Travelling People / Romani DNA update
« on: Sunday 19 February 23 19:59 GMT (UK)  »
Thought I would share with you all the latest DNA evidence.

I have been saying this for over a decade, that I strongly believed all the Romani paternal lineages whom are in Y Haplogroup H-M82*, likely shared a common male ancestor some where way back in all our family trees, regardless our surnames used today.

Thanks to Romani men being Big Y 700 DNA tested, we now have far stronger evidence then ever before! In the attached image, each paternal Romani lineage marked in the Red box, clearly all descended from the same Parent SNP, known as Y Haplogroup H-BY47158.

In layman's terms, the early evidence is clearly showing each paternal lineage did indeed descend from the same Parent SNP, Y Haplogroup H-BY47158. Each Romani paternal lineage comes from various regions around Europe and the UK as well as the USA.

Romanies from Finland, Scotland, England / UK, Moldova, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Germany, Ireland by way of Scotland, and Israel are represented in the image.

As more Romani men get themselves Big Y 700 DNA tested, we can expect to see much more of the same, that all the Romani paternal lineages whom are in this rare South Asian Y Haplogroup H-M82, very likely all descended from the same Parent SNP, Y Haplogroup H-BY47158.

Travelling People / Colonial American Buckley lineage identified
« on: Sunday 06 November 22 14:25 GMT (UK)  »
Recently a Mr. Buckley Y DNA tested and was placed in Y Haplogroup H and he is a Y DNA match to me and other Romany paternal lineages. The Y DNA participant passed away, but a close family member is in charge of his Y DNA test.

They trace their Buckley family back to John Darius Buckley b. unknown date in Maryland?, d. unknown date in Wilson County, Tennessee, husband of Sarah Hall.

John Darius Buckley & Sarah Hall had a son named William Hall Buckley b. 1773 in Virginia whom married Rebecca Johnston.

I can not personally vouch for the genealogical research done on this Buckley family tree, I can only vouch to the fact that the Y DNA participant tested positive for Y Haplogroup H* which is South Asian in origin and because he is a Y DNA match to me and to other Romany Y DNA participants, it is a very safe conclusion that this Buckley lineage is also of Romany ancestry.

Most every Romany of the UK knows Romanies ended up in the American Colonies late 1600's - 1700's era, but not enough research attention gets made towards this small piece of Romany history to the American Colonies, but thanks to Y DNA evidence, little by little we are identifying those Romany paternal lineages whom carry this rare South Asian Y Haplogroup H-M82.

No other European population is known to carry Y Haplogroup H-M82 outside of the Romany male population of Europe.

To date, of the Colonial American Romany paternal lineages identified through Y DNA evidence, are of the Lock / Locke, Ingram, Bailey, Campbell, Buckley surnames whom were all in Colonial American late 1600's, early to mid 1700's era. Those are the surnames known to me whom have been Y DNA tested and positive for Y Haplogroup H-M82, there maybe even more Romany paternal lineages of Colonial America that have not been identified as of yet.

The history books talk about Romanies of the UK having been transported to the American Colonies as convicts, oral family stories also talk about ancestors having been transported, and using today's DNA technology, there is clear evidence some Romanies remained in the American Colonies, willingly or against their will.

I don't know about you all, but for me, finding another Y Haplogroup H-M82 Colonial American Romany paternal lineage, is quite exciting stuff!  :)

Mr. Buckley ( deceased ) is a member of the Y Haplogroup H DNA project.

It is quite unfortunate that the American history books fail to make any mention of Romanies having been transported to the original 13 American Colonies, and virtually nothing was known about who they were.
But there is obviously more to the Romany story then the stories everyone knows about, because part of the stories ended up in the American Colonies who's stories are only now starting to be better known.

For me, what is the most fascinating part of the Colonial American Romany paternal lineages, they all have direct ties to Colonial Virginia. While it does not appear this Buckley lineage spent a lot of time in Colonial Virginia, it does appear that they too resided in Colonial Virginia for a short time period before moving on.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Romany DNA project update, news!
« on: Friday 25 July 08 01:15 BST (UK)  »
Got some interesting news to report. I pushed for a new Deep Clade SNP test back in April 2008 and got my wishes.

15 men in Y Haplo Group H, which included several Romany men, volenteered to pay in advance to have this new Deep Clade SNP test be created. Today some of the test results came in.

The new SNP test was intended to help break down Haplo H in to smaller sub groups, and it did exactly that today. Men from India, Pakistan, England, USA were involved in this trial testing.

The British Romany men who participated in this trial testing, were previously in Y Haplo Group H.
After the Deep Clade SNP test, we are now in Y Haplo H1a.

The Rom surnames involved included Locke, Campbell, Carter, Bailey, and all are in Haplo H1a now.
That is a very important step which will one day help identify which specific people in India and Pakistan the European Roms likely descended from.

The trial testing is now over, and this new Deep Clade SNP test is now available to the general public who are in Y Haplo Group H*. So all future DNA participants who are found to be in this rare DNA group, which is also found among some Romany men, now have the option to order this new test.

Now knowing the proven and suspected Romany descendants are all in Y Haplo H1a, gives us far more information then we had in the past. So regardless our surnames, the Roms who are involved in DNA testing, now know we all share very similar DNA at a much deeper level then we knew about previously. That is very exciting news! :)

This new SNP test has also helped exclude some men of India, who are now greatly distanced from the British Rom descendants, and at the same time showed us that some men of India and Pakistan are also in H1a. That is a very important piece of the puzzle because the Indian and Pakistani tribal histories of the men in H1a may one day help explain the Romany migration to Europe.

This was but a small step today, but a big leep in our knowledge in Rom male DNA.

Travelling People / A few Roms in the WWI Draft records
« on: Wednesday 09 July 08 14:41 BST (UK)  »
This week I started transcribing Romany in American WWI Draft records.
Using the USA census records to find them first, I have been able to locate some Roms who signed up in the draft.

Here is but a small list of Roms.

Seth Lovell b. August 08, 1880, registered in Norfolk County, Virginia, Brown eyes, Brown hair

Seth Boswell b. December 21, 1898, registered in Will County, Illinois, Brown eyes, Dark hair

Nathan Boswell b. December 25, 1882, registered in Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia
Hazel eyes, Black hair, Horse Dealer

William S. Boswell b. January 04, 1897 in Oak Grove, Kentucky, registered in Norfolk County, Virginia
Brown eyes, Brown hair

Sylvester Boswell b. April 04, 1899, registered in Norfolk County, Virginia, Brown eyes, Brown hair

This is only a sample of the research I am doing on the American lineages. This is a work in progress, and will have many updates to come.
