Montgomeryshire / Montgomery Births and possible patronymic names use
« on: Saturday 24 February 24 10:04 GMT (UK)  »
David Evans:
The 1841 census for Gulval in Cornwall, England shows my ancestor, David Evans, aged 60 (possible birth date 1781) whether born in same county marked N , whether born in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts, there is a W.  I believe this to be Wales.
During my research on David I could establish at the time of his first marriage in Cornwall in 1800 he was a soldier with the Merionethshire Militia, further adding to the probability that he was born in Wales. The only other census I have is 1851, showing him as 73 (possible birth date of 1778) born Yarmouth, Norfolk.  He died in St Erth, Cornwall in 1855 and a copy of his death certificate shows his age at 78 (possible birth 1778)
Despite doing lots of checking and reading, I am not sure how I can establish David’s parents names correctly, but I took a punt that if I was dealing with patronymic names, then his parents may be Evan and Elisabeth.  His children’s names in birth order born in Cornwall -  Elisabeth, Mary, Evan Roberts, Joseph Barnes (Barnes is wife’s surname), David Lloyd, David, Thomas, and another Elizabeth.
Using 1776 give or take 10 years at Find My Past (Family Search) and Wales (no county), I located only 2 Welsh births with first names of Evan and Elizabeth, one with last name as Evans or David (1781) and  one with last name Jones or Evans (1782), both in Montgomeryshire.
Looking for any ideas or assistance that may give me a breakthrough. Apologies for the lengthy post, but needed to give enough for possible helpers to understand.

Cornwall / Occupations in the 1841 Census
« on: Thursday 22 February 24 10:19 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1841 census my ancestor, David Evans occupation is shown as "Racker".  There are a few males with this occupation.  Can anyone give me an idea of what this was.
In the 1851 census, he is listed as a farmer.
Appreciate any insights.

Limerick / Michael Leahy - Limerick
« on: Monday 21 June 21 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My GGGrandfather, Michael Leahy was supposedly from Kilbarron (from military records) around 1840 but I have been unable to establish or confirm his birth and parentage.

From his military records when serving with the 2nd Battalion, 14th Buckingham Register of Foot,   I know he enlisted in Ireland when the regiment was stationed in or around Queenstown, Cork but year is unknown.  He sailed from Cork, Ireland with the regiment in September 1860 for New Zealand and fought in the New Zealand Maori Wars.  After this service, in 1866 he was sent to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia with his regiment. He deserted the army in Tasmania December 1869 and married Sarah Elizabeth Innis in 1870 under the name Lahey.  He died in Tasmania under the name Lahey in 1917.  There are numerous spellings of surnames within the family in Australia records.
Would appreciate if anyone can help me piece together his early life with such limited info.  Thanks

Hi,
Looking for any information on the following convict.
George Westley born in Sawley Derbyshire to Benjamin and Ann Westley in 1829.
George was convicted with his brother John.  Did time at Pentonville Prison.  Hawker and Shoemaker. On the Thomas Arbuthnot for Port Phillip arriving on 4th May 1847.

From there he seems to just disappear.  I have searched everything I can think of to get a lead on his life in Australia but nothing.  His brother John  ended up in Tasmania but I cannot find George.

Does anyone have any ideas where to search next?

Clare / Catherine O'Keefe
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 06:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Looking for a Catherine O'Keefe.  Limited information I have indicates she was born c 1828 in Clare, Ireland.  Was RC and could read but not write. No parent or sibling info.
Departed Southampton on the Mooltan for Australia in 1854 as a general servant as part of the "Immigrants under the Indenture Scheme".  She went on to marry in Australia and had about 14 children with John Wesley.

Appreciate any pointers or help in how to find a needle in a haystack.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / WESLEY family around Sawley 1810-1850
« on: Wednesday 16 January 19 01:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Lookinf for some help with births and deaths for children of Benjamin WESLEY of Leicester and Ann Willmott of Attenborough, Nottinghamshire, married in Sawley, Derbyshire in 1809. Likely children’s names Samuel, Benjamin, George and John or Jonathan.  A John WESTLEY from Sawley was sent to Van Diemans Land as a convict in 1845, aged 15 and I am trying to trace siblings. Believe Benjamin and Ann were in St Peters Lane in Leicester in the 1851 and 1861 census,
Appreciate any assistance

Angus (Forfarshire) / Charles ROBB and family - Dundee 1800-1870
« on: Saturday 31 December 16 11:56 GMT (UK)  »
Searching for the family of Mary Ann Robb  b: 1820 (perhaps France or Scotland) d: 1844 Tasmania
What I have:  In 1835 Charles is identified as the father of Mary Ann Robb, a porter, of Overgate Dundee (trial record of Mary Ann) In trial record of Susan Robb in 1839 he is shown as a porter of Whitehall Close, Dundee.  Both Mary Ann and Susan were transported to Australia. Susan was pregnant. Susan left Australia for America c 1854 after her marriage.
Heresay says they were born in France??? and their mother was Elizabeth and they fled France during the French wars..  Any ideas on how to confirm this?
Maryann B:  20/02/1820
Susan B:  Abt 1823
Jessie?? B: abt 1826 – in Dumfries

In April 1838 Susan and her sister Margaret appear before a magistrate at Dundee for stealing plus at least once more before Susan was transported in 1839.
Maryann named her three children born in Tasmania – Jessie, Elizabeth & Maryann.

Conjecture on my part – Could this be Maryann’s family?:
Several births with Father Charles and Mother Elizabeth [Dalling] in Dumfries, Scotland.
Elizabeth Robb  Ch: 3/1/1822
Margaret Robb ch 10/3/1826
John Robb  B: 4/4/1828  Bp 9/4/1828 D: 08/03/1839
John Robb B: 10/10/1830
Elizabeth Robb  Ch: 3/1/1822
Margaret Robb ch 10/3/1826
Charles Robb Abt 1833
Tried the 1841 census but I don’t have enough information to ascertain whether they are same family.

Any pointers or assistance appreciated

Antrim / ANTRIM - Edward Tipping
« on: Monday 28 November 16 23:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Looking for some guidance on how to find more detail on Edward Tipping, most likely from Antrim who married a Catherine (perhaps Cain, Cann, McCane) and had one child. Edward died in East Indies in 1843 and Catherine Tipping was convicted in 1847 and transported to Australia as a convict in 1848.
This information comes from the convict records held in Australia.  Anyone know how to find deaths in East Indies?   Have attached a small cutout of the details if anyone is good at deciphering.  H: husband M: mother S:sisters.  Any assistance appreciated...
