Roxburghshire / James Henderson Birth 1755ish, Help please
« on: Wednesday 15 April 15 15:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have gone back to researching my paternal line again and have managed to confirm the parents of my 3x Grt Grandfather, I am now trying to find out the DOB and POB of my 4x Grt Grandfather, his name is James Henderson born around 1755ish, this is currently assumed based on marriage date, I have his marriage to Janet Thomson as 27 June 1779 in Kelso, Roxburgh and have managed to confirm the names of 6 children (including 3xGG) all but one were born in Kelso. I have found four possibilities for his birth and was wondering if any one could advise on how is the best way to determine which is the right one. I searched on SP between 1745 and 1760 for any possible matches and this is what has come up.

James Henderson born 8 February 1747 in Cavers, fathers name Walter Henderson, no mothers name listed.
James Henderson born 28 June 1750 in Smailholm, parents are William Henderson and Margaret Tait.
James Henderson born 31 August 1755 in Oxnam, fathers name George Henderson, mothers name not listed.
James Henderson born 23 May 1760 in Kirkton father name listed as James Henderson, no mothers name listed.

I am inclined to rule out the 1747 and 1755 births as the fathers names Walter and George have not shown up anywhere in the line, and they seem to have stuck with family names through out the generations right up till my father was born, however all his names were family surnames. The other two births seem more possible as both the fathers names appear through out the generations, any advice on how to go about confirming or getting best possible match would be greatly appreciated .

Thank you in advance

Marie

World War Two / Query: WW2 Merchant Navy/Royal Navy Service man records
« on: Sunday 01 February 15 16:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

My Grandfather was in the Merchant Navy during WW2, I have a copy of his seaman pouch from TNA and have found that he was on loan to the Royal Navy under a T124x agreement, I have found that this means he was under the discipline of the Royal Navy but had the pay and terms of the Merchant Navy, my query is will the Royal Navy hold any service records for him and is it worth making a request to them, I would love to know what ships he served on as he was on at least one ship that was torpedoed, the only ship I do know he served on was Largs, however do not know if this was HMS Largs or SS Largs, any advice is greatly appreciated

Thank you in advance

United States of America / Looking for Annie Janet Thompson (nee Watt)
« on: Friday 21 March 14 22:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My Great Aunt Annie Janet Watt was born in Croydon, Surrey, England 19th March 1889, she emigrated to US and arrived in New York on the 27th August 1912.
She married Burton Samuel Thompson in Welland, Ontario, Canada on the 24th June 1916 (2nd wife), the went on to have 6 possibly 7 children:

(*)born abt 1913 (daughter of Burton and possible daughter or sept daughter to Annie Janet as born prior to marriage)
Nellie born abt 1918
Virginia J born abt 1920
Robert N born abt 1925
Kenneth L born abt 1926
(*) born abt 1930
Thelma F born abt 1930

I have found them in the 1920 census living in Rochester Ward 22, Monroe, New York and in the 1930 census living in Brighton, Monroe, New York. So far I have been unable to find them in the 1940's census but have found them in the US City Directory's for 1943 and 1944 living in Rochester, New York.

Annie died in Springwater, Livingston, New York in January 1977 aged 87 years.

Would any one be able to help me in locating them in the 1940's census or if any one is researching the people listed above it would be great to hear from you.

Many Thanks

Marie

Fermanagh / Help needed - Donnaghue/Small Family
« on: Thursday 27 February 14 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have just found that my 2x Gt Grandmothers family come from Fermanagh and was hoping that some one may be able to help locating the rest of the family.

My 2x Gt Grandmothers name was Mary Jane Small, born about 1850, she left Ireland between 1858-1861 with her mother and other siblings and move to Scotland. I have found them listed in the 1861 Scotland Census (under surname Smull), her father is not with them. Names listed below:

1861 Scotland Census:

Mary Small - age 40 - Head - Ireland
James Small- age 20 - Son - Ireland
Mary Jane Small - age 17 - Daughter - Ireland
William Small - age 9 - Son - Ireland
Ann Small - age 7 - Daughter - Ireland
Catherine Small - age 5 - Daughter - Ireland

Her mother Mary Small remarried in Scotland in 1864 to a Bright Miller, she is listed as a widow and her parents are Patrick Donnaghue (Deceased) and Ann Kelly.

I then found her mother with her new husband on the 1871 Scotland Census, this is were I found they were from Fermanagh.

Mary Jane Small married Hugh Gamble in 1868 and on this marriage record her father is listed as being Fleming Small, however on the death record of her younger sister Ann who died in 1865 the father is listed as being James Small.

I am registered with Rootsireland but so far have been unable to find a birth record for Mary Jane Small or any of her siblings or a marriage record for her parents Mary Donnaghue and James (fleming) Small, I have also looked for a birth record for Mary Donnaghue with no luck.

If any one is able to give me some help/advice on where I can look now I would be very grateful

Marie

Scotland / Gemmell Family from Scotland and Ireland
« on: Wednesday 26 June 13 14:10 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather Robert Gemmell was born in Scotland 18/11/1893, he married Jessie (Jeannie) Munro, born 4/8/1894, they were married 29/1/1915 in Partick, Scotland.

From the Marriage record Robert’s parents were Hugh Gemmell and Mary Jane Gemmell (Small), I located their marriage record and confirmed they were married in Partick 25/9/1868. I have located them on the Scottish census records from 1881 and this notes that Hugh Gemmell was born abt 1847/8 in Ireland and Mary Jane was born abt 1850 in Ireland, Hugh’s parents are noted as William Gemmell and Jane Cunningham (noted on marriage and death record for Hugh) and Mary Jane’s parents are noted as Fleming Small and Mary Donnegh or Donnachie (noted on both marriage and death record for Mary).

Hugh and Mary Jane Gemmell had about 10 children as follows:

William – Born abt 1870
Mary J – Born abt 1872
Susanna – Born abt 1875
Sarah – Born abt 1877
Agnes M – Born abt 1880
Elizabeth – Born abt 1884
Frederick – Born abt 1887
Albert – Born abt 1890
Robert (GGF) – Born 18/11/1893

I have looked on Scotlandspeople, ancestry and a couple of websites for Ireland and have been unable to locate any births/marriages for either set of parents. I am placing this on the notice bords for both Scotland and Ireland to see if there is any one researching the Gemmell Family name and recognizes any of the names listed above or could suggest any other websites that could be used to research and Irish connection.

Lanarkshire / Jeannie Munro of Lanarkshire *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 04 June 13 22:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My Great Grandmother Jeannie Munro was born abt 1893 and married Robert Gemmell 29/01/1915 in Partick, Lanarkshire, her parents are listed as Charles (i think) Munro and Jeanie McLeod. I can not find a birth record of Jeannie Munro or a marriage record for her parents, she died in 1967 in Glasgow and that is all we know as she never talked about her family.

If anyone recognises the name from their research and can help or point me in the direction to locate the information i need to continue this branch of my family tree it would be most appreciated.

Many Thanks
