Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Some beginners queries
« on: Monday 18 September 17 00:15 BST (UK)  »
My queries may have been raised before. If so please point me in the direction of earlier replies.

My questions are as follows;

1. I am getting a lot of matches on GEDmatch and Family Tree DNA on the same part of my 16th chromosome. 20 to 40 cM's. Is it likely that we all relate to each other via the same root or is the chromosome you match on random?

2. If you have 2 long string matches with someone on different chromosomes, does this mean you link via two different roots?

3. If you match someone through more than one root, could this mean a predictec 4th cousin could actually be a much more distant cousin?

If this sort of thing is simply described somewhere, please can you let me know where to look.

Many thanks

Stephen

The Common Room / Person to person links in Ancestry trees
« on: Friday 14 July 17 07:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

In MyHeritage you can pick two people in someone's tree and it will show how they are linked.

Does Ancestry have this feature somewhere? I haven't found it yet.

Alternatively, how do people quickly find links from a person of interest to the home person in someone else's big ancestry tree?

Thanks

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Strategy for finding common link
« on: Sunday 30 April 17 08:49 BST (UK)  »
My AncestryDNA test shows that i share DNA matches with 3 people in the USA. I am in England and my family back for many generations are English or Welsh.

I have been in touch with 2 of the people in the US and they have absolutely no info on any English or Welsh ancestors. We are all keen to know how we are related.

WGolden is extremely likely to be my 4th to 6th cousin.
KB is a good match to be my 4th to 6th cousin.
CB is KB's paternal grandmother and is highly likely to be my 4th to 6th cousin.

WGolden is a good match to be KB's 4th to 6th cousin and highly likely to be CB's 4th to 6th cousin.

WGolden knows very little about his ancestry.

CB's grandmother was called Mary Anne Golden.

It seems to me that I must follow the Golden trail back to England if I can.

I do have an ancestor by the name of Ernest Golden Howlett in Utah but can't find where his Golden middle name originated.

Any suggestions what I should do next to pull everything together and join the dots?

Thanks

Stephen

US Lookup Requests / Thomas J Scott and Nona C Moore - Emanuel, Georgia
« on: Monday 10 April 17 07:42 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for help to find the parents of Thomas J Scott and his wife Nona Moore. My Ancestry DNA test is pointing me in their direction as relations. Possibly their grandparents are my shared direct ancestor.

Thomas was born around 1873.

Thomas and Nona are husband and wife in Emanuel, Georgia in 1930.

Thanks

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / GEDmatch - Archaic DNA matching
« on: Sunday 09 April 17 11:05 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone tried matching their DNA to the Archaic samples.

I am not sure what the answers mean and what does the heat map at the bottom of the matches mean?

Thanks

Hello

Probably been asked before and if so, please point me in the right direction.

Ancestry results indicate an estimated 17% Scandinavian result (5% Irish, 72% British).

I have traced back several generations on most branches and no sign of any Scandanavians or Irish.

17% seems quite high so how many generations do I have to go back to find the Scandinavian roots?

Thanks for your help.

Hello

I am looking for help to find out what happened to my great grandmother Catherine Jane Elias when her mother took her to the USA when she was a child. She only seems to have been in the US for a few days/weeks before returning to Wales. Other chatters on here have helped me find her trip out but no-one can find her coming back. The story so far is to be found here.... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=761031.0

Kay99 found the following info...

Found them I think on New York Passenger Lists - Mary Hannah Elias  Age 25  Arrival New York 4 Oct 1880 on Ship Arizona  which departed from Liverpool   Also with her were daughters Hannah age 5 and Catherine age 3.

Possibly not the same family but on the 1881 USA census there is a Thomas Elias born Wales 1850 and listed as married working as a coal miner in Ohio https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YBG-RQQ?mode=g&i=20&cc=1417683

On the GRO Birth Index in addition to birth of Catherine Jane Elias in 1875 with mothers maiden name Harris also lists two more births in the Newport Reg District
Hannah Elias March Qtr 1874 Newport  Vol 11A  Page 249
Mary Ann Elias June Qtr 1878 Newport  Vol 11A  Page 245

Free BMD lists the possible death of a Mary Ann Elias Age 0 March Qtr 1879  Newport Vol 11a    Page173

When did Cassie come back to the UK and who did she travel back with?

Thank-you

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Catherine (Cassie) Jane Aston (born Elias)
« on: Tuesday 13 December 16 07:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello friends

Would someone be able to double check where by great grandma Cassie was born. I think she was born in 1875 and I'm pretty sure it was Monmouthshire. Some census say Bedwas, one says Caerphilly. However, there is a Catherine D Elias in the 1881 census born in Abercarn. Is this my great grandmother?

I think it must be as she has a sister called Edith in the census and names one of her daughters Edith (my great aunt).

Can I get a second opinion please?

Many thanks.

Stephen

Good afternoon all

I have come across a rather lovely photo of my Grandmother when she was young. Unfortunately, it has been marked over time and I wondered if anyone could assist with tidying the photo up for me.

Many thanks in advance,

Stephen
