources to back up that help, please?

I have seen on this post,
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=648930.0
on Elizabeth Gulielmi/William and husband Gulielmi/William Alderman.
I have a question...

The post says that Elizabeth was Baptised in Great Horwood, Bucks 1659...thing is the Bucks FHS have said that they don't have anything on William or his wife Elizabeth under Great Horwood before their children were born there. I can't even find record of her surname.

I have seen some have her as Elizabeth Freeman. And some Elizabeth Gulielmi. No sources to prove either.
I did see on the post that they had seen it was Great Harwood and not Great Horwood, but it was still assumed to be in Bucks.

Where did the confirmation of Elizabeth's surname and baptism come from?

I also have another issue. The supposed parents of William, that alot of trees on various sites have, are John Alderman 1637 Cranford St John and Dorothy Sargent 1631/2 Rothwell, Northamptonshire.
I cannot find any sources that say William has come from Rothwell to Great Horwood.
The same trees that have John and Dorothy as parents, have William as baptised in Great Horwood in 1659/60...if thats the case, William was already born and baptised before John and Dorothy were married in 1663 Rothwell.

John and Dorothy do have other children which were baptised in Rothwell, so why would William be the only one in Great Horwood? Esp as John and Dorothy stayed in Rothwell.

It's all a bit baffling. I think the family has become confused with another. I think John and Dorothy couldn't have been the only John and Dorothy because on their marriage record for 1663 it says that John is a Taylor. Seeing as they usually record the occupation when there is someone else of the same name in the same parish, its a big possibility that they have been confused. There was a son called William but it seems he was a different age and married someone else and stayed in Rothwell.

Please could someone help me make sense of all this?

I know that my Gulielmi/William Alderman and his wife Elizabeth were the ones living in Great Horwood when their children were baptised there because they are on the Swanbourne website...but there is not any confirmation of where William was before he was at Great Horwood. Apart from 'Probably from Northamptonshire'.

Thank you so much for your help :)

Family History Beginners Board / Adoption of Ada Rose Tadd...Who are her parents??
« on: Wednesday 16 October 13 13:32 BST (UK)  »
Please can I have some help?

I am searching my ex's family tree for his mum and my son. My ex's Gran was Ada Rose Tadd born in 1911, mother's maiden name is Tadd. As far as we know she was adopted. I have found electoral roll information on where she lived as an adult and her marriage info to spouse Emery, but how do I find her parents please? Is there an adoption register that I can search online? I am curious, that as her mother's maiden name is Tadd on her birth records, does this mean she was actually adopted? I thought when a baby is adopted that they are given a different name? Ada Rose Tadd was born in Birmingham but was living in London as an adult. Could this mean that she travelled to London to find her birth parents or was she sent to London with adoptive parents? Wouldn't they have changed her name? Please can someone help?

Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / Linking people in families together.
« on: Saturday 17 August 13 14:52 BST (UK)  »
I have been tracking my family back with documents, but have now come to a point in time with parish records. I have just received a copy of a baptism page which has the information I needed...Thomas Dancer is the son of Robert and Alice Dancer. Thomas was baptised in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire... I need to link Thomas Dancer with his son. I am of the opinion that James Dancer is Thomas Dancer's son, but James was born in Hertfordshire. Even if there is a copy in the parish records in St Stephens, Waterdale, Hertfordshire, that say that James Dancer was baptised there in 1802 and that his parents were Thomas and Mary Dancer...how do I know that it is thee Thomas Dancer who was baptised in Aylesbury? How does this link the two of them together? Should I be trying to find another document that links the two of them together? What reason did Thomas have to leave Buckinghamshire to begin his family in Hertfordshire? How do I know that it is the same Thomas Dancer?  Please help. Thank you for your time.
Gill.
