No. 405 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron was the only R.C.A.F. Pathfinder Squadron of the war and was formed from Group 8.

Geeves was one of five members of a crew of seven who lost his life 02, Jan. 1945 when their Lancaster 111 PB477 was blown out of the sky over Rohrau, Germany, near the small town of Neufringen.  Their mission:  to bomb Nuremberg.  They never made it.  Only two members of the crew survived; they were captured the following morning and interned at Stalag Luft 1 until they were freed by the Russions in May of 1945.

Gerry served his first tour in the North African Campaign where he took part in the battles of Tobruk, El Alamein, Tunis, Egypt, Malta, etc.  Flying in Wellingtons, he survived five crashes and was the lone survivor of one these crashes – none of which were enemy-related.

Posted to No. 405 Squadron (Group 6), 11 June 1944, he flew 25 operations with S/L Donald John (Tex) McQuoid, D.S.O., D.F.C., D.F.C. & Bar. and would have continued with this crew had McQuoid not been injured in a motorcycle accident on 31, Dec. 1944.  McQuoid was admitted to hospital and the crew learned that their captain would not be available for duty until Feb. 1945.  As Gerry had just one more op to complete before returning home for good, he was given a choice by his commanding officer….either wait until McQuoid returned to active duty or fly with another crew.  He chose the latter and lost his life.  He and his crewmates are buried in Durnbach War Cemetery in Bayern Cemetery.  Gerry was my uncle.

Armed Forces / SGT. Sidney Rhodes R.A.F.
« on: Thursday 02 May 13 04:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am researching Sgt. Sidney Rhodes who was a member of No. 405 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron in WW II.  His aircraft (PB-477) took off from Driffield Airfield at 15:54 the evening of 02 Nov. 1945 on a raid to Nuremberg.  Rhodes was the Flight Engineer on this flight and was only one of two survivors of the 7-man crew.  I am researching this crew and the only one who continues to give me trouble is Sgt. Rhodes.  I have the following information on him:

- born 14 March 1912 in Kingston-upon-Hull, Humberside - son of John Thomas Rhodes and Kate McQuaid
- married 08 Sept. 1934 to Elizabeth Hastings West Gardiner
- enlisted in R.A.F. 07 Nov. 1942
- taken as POW 03 Jan. 1945 - as was one of his crewmates, D.G. Plyley, Canadian, when their Lancaster PB-477 aircraft was shot down; both were interned in Stalag I, North Compound, Room 3, Barth, Germany
- I have a hand-written document that gives the names/addresses of each of the inmates in Room 3 of this camp and Rhodes gave his address as 112 Tanfield Grove, Bilton Grange, Hull
- I have a War Office document #344-267-1 (POW questionnaire) which shows his enlistment date and information that he trained at Dalton Battle School.  It does not show if he served with any squadron other than No. 405 (R.C.A.F.).  Information on this questionnaire was scarce, to say the least
- date of death according to his death certificate was 22 July 1985 in East Riding General Hospital
- his address was given as 38 Watson (or Matson) Court, Bridlington N. Humberside
- informant was name of living person removed, son - from  Hull

I have tried to trace his son, name of living person removed, but to no avail.  Furthermore, I don't know if there were other children and if so, I don't know where (name of living person removed) ranks in the family.  Given that he was born after 1934, he could still be alive and able to fill me in on his father's war experiences prior to his dad's flight with No. 405 Squadron.

If anyone is able to help, I would be so grateful.  Yes, I could order his war records, but it would be costly for me.  I have tried to trace him through your country's archives but this is a site that I find extremely intimidating.

Hi,

I have a bit of an outline on this Sidney Rhodes but would love to find out more about him.

Sidney Rhodes was born 14 March 1912 in Sculcoates.  The registration of his birth was delayed into the June Qtr.  His mother's maiden name was McQuade.  He died in Bridlington, E. Yorkshire in July of 1985.  Although it has been a while since I worked on this family, I remember reading somewhere that Sidney and his wife had two children, although I could be wrong.

- his mother's first name
- father's name
- date of parents' marriage
- date of his marriage to Elizabeth Gardiner (have been told that he married this woman.)
- children? -could be they are living in Bridlington?  Maybe that's why Sidney retired there.
- date of his death

I would be so grateful for any information on this man.

Many thanks,

Canada / Death of Mary Jane SPEAKMAN
« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 05:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for the possible death of Mary Jane SPEAKMAN which I believe took place between 1953 - 1956 in the Toronto area according to directory listings I have.  Her last address was 35 Gamble St. East York, Toronto, where she is shown as "Mrs. Ben Speakman".  With her is her father-in-law, James.  There is no sign of Benjamin in this listing as there was in 1935 and 1940.

Mary Jane TATTERSALL (Jennie) Speakman was the wife of Benjamin Speakman and mother of Doris, born abt. 1921, Ernest, born abt. 1923 and Robert, born abt. 1924.  It is my understanding that Benjamin and Mary Jane's marriage and the subsequent birth of their children took place in the U.s.  There might also be another daughter, Barbara, however, I don't know when she was born.  I am grasping at straws here as there could be two scenarios ....#1, Benjamin and Mary Jane split up prior to 1940; #2, she really did pass away.

In 1957, Benjamin is shown with a new wife, Elizabeth Jean Alliss, known as Jean.  I have no idea when they married.

I would be most grateful for any help.

Thanks much.

Canada Lookup Request / 1891 Census Look-up
« on: Wednesday 18 April 12 05:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have been unable to find an ancestor of mine on the 1891 census for Ottawa, Ontario and am hoping that someone else can give this a try for me.  Maybe I just can't see for looking!

James MATHER was born 1834 in Montrose Scotland.  He would have been 56/57 on the 1891 census and living with wife, Margaret, aged 60/61 and their only child - a daughter, Elizabeth, 12-13 yrs.  They would most likely be in the Wellington Ward.

I have James on the 1881, 1901 and 1911 censuses, however, he has escaped me in 1891!

I would be so grateful for any help.

Canada / MATHER Brothers
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello  :),

I am hoping that someone on the list may be able to help me in locating marriage dates for two Mather brothers who married women with the same first name.

(1)  Robert Fenton Mather b. 23 January 1884 in Ottawa, Carleton, ON/d. 21 Oct. 1936 in Vancouver, B.C.  The 1911 census shows him in Vancouver living with his parents, Robert and Maud Mather, age 28.

Robert's first wife died in 1918.  Sometime thereafter, he married Ruth I, Owen/s - possibly in Vancouver.   I doubt there were any children from this marriage.  I have no information on Ruth other than a printed ship manifest dated 1924 showing Robert and Ruth as part of the ship's crew.  Robert is recorded as R.F. Mather, purser; Ruth, as Ruth O. Mather, stewardess.  Both were "returning to Vancouver" (these words were pencilled in).  The document is a very difficult one to read and all headings are virtually impossible to decipher.  As Robert worked for the Kingsley Navigation Co. their  home base was obviously in that city.  When he died in 1936, he was working in a management capacity.

(2) James Frederick Mather (brother of the above Robert) was born 05 Feb. 1888 in Rainy River, District of Algoma in northern Ontario/d. 26 March 1960 in Chulmleigh, Devonshire, U.K.

He married Ruth (née Mather) Griffith.  She was born in 1879 in Prestwich, Lancs./d. 17 Nov. 1958 in Vancouver and was the daughter of Wm. Penn Mather and Emily.  She emigrated to the U.S. in 1892 along with her family.  She married Walter Wells Griffith in Providence, Rhode Island in 1909.  Walter died in Providence, R.I. in 1917.  There were no children from this marriage.

The only thing I have to go on with James Fred. and Ruth are their two daughters.  The first was born in 1923; the second, in 1924.  The obituary I found for Ruth indicates there were no further children and names only the two daughters she and Fred had.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Devon / MATHER/MATHER
« on: Saturday 25 February 12 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

This post concerns a Scottish Mather who married a British Mather.  Both names are spelled the same but pronounced differently.  The Scottish pronunciation has a hard "a".

James Frederick Mather, born 05 February 1888 in Rainy River District of Algoma, northern Ontario/died 26 March in Chulmleigh, Devon, UK.  He married:

Ruth Mather, born 12 June 1879 Prestwich, Lancashire.  To my knowledge they were married in Vancouver and lived there all their married life.  I

I do not have a date of marriage for this couple; however, Ruth was a widow when she married James Fred. Mather.  Her first husband, (last name Griffith) died in 1917 in Indianapolis USA.  I have no background on how this couple met.  James Fred. served in WW1 and maybe that is how they they came together.   Ruth Mather died in Vancouver 17 Nov. 1958; her husband was the informant on her death certificate.

The fact his death occurred overseas really leaves me scratching my head.   Maybe James Fred. and Ruth lived in Chulmleigh for part of the year.  From what I understand, this is a beautiful tourist area.  Further to this, I don't believe this family lacked the funds to enjoy life.

I haven't found a burial for James Frederick Mather - just a death.  However, wife, Ruth is buried in Vancouver.

If anyone has any ideas, I would be most grateful.

Angus (Forfarshire) / JAMES MATHER, ARCHITECT, MONTROSE
« on: Thursday 15 December 11 01:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,  :)

I am looking for help with the emigration date/details of the above James Mather who was born 09 Dec. 1833 in Montrose, Angus.

I believe James emigrated to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada sometime in 1872.  He might have sailed from either Montrose or Greenock along with his wife, Margaret (Pyper) Mather and daughter, Elizabeth Jane Low Mather.  James would have been age 39 in 1872; Margaret, age 42 and Elizabeth would have been age 12.

His port of entry would have been the port of Montreal and he would have made his way to Ottawa from there.  James Mather was a prolific architect and designed many residences and businesses in this city including Laurier House, the home of one of Canada's Prime Ministers.

There is a plaque dedicated to him which hangs in the Montrose Library which his daughter had designed in his honour.  James Mather left the balance of his estate, through his daughter, to Montrose Infirmary, Montrose Library and Dorward House.

If anyone can help with the details of James's emigration, I would be very grateful

Canada / Mather/Brown Family Ottawa
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 03:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi  :)

I'm back on the trail of other Mather family members again and would certainly appreciate some help.

I am looking for the deaths of the following 3 persons:

Margaret Mather (maiden name, Pyper) who was born in Scotland 04 Nov. 1830 and emigrated to Canada with her husband, James Mather and young daughter, Elizabeth Jane Low Mather in 1872.  I have this family on the 1881, 1901 and 1911 censuses.  I can't find any of them in 1891.  I suspect that Margaret died sometime between 1882-1900 as James is shown as a widower in 1901 and 1911.  I am looking for her death/burial.  Margaret was living at the time of her daughter's marriage.

Margaret and James Mather's daughter, Elizabeth Jane, was born 28 Sept. 1860 in Scotland.  On 09 June 1882, Elizabeth married Robert Brown who was born in Quebec 16 June 1854.  He was the son of John Brown and Eliza Walsh of Ireland.  Census entries I have for Robert show him as a soap manufacturer with the exception of the 1911 census.  Opposite #32, Robert Brown, age 56, is shown as Col. (Colonel?) living in the St. George Qtr. of Ottawa at 328 Chapel St. with his wife, Elizabeth, and father-in-law, James Mather, Architect.  It's difficult to make out Robert's employer....I can't make out the first word....the next word is Civil (etat-civil?).  There is no sign of Robert after 1911.  I know he was not alive in 1927 when his father-in-law, James Mather, died.

Lastly, the death of Elizabeth (Mather) Brown....
It stated in her father's will that everything went to his daughter and upon her death, the proceeds of her estate were to be given to 3 charitable organizations in Montrose, Scotland on her father's behalf.  (She left no descendants.)   I have proof that this transaction was carried out in 1945, so, I am assuming that she died sometime between 1940-1945 - more than likely in Ottawa.

I would be so grateful for any help on these people.
