Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1861 lookup, please - William Attwater
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I think I've finally made a breakthrough thanks to Ancestry's free access to the National Probate Calendar.

There's a William Attwater (b1799) living in St. Pancras, Middlesex, London on the 1861 census (transcribed as Attwates on Ancestry). It would really help nail things if someone could please let me know where he was born and who he's living with.

Many thanks in advance
Les

Hi

My 3rd great-grandfather was John Marchant, Governor of the  Debtor's Prison, Halifax.

In 1841 census, he's not with therest of his family at the prison. When I had access to census, I never managed to find him, but it has recently been suggested that he was an enumerator of the census. I wonder if anyone could confirm this for me from the census documents.

In 1841, the place was known as the Gaol for the Court of Requests, Halifax. It was in Hanson Lane. Presumably, that's the most likely district for him to have been the enumerator for.

Thanks in advance,
Les

Hi there

I'm hoping some kind soul with access to the Brighton, St. Nicholas parish registers or a transcript could do a lookup for me please.

I'm interested in any additional information (fathers' names etc.) about the marriage of John Broadbent and Caroline Collingham at St. Nicholas, Brighton on 12th February, 1830.

Many thanks

Dublin / Time to bite the bullet
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 19:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I've been putting off dipping my toe in the frosty waters of Irish genealogy for too long now and as I've made better progress than I could ever have reasonably expected with my English ancestors I think the time has come to widen the field.

The trouble is I really don't know how to kick-off and was hoping some of you good people could point me in the right direction.

What do I know as a starting point? Not a great deal, I'm afraid. In 1871 my great grandfather, a 23 year old bootmaker, George Scott, was a boarder at a house in Liverpool and gave his place of birth as Ireland (as he did in 1891 and 1901 - I can't find him in 1881). When he married in Birkenhead in 1876 he named his father as George Scott, a shoemaker. Family legend has it they came from Dublin. A family I believe to be related gave their origin as Dublin in 1871. No sign of these families in England before 1871.

... and that's all I know so far. Any suggestions as to where I should search would be gratefully received.

Cheshire / Derby Street, Birkenhead
« on: Monday 26 May 08 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I would like to locate any photographs of Derby Street, Birkenhead - now demolished.

For those who know Birkenhead, this was the terraced street running from Oxton Road through to Westbourne Road. Alec Green's cycle shop was on the corner with Oxton Road.

A long shot, I know, but thought it worth a punt.

World War One / Numbers on Medals
« on: Wednesday 21 May 08 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I read somewhere that WW1 medals have the regimental number of the soldier they were awarded to on the rear.

I've got good quality photos of my grandfather's British War Medal, but no sign of a number. Was what I read incorrect or am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks in advance

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Great Uncle George
« on: Sunday 11 May 08 23:47 BST (UK)  »
A 2nd cousin in Canada sent me this scan of what I think is a wonderfully evocative scene. The guy on the front left is my great uncle George. He was serving with the Royal Navy Canadian Volunteer Reserve during WW1 when this taken.

The date on the back is 18th March 1916 - Halifax NS (HMCS Niobe).

I'd love to see what you can make of this photo. I've had to reduce the size a bit.

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / FTM - Including photos
« on: Thursday 27 September 07 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Am I going stupid?   ???

I seem to remember a switch in FTM so that you could decide to include photographs directly in your database or, if you preferred, merely a reference to where the photo is.

I can't find the option - did I just dream about it?

Any help gratefully received!

Thanks
Les
