I've got to a stage where I can go no further without making broad assumptions - and I'm not going to rely on that.
OPRs in Traquair (Scottish borders) started in 1694. My great.... grandfather Alexander Brunton was married in 1716 to Janet Bell in Traquair and lived at the Riggs.
The Brunton name can be found in written works about Traquair (court records/books/Traquair House records) in the 1600s and a lot of births/marriages/deaths can be found between 1694 and 1720s, including numerous Bruntons in different hamlets within Traquair Parish (Grieston, Kalzie etc). Gravestones are also in the kirkyard.
However, this doesn't mean Alexander Brunton was born in Traquair.
I can find NO definitive proof as to the father of Alexander Brunton, or even his profession. His sons were tailors, but the only Alexander Brunton I can find in records with a profession was a wright (this strangely fits in with 1870s family legend)
Simple question, where do I can from here. Using Scottish naming conventions I can hazard a guess, but I'm not going to rely on something I can neither prove or disprove.
(guess - John Brunton (1650 to 22 May 1736) was the father/Christian Horsburgh (1658 to 08 July 1704) the mother, Janet Bells father was David Bell (died Feb. 1691), a tailor - all very neat, but NO proof so assumed wrong)
