Family History Beginners Board / Apprenticeships records
« on: Friday 23 February 24 10:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any apprenticeship records linked to my grandfather and great grandfather.

My great grandfather, Charles Romang, is shown as an apprentice watchmaker in the 1871 census. He is based in 1 Old Compton Street and working for Henry E Saquel a Swiss watchmaker.

In 1881 he is living with his uncle John Pattle in Poplar working as an Engine fitter on iron ships and must have had an apprenticeship in the docks. I know he worked for R & H Green & Silley Weir Ltd.

My grandfather Auguste Romang was also an apprentice ship fitter in the London docks after leaving the army in 1920.

Is there anywhere i can look or approach regarding records of apprenticeships.

Thanks

Armed Forces / R.F.A Farrier Sergeant Lucas
« on: Tuesday 14 June 22 12:12 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching the life of George David Lucas who was the son of a sergeant in the 10th Hussars. From researching his discharge & pension records i have found that he was a Farrier sergeant in Battery A, C Brigade Royal Field Artillery but unlike other records their is no list of his postings. His record does show he served for 22 years and 211 days before leaving the army in Canterbury to become a publican. Part of his service was 3 years and 9 months in India the rest spent in Britain. From his census records and birth records of his children i know that he joined the army at Kingston in 1842 from the East Middlesex Militia. Was in Woolwich in 1862, Dorchester Barracks as a shoeing smith in 1865, was based in Newbridge, Ireland in Ireland in 1868, a shoeing smith RHA at Woolwich barracks 1871, and finally Canterbury in 1877.  I'm trying to fill in the gaps regarding his service especially when and where he was in India. From the RFA history his Battery and Brigade seem to have been the Bengal Horse Artillery before amalgamation but he only spent a short time in India (cant find a census record 1861). Any suggestions on where to look for more details information on his career ? Thanks

The Common Room / Drillmaster Sergeant
« on: Wednesday 18 May 22 11:34 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my wifes family and have found links through three generations to the Royal Artillery. I have hit a bit of a wall with Jesse Lucas born around 1783 and shown in the 1841 census as a Drillmaster sergeant who married a Charlotte Debney in 1815 . In the marriage banns for his son, George David Lucas a blacksmith / farrier sergeant in the RA dated July 1862, Jesse Lucas is shown as a Sergeant RA. In the Banns for his other children he is listed as a drillmaster. The only military records i can find for a Jesse Lucas are linked to a sergeant in the 10th Hussars, Captain Floyds Troop who served in the Peninsular campaign and at Waterloo the record shows he was born in Dorset in 1783 and enlisted in London in 1804. He was discharged from the Hussars in 1821 seemingly due to ill health. My question is did Jesse Lucas serve in the 10th Hussars first and then join the RA or are these different people. I can find no records for Drillmaster Jesse Lucas in the Royal Artillery. Can anyone help with this one? Thanks

Scotland / James Wood a coal miner from Scotland
« on: Saturday 12 December 20 15:41 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the birth records for James Wood. He was a coal miner in New Hartley Northumberland who was born born between 1830 and 1833. The census records for New Hartley between 1851 and 1891 show his birthplace as Scotland but no more detail than that. He was married in 1861 to Mary Anne Lloyd, his fathers name is given as Robert Wood. I've looked at the Scottish census information and the few matches I've found show the individuals have either emigrated to the USA or have remained in Scotland. The closest match is for a family in Ayton Berwickshire, or a family in Roxborough but in both cases the individuals seem to be in Scotland in 1851 when James Wood is first recorded in the New Hartley census. I'm wondering if its possible that the family still registers James Wood as living in Scotland even though he has moved to England.

Denbighshire / William Lloyd
« on: Saturday 12 December 20 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the birth date and place of William Lloyd a gardener who lived in Shropshire. Census information shows he was born in Llanrwst, Denbighshire in about 1804. His marriage records show he was living in Vale Royal, Cheshire in 1847 and that his father was a farmer named William Lloyd. Unfortunately these seem to be common names in the Denbighshire area and this is all the information i currently have.

Cheshire / William Lloyd possibly William Roberts Lloyd
« on: Tuesday 08 December 20 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the birth record for William Lloyd born between 1848 and 1853. According to the census of 1901 he was working as a gardener and was born in Over, Cheshire whilst the 1891 census states birth place as Chester. His wife was Martha Henry and his father according to his marriage certificate was also William Lloyd a gardener. One of his sons was called Percy Roberts Lloyd i believe that his mother was a Sarah Roberts hence his sons middle name. I believe he served in the Suffolk regiment as William Roberts Lloyd the records for which would indicate he was born around 1852, private William Lloyd is shown in the 1881 census as being born in Vale Royal, Cheshire. There appears to be another William Lloyd born in the same period in Over whose father John Lloyd was a shoemaker. I can find no birth record that matches on either free BMD or the GRO database? i've also struggled to find him in the census prior to 1881. Any help please?

Northumberland / Elizabeth Guy Death
« on: Monday 23 November 20 16:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to confirm the death date of my great grandmother Elizabeth Guy (nee Pickering) she was married to Thomas Guy a Tailor who died on 27th June 1938 in Wallsend, Newcastle. I believe she died in the 1930's either in Wallsend or in Tynemouth.  I've looked for obituaries in Newspapers but didn't find anything. There are possible records showing either 1931 or 1935 in Tynemouth or 1937 in Wallsend (Northumberland South). It is possible she was living with her daughter Margaret's family the Grigsby's at Ferndale Avenue Wallsend but the death record for Elizabeth guy in 1937 includes middle initials JC which do not appear to be present in any other records. Any advice please  :-\

Northumberland / Beck ancestry 1823
« on: Monday 17 August 20 21:24 BST (UK)  »
I have a mystery I've been working on for a while. I'm researching the Beck family from New Hartley and have got back as far as John Beck who appears in the census for 1841 in Cowpen as a 15 year old coal miner birth year 1826, he also appears in the census for 1851 (Westoe) & 1861 (Cowpen) as being born in Newcastle in 1823. I'm trying to find his parents so i can work back. In 1841 and 1851 he lives with a widow called Ann Cleghorn born between 1777 and 1781. His marriage record in Aug 1851 to Eliza Henzell in South Shields shows his father as a John Beck, gentleman, i'm assuming this means he has independent income? neither John or his wife can read.
I have also found a baptism record on Family search for a John Beck baptised on 25 Apr 1824 at All Saints, Newcastle, Father John Beck, mother Jane, from Silver Street, Newcastle, father is a shipwright but am not sure if this is the same John Beck as on the marriage certificate. I'd be grateful for any help here as i seem to have hit a wall with the Becks and am not aware of John Beck having any siblings.

Northumberland Completed Look up Requests / Thomas Guy Birth record
« on: Monday 17 August 20 00:30 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find the birth record of my Great Grandfather Thomas Guy and have had no luck on the GRO lookup, FreeBDM or Ancestry / Find my past. He is shown on the census records from 1871 to 1911 as being born in Bedlington in 1870. His parents were William Guy and I believe Mary Anne Winley. He lived most of his life in Seaton Delaval and worked as a tailor. His sister was born in Druridge and his brothers in Seaton Delaval.
