Derbyshire / Skinners Hall, Edale

On the 1911 census I find that my grandfather's family is living at Skinners Hall, Edale.  It sounds the sort of place I should be able to find something out about - but all I have managed to get from googling is that the house was used for mill employees and in earlier times orphans had been brought down from Scotland to work in the mill and were put up at Skinners Hall.  Does anyone have any further information about it.  I was wondering particularly if it was still attached to the mill in 1911, or if it had become a private house?

World War One / Which William Kirkland?

I know my grandather, William Arthur Kirkland, joined up in WWI - I have a photograph of him in uniform.  He was born in Stamford, Lincoln but at the outbreak of war he was living in Edale, Derbyshire.  I thought one way to track down his army career was through The National Archives Medal Records - but there are no less than 56 William Kirkland's (and variations thereof).  Does anyone know of a way of narrowing down the search - I really don't want to pay £2 a view in the hopes of finding him - and even then without knowing his regiment or number the search will be inconclusive.  Any suggestions gratefully received.

World War One / Help needed with GRO War Deaths 1914-18

I am trying to find a death certificate for my grerat uncle Private Charles Robinson 335427 2nd Bn Royal Scots.  I believe he died on 26 September 1917 during the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele).  I assume his body was never recovered as his name appears on the Addenda Panel at the Tyn Cot Memorial.  I have searched the GRO War Deaths Other Ranks 1914-18, but unfortunately his name does not appear there.  I have been in contact with the Regimental Museum and they asssure me that there should be a death certificate somewhere in the records.  Please can anyone tell me where I should be looking.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Derbyshire / Hope to Edale Railway

Does anyone know when the Hope to Edale Railway was constructed and which company built it?   ???  I know my great grandfather John Henry Kirkland (born in Belper in 1868) worked on the line and moved with his family to Edale.  He subsequently worked on railways in Africa (no idea which part) while his family continued to live in Edale.  I thought I might be able to pick up his overseas adventures by tracing the company.  But any suggestions welcomed.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / 1841 census look-up - Robinson

Please can someone help me :)?  I am looking for Robert Robinson of Hope.  His occupation was cordwainer and at the time of the 1851 census he was married to Ann (nee Longden).  It is possible he was the son of John and Elizabeth Robinson (also of Hope) as John too was a cordwainer.  The 1841 census may confirm this (or not!).  Many thanks.

Is anyone able to help me please?.  I am looking for the family of George Cowie who was born in Rathven in 1813.  He was married to Jane Thompson and at the time of the 1871 census they were living with their family at Heigh Street, Elgin.  I would be really grateful for any information.   :) Many thanks

I am looking for William Gerrard who was probably living in Stocks Lane, Great Boughton, Chester.  He would have been about 26 at the time of this census and his occupation was probably 'gardener'.  I am also hoping to pick up information on William Gerrard senior (I am assuming this is his father) who would have been 54 at this time.  His profession was 'master gardener'.  They may have been living in the same house - on the 1851 census they were living a few doors apart!

:) Please does anyone have any information on this family ?  I have got back as far as William Gerrard's marriage to Elizabeth Salisbury on 16 April 1849.  At the time they were probably living in Stocks Lane, Gt Boughton, Chester.
