The Common Room / Interpreting "of this parish"
« on: Wednesday 17 December 08 23:16 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone give me some advice?  I have copies of parish records for marriages of ancestors where both parties are described as "of this parish".  No names given for fathers so I am looking in same parish records for baptisms around 20+ years before the marriage without success.  What I want to know is does "of this parish" mean literally born in the same parish or can you become "of this parish" by some other means.

Cheshire / Altrincham in 1841
« on: Thursday 07 February 08 23:03 GMT (UK)  »
In 1841 Census my ancestor  Joseph Street was living next to the lock ups and police station in Altrincham - does anyone know what street this might have been?

why am I asking???
On Cheshire Records office web page they have on-line access to tithe maps. If you have cheshire ancstors it is well worth a look

http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps

In the tithe map of 1838 a Joseph Street is renting 9 cottages (30 perches no less) in Altrincham.  When I check the map this building (it seems to be one building in spite of being described as 9 cottages) appears to be on George Street.

I am wondering if this Joseph Street is my ancestor and wondering if these were premises he lived at or perhaps rented for work purposes.  He was a tailor.  If the police station turned out to be in George Street I'd be  ;D

Anyone out there help?

I have just got a new computer :D (xmas present so not allowed to set it up yet)  Equipped with VISTA.

I have family tree maker 2005 and British Isles Vital Records Index and am concerned that these won't be compatible with VISTA. Have tried to email product support for both but received no replies.

anyone out there had any experience with VISTA and these products?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Lancashire / Oldham, Prestwich, Salford, Altrincham 1832
« on: Wednesday 21 November 07 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
Am I barking up the wrong family tree?

My 3 x gt grandparents were Joseph Street and Frances Brown

Joseph was apparently born in Rostherne (nr Altrincham. )
1841 census of Altrincham has him with two children and marked as Y in the of the county column that would be Cheshire,
1851 says he was born Rostherne which is also Cheshire.

1841 Wife Frances was with others of the children visiting her married sister Mary Strehorn in 66 Cumberland Street Manchester - she has a y in the of the county column as does her eldest child Henry but the younger ones have N. There appears to be another sister visiting/living there - Elizabeth Brown also of this county.

1851 - has the whole Street family together at the same address as 1841 in Altrincham. Here it says Frances born in Salford, as also Henry. Apart from the father Joseph, (born Rostherne) the others were born in Bowdon Cheshire (nr Altrincham again)

I looked up on familysearch.org and found a potential marriage for Joseph and Frances and have obtained a copy of the Parish record, details below:

St Mary’s Church Prestwich
Joseph Street and Frances Brown of Oldham were married in this church by banns this 7th day of August in the year 1831.

Joseph signed his name, Frances put her mark.  The witnesses are the same on the certificate before and after so I assume they were just church officials

If Frances was born in Salford and Joseph in Rostherne - why would they marry in Prestwich? and the copy marriage entry says "of Oldham"

The date of the marriage is about right - first child Henry (Charles Henry?) was born in 1832

Anyone willing to express an opinion?  Is it the right marriage or by some weird coincidence was there another Joseph Street marrying another Frances Brown.  The distances involved seem rather a lot for those days (but I am not an expert on areas of Greater Manchester)

Lancashire / Liverpool/Dawson's Place, Dawsons Court Lawton Street and Cropper Street
« on: Sunday 18 November 07 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anyone out there with an expert knowledge of old Liverpool streets?

In 1839 Edward Potter was born to John Potter and his wife Elizabeth.  Birth certificate says Edward was born in Dawon's Place, the informant was his mother Elizabeth whose residence is described as Cropper Street.

Three months later, Edward died at Dawson's Place; the informant was his mother whose residence is described as Lawton Street.

On 1841 census the whole family, (ie John, Elizabeth and five of their surviving ae living at Dawons' Court, Lawton Street.

Are Dawson's court and Dawson's place one and the same?

Why the difference between how mother's residence is described and how Edward's is described on birth and death certs (same registrar)

Where does Cropper Street fit in?

Lancashire / Liverpool/Parish Records/Gregory
« on: Friday 16 November 07 22:22 GMT (UK)  »
Cany anyone out there help/advise?

Have marriage entry for John Potter/Elizabeth Gregory 1816.  Both "of this parish"  No father's names given.  1841 Census gives me their ages as 45/42 - so estimated birthdates 1796/1799.  Am looking for their births - Elizabeth at the moment. IGi has helped me identify 5 Elizabeth Potters around right years 1793/1797. 2 x 1799 and 1802.

What other evidence can I look for?  All suggestions gratefully received.
