Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Mother's maiden name?
« on: Monday 22 January 18 11:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could figure out the mother's maiden name in the attached snippet from a marriage certificate? Unfortunately, it is a pdf from the Registry and the pdf image was marked "Best Quality Image Damaged Page", so this is as good as its going to get.

The names I have are:
Thos Aherne
Ellen Newman
Jas McGrath
Mary ??????

Also, should know that the bride is from Tipperary in Ireland. (It's her mother's name I'm trying to read).

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks

Australia / Victoria BDM: Double birth/marriage registrations - which to order?
« on: Saturday 13 January 18 01:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm sorry if someone has already answered this but I'm not hitting the right combo of search keywords to find any answers.

I have a number of marriage and birth entries in the Victoria BDM that are duplicates but with different Event Registration Numbers. I don't know which one to order.

I notice that one registration number is always a high number and the other is always a low number. Also, they only seem to happen in the early years of registration.

Does anyone know whether they represent different types of records - for e.g. parish baptism vs civil birth registration - and therefore have different levels/types of information? Or would both have the same information and it doesn't matter which I order? I hesitate to order both as it gets very expensive very quickly. (i.e. $25.10 for each image)

For eg:

Marriage: Timothy AHERN to Ellen MULCAHY in 1842. There are two entries:
 - Event Registration Number: 286
 - Event Registration Number: 35495

Birth: Ellen AHEARN in 1845 (Parents: Timothy AHEARN and Ellen MULCAHY)
 - Birth Registration Number: 38742
Birth: Ellen AHERN in 1845 (Parents: Timothy AHERN and Ellen MULCAHY)
 - Event Registration Number: 902
[Note the different surname spellings]

Marriage: Lawrance BOURKE and Hannah MULCAHY in 1845
 - Event Registration Number: 201
Marriage: Laurence BOURKE and Hannah MULCAHY in 1845
 - Event Registration Number: 39941
[Note different spelling of groom's first name]

TIA

Hi,

I'm stuck on a couple of words in a will and it is driving me nuts. I've attached a snipped of two lines so you can see the handwriting.

The two lines basically read as:
Line 1: Isaac Lee Esquire a Gold Watch I also leave to the said Henry
Line 2: Isaac Lee Esq and Frederick Ellis Esq a [unreadable] [unreadable] [unreadable] I leave

You've got to love the way they take out all punctuation. And, by the way, that name really is "Frederick".

It is very possible that the first letter of the first unreadable word is "M" as unlikely as that sounds. It matches the "M" in his daughter's name, Maria, mentioned earlier in the will.

Apart from that, I'm completely stumped.  ::)  Any guesses anyone? All gratefully received!  :)

Thank you!

Hi,

I have a handwriting problem with an entry in the 1841 England Census for Alice Brand.

In the "whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts" column, I think the census taker has written "in [or 'on'] Continent".

I have attached a snippet. Does this look right to you? I would really appreciate a second opinion.  :)

Thanks!

Hi,

I really need some help on this one!   :-\

I have a couple who are living in the household of my 3 x great grandparents. I suspect the wife of this couple may be a sister to my 3 x great grandmother but I cannot for the life of me read their surname! FindMyPast and Ancestry have transcribed it completely differently to each other, but if it is what I think it should be, then it would be a whole other surname again.  ???

The head of household is Richard Diggle and his wife is Nanny Diggle. They are in Bury, Lancashire. The mystery couple are David and Nancy [??]. According to the entry, David is apparently in the army but I don't have enough information to track down any military records.

I didn't want to give the three possible names straight away as I don't want to prejudice people's first impressions.

Any suggestions gratefully received!!  :)

Thanks

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice regarding the date of this photograph? I think it is sometime in the 1920s or 1930s but I don't know anything about dating photos.

Based on some other photos I have, I believe that the photo may have been taken in Longreach, Queensland, Australia. The photo appears to be signed "W. T. Baldeaves" but I couldn't find anything, anywhere about this photographer.

The photo itself is 3 3/4 inches x 5 3/4 inches in size and is loosely mounted in a photograph folder. That is, the photo is not glued in but held in place by corners. The photograph folder has an embossed decorative decal on the front. I've included a copy of the photograph and the front of the photograph folder.

I do not know who the family are, though I suspect they were friends of my great-grandmother. I'm currently following a trail on who they might be but it is pretty slim. I'm hoping a dating of the photograph will help me cut down on the options.

All in all, it is a bit of mystery for me!

Thank you!

I just received the latest The National Archives newsletter and it mentions a FindMyPast 1 month World subscription for £1:

Quote
"Later this year Findmypast - in association with The National Archives - is publishing the 1939 Register for the first time. This register bridges the gap in Census records caused by the Second World War.

While work is underway to bring online access to the Register, Findmypast are offering our readers a one month World subscription for just £1 (usual price £12.95). Visit Findmypast and quote code '1939TNA'. Terms and conditions apply. "

There is no information about how long this discount will last.

Usual caveats about making sure you untick the automatic resubscribe option in your profile.

I don't know if there are any rules on this, but I'm trying to get an idea of what experiences people have had with various DNA testing companies.

I would like to get a number of my family members tested but am confused over who to go with. Initially, I wish to do all three tests for my father and the autosomal and mtDNA for my mother though I suppose I could just get one test each and then pay for upgrades later.

I am in Australia and I believe that this may mean limited options regarding companies.

My first option was FTDNA but looking over the posts on their Facebook page, it seems that some people have lately been having some pretty bad customer experiences. This is rather worrying considering the amount of money I would be spending.

With that in mind, which companies have people had good (recent) experiences with and would recommend, considering my location and the tests I would like to get done?

Any advice would be welcome.

TIA

The Common Room / Congress 2015 - Anyone been to previous conferences?
« on: Saturday 09 August 14 23:39 BST (UK)  »

Hi,

I've been thinking of going to Congress 2015 (The 14th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry 26-30 March 2015) next year in Canberra and buying an early bird ticket but I haven't been to one before.

Has anyone ever been to any previous conferences? Was it worthwhile? The lectures look very interesting but it is a lot to pay and I'll have to take some time off work so want to be sure it is worth it.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, here's the link: http://www.congress2015.org.au and it is basically run by The Heraldry & Genealogy Society of Canberra.

Thanks
