Tyrone / Birth or migration records for Peter HOLLANDS/HOLLOND/HOLEN
« on: Monday 30 May 16 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am researching my family and have hit a snag in tracing Peter HOLLANDS, aka HOLLOND or HOLEN who had listed Co Tyrone as his birthplace on his son's birth certificate in New South Wales, Australia. I am unsure when he migrated to Australia, but he was 45 at the time of the birth in 1884 and married Harriet Rosina HARMER in NSW, Aust in 1883, making his birth abt 1839. I would greatly appreciate some assistance in tracing him as I have searched online resources that I have access to for Ireland, but have had no real luck. Many thanks to anyone who may be able to help.
Many thanks

Australia / Australian Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War
« on: Saturday 07 February 15 07:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am looking for information about Australians who volunteered in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). I believe my grandfather was a gun-runner during this time. I would like to know more about this, but records appear to be scarce. I have located a book written on the subject by Inglis, but don't have access to it and I am not sure what it contains anyway. I am wondering if anyone here has any information that they might be able to share about this? Many thanks in advance.

Tyrone / Holland/s Peter Lookup County Tyrone
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 06:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I have recently traced my family to County Tyrone, Ireland where it seems my gg g/father was born c.1838. His name was Peter Hollands, also spelt Holland or Holen. He travelled to Australia at some point and was married there in New South Wales in 1883. He also used the alias Thompson at one point. I can't seem to locate any information about him and the information I do have is only from his marriage certificate (no parental details listed) and son's birth certificate in 1884. I am in the process of contacting the parish of his marriage to see if they have any further information that may not have been transcribed. Any other information or assistance as to where i could begin to look would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance

Sussex Lookup Requests / HARMER/FULLER family Sussex
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 05:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I am just starting to research my family from Battle, Sussex. From what I can gather, my gg g/mother was Harriett Rosina Harmer/Fuller b:1863 and traveled to Australia on board the 'Lochee' ship from Plymouth in 1883. I don't yet have her birth certificate. I am unsure of her father until I manage to get her birth certificate, but given that she has taken her mother's maiden name that information might not be available. Her mother was Ellen Augusta Harmer, who then married John Fuller in 1883 and the family is listed in the 1871 census with her two children (and his stepchildren) James and Harriet. The information I have is that Ellen's parents were named Mary Turner and Robert Carey Harmer. I haven't been able to confirm any of this and just wondered if there is anyone who may have any information that may help. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Australia / George KEAN (KEANE) South Australia
« on: Monday 13 January 14 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone
My ggfather George Vincent Kean/Keane/Keen b: South Australia 29 Oct 1891, d:20 Aug 1974 he was married 17 Aug 1919 to Cecilia Alice Burke in Essex, London and divorced officially in 1942. He fathered my grandmother with another woman in the 1930s. He had 2 sisters, Elizabeth Stella Kean b: 24 Nov 1894, South Australia and Ethel Louisa Kean b: 5 March 1897 in South Australia, also an unknown birth b: & d: 5 Apr 1908 (and perhaps another brother, living at the time of his father's death). George fought in France in WW1, 32nd battalion, 1st AIF, but lied about his age to enlist for the war.
His parents are a bit of a mystery. His father, George Alexander Kean's birth was c. 1860, perhaps in Italy?, d: 15 Jun 1916 in Parkside Mental Hospital, Adelaide (father Thomas Kean). His mother Anne Bell b: c. 1869, location ?, father John Bell. They were married in South Australia 28 Jul 1892. A relative of mine has done quite a bit of research on this and this is as much as she was able to ascertain. She had some census records for George Alexander Kean showing him as a cab proprietor around Adelaide from 1890 to 1913, but prior to 1882 he was listed as a butcher.
I am very eager to find out some more about this family line and would appreciate any help.
Thank you

Australia / how to find divorce records 1942? please help
« on: Monday 13 January 14 03:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I have come across a record of a divorce in a newspaper on trove that tells of my great-grandfather's divorce from his first wife in 1942. I was always of the belief that he didn't divorce her, but lived with my great-grandmother as a 'friend/border' after the war until he died. We didn't in fact know he was related until only a few years ago, when blood typing showed that to be the case. Regardless I am now chasing the divorce records for him from his wife. Can anyone instruct me on how I might go about this? Would it be possible, or are these records sealed for a period just as births, deaths, etc.? Many thanks for any assistance.
