Ireland / Convent records in Ireland
« on: Thursday 18 August 22 22:19 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for records relating to someone born in a convent in Ireland probably between 1920 and 1930. The information I have is limited I'm afraid, I don't know where in Ireland but they were not taken away from their mother so I wondered if the convent was more of a hospital rather than somewhere unwed mothers went then had their babies taken away.
I realise this is vague but I just need pointed in the general direction.

Europe / Possible name change: Anglicised Polish name?
« on: Monday 24 January 22 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for help in tracing a couple who came from Poland possibly just after the First World War. Joseph and Elizabeth Sophie Mendrys. Their first official document I have found them recorded on is the 1939 Register living in Middlesex, London where their name is spelt Mindrey but it seems to have alternated between Mendrys, Mindrey, Mendreys and so on. We know they came from Poland and Joseph may have come from Prussia originally but its not certain and no-one seems to know when they came over. I've looked through Immigration, passenger and ships records but no luck.
Could they have travelled under their Polish spelling then possibly Anglicised it later??

We know much about their life in England but nothing about their life before.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Laurie

The Common Room / Ardeer Foundry mystery
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 21:20 GMT (UK)  »
Im researching George Macgregor born in Thornliebank, Glasgow. (1836-?) and have been told of the family story that he owned the Ardeer Foundry but cannot find any record of this. Im assuming it is a foundry in Ardeer, Motherwell. His brother Gregor, who I cannot find any record of, supposedly had a soup factory.

Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Thanks in advance,
Laurie

Cumberland / Young Family: Cumberland/Wigton
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
So I have a conundrum.
I'm researching William Young (1840 approx) born in Wigton, Cumberland.
Father of George Young (14/9/1880-20/12/1951).
I thought he was married twice but I think the wives maybe the same person. Margaret Starkey (1842 approx born in Ireland) and Isabella (1842 approx born in Ireland). I think her name was Margaret Isabella Starkey but interchanged her name between census records. The records of the children make more sense by combining the two women but is their anyway of confirming my conclusion? I'm going round in circles!

The Common Room / Still recorded as illegitimate at death
« on: Monday 22 March 21 18:17 GMT (UK)  »
I've just discovered (finally!) my 3rd great grandfathers death certificate of 1873. Even at 71 years of age he is still recorded as 'illegitimate'! In the space for his occupation it is recorded as "mason (illiegitimate) married to Mary Johnstone." Plus his Fathers name is missing and only his Mothers name is recorded.
So either he was an illegitimate mason??? or the stigma of being illegitimate was that strong.

Any clarification of this type of recording is very welcome.

Stirlingshire / Polmaise Castle, Stirling
« on: Monday 22 February 21 17:46 GMT (UK)  »
I've just discovered my great-granduncle was a Butler at Polmaise Castle in 1927 at the time of his death. I've never heard of this castle but understand it has since been demolished by the army. Does anyone know about the family who owned it or anyone else who worked there? My great granduncle was from Inverness, then in the Royal Army Medical Corps serving in Egypt during WW1 so not sure how he ended up a butler in Stirling!

Thanks,
Laurie

Radnorshire / Origin of the name De Winton in Radnorshire
« on: Monday 11 January 21 17:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently discovered a family member with the name Price Meredith De Winton Evans (1903-1957) and was curious as to where the 'De Winton' originated. I have gone back several generations on both sides of the family but have yet to find any other De Winton. All his siblings had unusual names so maybe they were just history buffs of the Norman conquest??

Grateful for any info,
Laurie

The Common Room / Using Find My Past website
« on: Wednesday 04 November 20 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
Ive started using Find My Past recently but find it quite frustrating. Im struggling to find records that I can easily find on ScotlandsPeople and even Ancestry. Has anyone else found any difficulties with it? Ive been researching for years and have never had a problem such as these with other sites. (ScotlandsPeople, Ancestry, Forces War Records, MyHeritage)
