The Lighter Side / Family tree software
« on: Thursday 15 December 16 00:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm thinking of hinting about some new Family Tree software as my Christmas pressie but, I have no clue which one to choose. My tree at the moment is mostly stored on-line at Ancestry and I'd like to be a bit more independent.
I've had Family Tree Maker in the past but, found it awkward and tricky to use which concerns me as many of the reviews I have Googled place it as one of the best
I want something where I can see branches of my tree clearly, maybe produce some nice print outs for family, store all the associated records for each individual, just make my life easier! I want to jump between websites and have everything I find in one place, Gedcom is great but it doesn't transfer everything.
Any ideas anyone or should I just write my own and make millions :-) (someone must have got there before me, surely).
Thanks

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ooooo, I just got an e-mail

...from ancestry telling me how my Dna is being analysed. Is this sign that it is nearly done or just to keep me going for another couple of weeks?
Can't wait much longer!!!!

Did anyone ever know or hear about anyone of the name Mundow? It is quite unusual and I am not having much luck finding out about the family.

Dublin / Grandad Kelly
« on: Monday 24 March 14 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
I'm making reasonable in-roads into my family tree in all directions but one. That is my Grandad Kelly's tree, I barely know anything at all about him or his family and was wondering if anybody here could maybe help.

His name was Matthew Kelly (1910-1976). My Dad remembers him having 2 brothers, Joseph and Patrick but, does not recall his parents names. They lived in South Dublin in what my Dad described as the Liberties. In his later years my Mum used to joke that he lived in the same Tenement block that Bono was brought up in but, I'm not sure how true that was ;-)

He married my Grandmother Mary Ann (Maureen) Donohoe  (1911-1970) in the late 1940s but when my Mum was born she was sent to Cavan to be looked after by cousins on my Grandmas side.

And that is it, all I know about him. I have searched and searched but, can't find a marriage certificate. I have found a couple of maybe census returns but nothing I can be sure of. As you can imagine, it's hard work searching a name like Matthew Kelly in Dublin!!!

If anybody thinks they maybe could help even the slightest I would be delighted :-)

Ireland / Irish Records
« on: Wednesday 12 March 14 00:50 GMT (UK)  »
Does anybody know if the records purchased on rootsireland.ie are the same as the ones you send off for. Wondering because if they are I might buy a few credits, if not, I won't bother.
Just trying to cut out the snail mail  ;D

The Lighter Side / Cool to be old in the 1800s?
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 16:41 GMT (UK)  »
Something I have noticed while researching my family tree is that, as we all know, dates need to be taken with a pinch of salt but, not only that. Where there are obvious errors they always seem to make the individual years older than other evidence would suggest.
At first I wondered if this was just peculiar to my close family but, as my research has widened I have noticed that it is almost across the board. Has anyone else noticed this or does anyone know of any articles about it. I did a google search but, didn't find anything :-)

Family History Beginners Board / Message boards
« on: Monday 20 January 14 18:57 GMT (UK)  »
Does anybody else find the message board on ansestry awkward to use or it just me?
If it's not just me, you would think a subscription site would make more of an effort to make their boards more user friendly. In it's present state it puts me off using (you only have to look at this site for evidence) what could be a useful resource.

Hi, I have just been reading a thread about correcting others mistakes on the Common room board.
It made me feel a bit guilty. My great grandfather had a very vague history. All the family know is that prior to moving to Longford, Ireland and marrying my G Grandma he was a soldier in the Irish Fuisiliers. Nobody knows where he was from originally, well apart from being Irish but the two dominant thoughts are Carlow or Antrim. I found a recruitment document, in his name with the right dates, which place him in Carlow but, I have absolutely no other evidence to verify this. I e-mailed it to my Uncle who is also researching the tree (it's not just my brick wall) but, was very much in the Carlow camp. He has now totally switched to my theory.
But my conviction is based entirely on instinct not facts :-(
The signature on the form is like a carbon copy of my Fathers (same name). When I showed it to my Dad he just stared at it in disbelief and said 'it's like I wrote it myself'.
Argh!
I feel bad because the rest of the family are convinced I am right but... I'm not!
I have told them of my doubts but, since I have nothing better for the moment at least, I have left it on my tree.
What I am asking is, is there ever room for instinct where facts are are hard to find?

Family History Beginners Board / Personalised trees.
« on: Monday 06 January 14 22:17 GMT (UK)  »
Sent a few 'research projects' over to the relatives in Ireland with my Dad who is visiting at the moment. Dad just rang to tell me they are all gone mad visiting graveyards all day.
I sent them all a family tree so far, personalised to themselves too and they love them  ;D
