World War Two / John Wilson Cook
« on: Saturday 02 November 19 05:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am hoping someone can help with the interpretation of enlistment records for the above man.

John Wilson Cook enlisted with the (Royal) Tank Corps in 1927 and was discharged at the end of th e period h e signed up for. He was a Private. He then re enlisted 30 Oct 1939. The record on FindMyPast says (I think) he was discharged 11 April 1941 - “Dis to comm” -? 390/XVIII/KR1940. I am guessing the latter refers to a regulation? King’s Regulation? But how do I find out what it says?

I was wondering whether he had been wounded, or got sick. I am not sure if he survived, as there are a lot of John W Cooks around.

Many thanks for any help.

Lancashire / Cotton Town website
« on: Wednesday 24 April 19 22:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have been trying to access the website www.cottontown.org - have tried three different browsers and two different devices. Have never visited this site before so can't be old codes tripping me up.  Any suggestions?

I am interested in the descendants of Thomas & Alice Askew who lived in Lower Darwen, Upper Darwen and Blackburn from the 1840s.

I have assumed Upper Darwen became just Darwen - is that correct?

Many thanks for any help.

London and Middlesex / Buckingham Place

Hello

Could someone help locate Buckingham Place in London? It is the address given on an 1842 birth cert. Father was in the Horse Guards, so it may be near Buckingham Palace.

Thanks for any help.

Westmorland / Kirkby Lonsdale
« on: Friday 08 March 19 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I have just found a family line linked to Westmorland and Lancashire. Grateful for advice on best online sources for parish and non con records for Westmorland (am starting at Kirkby Lonsdale but these may lead me elsewhere), in particular images of the actual records, or at the very least full transcriptions. Have purchased some records from the Cumbria FHS for Kirkby Lonsdale but these only go to 1812  - Are any later ones available? FreeReg does not seem to have coverage though I am finding that site harder and harder to use.

I have had a look at the resources board and but the link for the online parish clerk seems broken and I can’t find a new one.

Grateful for any help.

Hello

The following site has some very sad stories of girls who spent time at St Joseph's. A couple of these refer to some of the girls being encouraged to become domestic servants in other convents or institutions run by St Joseph's. Does anyone have an idea where in the country some of these other institutions linked with the Darlington St Joseph's might be and what they were called?

I am aware of the following but they don't help me with my query:

Hello

A member of my extended family was admitted to the above in 1905, following the death of her parents. Her elder sister was also admitted, and later discharged aged 18.  Both girls are there in the 1911 census. The elder sister returns to her place of birth (South Shields) and has a life which can be traced in parts at least.

The records which another researcher has accessed do not give a discharge date for the younger girl.

Angus (Forfarshire) / William SOUTER
« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 08:25 BST (UK)  »
In case anyone is looking for him, there is a newspaper article in the Carlisle Journal, 15 November 1845 (but taken from the Newcastle Courant) which says that the steam ferry was crossing the river from North Shields [i.e. the Tyne] when it ran down a boat containing 5 men. Four were saved, but the fifth was William Souter aged 22 of Arbroath. The article says the body had not been found. The accident occurred on "Thursday morning week".

This is an off shoot of the following thread:

Do you know when William emigrated to South Africa? I can't see him very readily in the 1891 census. Looks as if he & his father were already working on railways before he emigrated.
