Calling on any possible descendant of William & Mary for information I don't have. They were married in Carisbrook Vic in 1860.  I am a descendant through their son Isaiah Alfred.  On the Davis side I have Isaiah's marr cert and William's marr cert which states that his father John was a fruiterer and mother's name was Elizabeth Hughes.  Possible match for William with John Davis (occ showing greengrocer), Elizabeth Davis on an 1841 census in Cheltenham with siblings John and Mary.  Here I have hit a stumbling block as can't find anything further back.  In fact I can't find any shipping records for William and don't know if he came to Aus by himself or with family???  His death cert says he arrived in Vic in 1855 at the age of 17 and was occ as postal official in Ballarat.  Have found the odd newspaper article for his death and for eldest daughter Bessie's marriage to Archelaus Ball.

On the Andrews side there are shipping records for Mary Ann coming to Aus with her parents James and Sarah in 1858.  I have found family search records for her siblings (William, Isaiah, James, Jane,John Baker) born in Newton Ferrers Devon and possible marriage between her parents James Andrews and Sarah Baker in 1821.  Also probable match with marriage in 1788 of Sarah Baker's parents (Sarah Bowen and John Baker) and subsequent births of Sarah's siblings in Newton Ferrers of John Bowen,Sarah,Mary Anne,Diana,Elizabeth,Caroline,Jane).  Probable matches as there appears to be use of Bowen as middle name in child born in Aus, also christian names as well.  I also have census records for 1851 of James and Sarah Andrews and children living in Cawsand prior to coming to Aus.  I have Sarah Andrews death cert but there appears to be mistakes about her parents on it when compared to her daughters death cert.

Having laid out all that info there are lots of gaps if any other descendants have details to fill in.  Would love to know what happened to James Andrews (farmer)after he came to Aus, and I don't have much info on his Andrews side.  Would love to know more about William Davis and how he became a postal official back in those early days and again would love to know more about his circumstances in coming to Aus and with whom and his background.

Sorry to be so long winded but didn't want to waste anyone's time with doubling up on info, anything new will be greatly appreciated.

Regards Coralie

Australia / Bruces from Maldon Victoria
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 03:23 BST (UK)  »
Seeking info on the Bruces from Maldon Victoria.  I am descendant of William Bruce b 1793 London who married Rebecca Bradshaw b Cerkenwall London.  Both William and his son William Frederick were Masters of Workhouses in London and migrated to Australia.  William Frederick first in 1852 with wife Emily Anne (Lord) and later on his parents.

I have hit a stumbling block with the Bruces.  I know William's father was a silversmith as per his death cert. and found a will of a William Bruce Silversmith of Chelsea, Middlesex dated 1813 which is hard to read and doesn't give a lot of details but could be a match.

Any info about William Bruce the silversmith or indeed any info on the Bruces lives after they immigrated to Maldon would be great to know.  I do know via 1856 electoral roll that W F Bruce was involved with the British and American Hotel Maldon somehow.

Also any info on Emily's Lord ancestors would be great too if any of her descendants have info.  I have found a good match in 1841 census with Emily living with her family father Joseph (grocer) mother Esther (possibly 2nd wife of Jos and Em's step mum) in Gravesend.  Note Emily's death cert says father was shipping agent????

Thanks Coralie
