Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cause of death? [solved, thank you!]
« on: Monday 04 January 21 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

The nature of my Great Grandfather's (John 'Jack' Blythman) death has always been a bit of a mystery in my family and I finally got around to ordering a copy of his death certificate recently. I've managed to decipher all but the actual cause of death. I know it happened 3 November 1941 at Britannia Steelworks, where he was a 'roof sheeter' in the Bridge Yard. I know it was reported by Edith Blythman, his widow, who was apparently 'in attendance' (my Nana -his daughter- told a different story). Can anyone help me with cause of death please? The family story was that it was a work accident but that it was blamed on something else, meaning that the family received no compensation and were from then on living in poverty. I can see something about his heart here, I think?

You can see the full image from the register here: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50798466373_3b5210fc96_o.jpg

And here is Jack and Edith Blythman:

Thank you!

Other Countries / Coghlans in Chile?
« on: Monday 05 November 18 12:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm currently searching through records that are new to me, and mostly not available via my full Ancestry membership. I'm looking at the Coghlans in Chile, from 1880s to present day (as well as links to Birmingham, Alabama much later on).

Details I have are:

Edward Stuart Coghlan (presume born Ireland, also lived in London, moved to Chile in 1880s).
m. Mary Chessman (whose family was English).

Their son was -> Martiniano Earl Harold Coghlan Chessman born 21 April 1902 in Santiago, Chile.
m. Olga Cerda born circa 1905 in Santiago (I think, struggling to find her).

Their son was -> Harold Cecil Coghlan Cerda, born 8 September 1931 in Santiago.

I'm trying to find more details of the Coghlans in Chile, as well as Edward Stuart before the move to Chile in the 1880s. I know Irish records around that time are pretty bad/non-existent  :(

Can anyone point me in the right direction for Chile records? I've found some via FamilySearch but now stuck and at the limit of my current knowledge/skills. I've also searched this forum and can't find anything relevant.

Thank you! :)

Lancashire / Stuck in a rut with Lancashire Gradwells! (mid 1700s)
« on: Wednesday 18 April 18 12:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm in a bit of a rut with one of my tree branches and wondered if anyone could offer any advice.

So far I'm using a standard Ancestry paid membership, and the lan-opc.org.uk website.

I'm tracing my Lancashire Gradwell line. The furthest -reliable- ancestor is James Gradwell, b~1777.

James Gradwell m. Mary (Kershaw) 3 June 1795, Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George.

James Gradwell was buried in February 1847 aged 70. The likely baptism record seems to be:

Baptism: 12 Oct 1777 St Peter, Blackley, Lancashire, England
James Gredwell - Son of William Gredwell
    Abode: Moston
    Occupation: Weaver

I come a bit unstuck at William Gredwell, though. Previously I thought that James' parents were:

Marriage: 1 Dec 1782 Collegiate, Manchester, Lancashire, England
William Gradwell - Silk Weaver, this Parish & Town of Manchr
Phebe Butterworth - (X), Widow, Manchr Aforesaid
    Register: Marriages 1782, Page 119, Entry 511

But that seems unlikely with James' birth year as 1777.....?

I wondered if anyone had any ideas about where to turn next? Might William be further afield do you think, prior to James' birth in 1777? (Not sure if this was likely in mid/late 1700s!)

Thanks in advance!

ETA - I have just discovered a previous thread with possible answers so consulting that now, apologies for any repetition here, a lot has happened since I last picked up the family tree!

Lancashire / Bluepits [Methodist?] Chapel, Castleton, Rochdale?
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm searching for a baptism record; I've found it via FamilySearch, but not via Ancestry or LOPC (presumably as it's a Methodist chapel).

Name:   Walter Clegg
Residence Place:   Lancashire, England
Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   17 Jul 1877
Christening Date (Original):   17 Jul 1877
Christening Place:   Bluepits Chapel, Rochdale, Lancaster, England
Father's Name:   Samuel Clegg
Mother's Name:   Elizabeth Clegg

I can't seem to find any info about the chapel itself though; where it was, whether it still exists, where the baptism records actually are.... I think I found something here that might mean the records are found in 'Touchstones Rochdale'? [https://link4life.org/images/pdfs/local-history-books/parish-register-9th-ed.pdf]

I searched the forums here and can only find reference to Bluepits as a place, rather than as a chapel. Has anyone ever come across it before?

Might it be this? http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Rochdale/Rochdale/unionst/index.html

Thanks :)

The Common Room / Birth certificate error/whoopsie
« on: Thursday 27 July 17 08:38 BST (UK)  »
Here's something I've never seen before.... There was a delay in dispatch, and the accompanying letter had a handwritten note to say it was a direct copy of the record, so I'm assuming this means "don't blame us!"

Is this sort of error common?

Lancashire / Baptism at age 22 for marriage?
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 12:01 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking into my great-great-grandfather, Matthew Gradwell.

He was born late 1847 in Newton Heath to Richard and Ellen Gradwell.

There is a baptism record, 31 July 1870, for Matthew Gradwell, son of Richard and Ellen Gradwell, in Newton Heath.

There is a record of Matthew's marriage to Alice Gillibrand in Newton Heath on 3 Sept 1870.

Is it possible/likely that Matthew was baptised as an adult in preparation for/advance of his wedding? I have no idea if this would have been the norm!

Thanks :)

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Burial of Matthew Gradwell, 1923?
« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 11:46 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down a burial record for my Great Great Grandfather, Matthew Gradwell. This is the civil record of the death:

Matthew Gradwell death registered Mar 1923 aged 75 Prestwich RD Volume: 8d Page: 425

I have searched burial records on http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

I also asked Bury council who said:

"Sorry but  I can no find no record of the burial of Matthew Gradwell in 1923.
We only keep the records for the council operated cemeteries. Each church keep their own graveyard records."

I've just moved to Prestwich and would love to track his grave down! Does anyone have any ideas where I can go next?

Thank you  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / SOLVED Thank you! - Mystery name on 1901 census
« on: Tuesday 28 February 17 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone figure out the 10th name down on this list of householders from the 1901 census?

Ancestry lists it as 'Trurcain', the census lists her as female.

Any ideas?

Thanks folks!
