The Common Room / Convict - what does this mean?
« on: Sunday 24 January 10 18:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Attached is an entry on the convict transportation registers in 1825 for Thomas Atcheson who was sentenced to 14 years.  Can someone please tell me what this extra paragraph means?  None of the other entries on the page have a similar note

Thanks in advance

Derry (Londonderry) / Thomas Marshall Coleraine 1844ish
« on: Saturday 05 December 09 20:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I have been trying for a number of years to track down the birth of Thomas Marshall.  Census gives his place of bith as Coleraine in about 1844.  On his marriage cert his father is given as John.

Thanks to help from Aghadowey ( a little while ago now) I have ruled out the Thomas Marshall born in Macosquin.
See this thread:   http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,89084.0.html

Can anyone offer me any other potential Thomases?  It is just possible (though a bit of a leap of faith at this point) that I have him in Leeds in 1851 and, if so, his Mum is Margaret, but as I say this is just a vague possibility.

I have him on all censuses after that and I also have his marriage and death certs.

Fingers crossed x

Durham / Does anyone know where these places were?
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 20:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a family whose children were baptised in Tanfield Church between 1773 and 1778.  The residence given for different children as Kip Hill, Northorne and Tanlove.

I know Kip Hill is near Stanley but does anyone have any idea where the other two are or were?

I've tried googling  :(

Be glad of any ideas

Thanks

Durham / Anyone got knowledge of Claypath, Durham?
« on: Thursday 26 November 09 10:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have been doing some searching on the 1911 census for my Crampton family.  I have found Margaret with three of her unmarried children in 13 Claypath, Durham.  A further 2 of her children who are married also live at 13 Claypath with their familes.  They appear on separate sheets on the census so not all in the same 'household'.

My question is what kind of property would 13 Clapath have been?  On each separate census entry it states that the family has 3 rooms.  Does this mean that each family had three rooms in a large building?

I'd be glad of any suggestions

Thanks in advance

Lancashire / White Lund Munitions Factory - Morecambe
« on: Thursday 20 August 09 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if anyone knows of any records of deaths that occurred at the White Lund Munitions factory during WW1.

My Mum is a member of a local history group in County Durham and they are researching the people from the town who were killed in WW1.  One of those people was an Annie Bell and she was killed in a munitions factory.  They had assumed it was the munitions factory at Birtley but they have unnearthed something (not sure what) to say that she was actually working in Morecambe.

Mum has asked me if I can help find out if that is the case.  I have looked for a death record for the WW1 period in Lancaster and there doesn't seem to be one that would fit.  So I wondered if there might be a memorial to the factory workers.

Thanks for reading this I'll be glad of any advice on how to track Annie down

Completed Census Requests / COMPLETED 1911 census transcript - help please
« on: Monday 10 August 09 09:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have paid for and viewed the transcript page for George Ball b. 1861 living in Drighlington, North Bierly, Yorkshire.

In the occupation column for George it says "teamer for"

I'm guessing that there should be more to this.  Is there anyway I can find what it should say without having to now pay more to view the actual page?  There are a few mistakes on the page but this particular column seems to have a bit missing and I don't seem to be able to find a 'report errors' option.

Thanks for your help

The Common Room / Advice please - can I make a connection?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 15:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I'd like to pick your brains if I may.

I have a Thomas Marshall born abt 1844 in Ireland.  I have him first on board a vessel from Whitby in the 1861 census as an apprentice seaman.  On this census he gives his birthplace as Coleraine Ireland, on the 1871 he says he was born in Yorkshire but on all subsequent census he states Ireland.
On his marriage cert in 1867 Stranton Hartlepool he gives his father as John Marshall a weaver.

I have found, on the 1851 census, a Thomas born 1843 with parents John (a general porter) and Margaret in Leeds.  The whole family born in Ireland.

A broad census search on the 1861 for Thomas Marshall born Ireland 1844 +/- 2years only comes up with my Thomas on board the vessel Romp of Whitby.
I'd like to think that the Thomas in Leeds is mine but it seems a bit of a leap at the moment.

Can anyone give me any ideas on how to try and make a connection (or not) between the two.  I have tried looking for John and Margaret on the 1861 but with no luck.

I'd just appreciate some ideas please.

Thank you
Susan

Lancashire / Preston cemetery. Can anyone look for me please???
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 11:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have at last tracked down the death of my Great Grandmother (you have no idea how long this has taken  ::)  :-\ ) and a kind person at Preston Cemeteries department has provided me with the grave location.

Preston Cemetery Roman Catholic Section Grave No. GG568

I wondered if someone may be able to go and look to see if there is a headstone and note down the details or, if possible, take a photo. I would be ever so grateful

The lady in question is Elizabeth Marshall Parkinson and she died 14th March 1951.  There may also be a Walter Parkinson in the same plot.

Thank you

Susan
