Surrey / Burials - Newington
« on: Wednesday 19 May 21 10:38 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for where there might be burials in the St Mary Newington/Newington Butts area of Surrey in the period 1800-1850. I have a death on 25th January 1850 of a Mary Trent that I can't find a burial for. I'm also searching for her husband... he would have likely died pre-1841 and was names William or John.

Does anybody have any ideas about where burial were taking place for this area of Surrey at the time?

Many thanks!

Hi All,

I have a tricky Storey bunch (seems a common name) that I've made some progress on in the last couple of years.

John Storey born c.1821 in Chirton was son of John Storey and Margaret Dobson (sister of the famous architect John Dobson). I have DNA links to the Dobson family and John Storey is found with remarried mother, Margaret Price in 1841.

Margaret Dobson (1797-1884) married John Storey on 24 Oct 1815 at Tynemouth - I have an image from the BT's. The two witnesses were Margaret's siblings so no help there in identifying John.

Margaret remarried to John Price on 19 Jan 1825 at South Shields. She is listed as a widow.

I am unable to find a death for John Storey Snr.

I also have a confusing DNA match... The match's grandmother was Agnes Storey b.1886 South Shields, daughter of James Brown Storey b.1854 and Elizabeth Jane Saunders b.1857. I believe I have accurately traced James Brown Storey's line back as follows:

Parents: George Gibson Storey b.1831 Gateshead m. Mary Brown b.1834 South Shields
Grandparents: John Storey b.1807 Swalwell baptised at Whickham m. Jane Gibson b.1808 Howden.
Great Grandparents: George Storey b.1782 Whickham m. Elizabeth Gardner b.1785 Gateshead.

This is where I think... Aha! Maybe George is brother of *MY* John Storey... so I carry on tracing the line...

George Storey's parents are: John Storey d. 1795 Swalwell bur. Whickham and he married a Mary.

This John Storey and Mary had the following  children (including George) that I have been able to find - all baptised at Whickham:
Isabel b.1780
Catherine b.1785
John b.1787
Ann b.1790

Aha! A sibling named John at around the right date for Margaret Dobon's  husband!
HOWEVER: This John seems to have lived past 1825 and married Sarah Lumley on 25 Aug 1810 at St Andrews, Newcastle Upon Tyne and potentially died in 1869 in Gateshead.

The DNA match shares 70cm with my great aunt. John Storey Snr is my great aunts Great Great Grandfather.
Three of the shared matches (excluding her grandson) have common ancestors as John Storey b.1821 Chirton and his wife Elizabeth Hewitt (from Cumberland).

I'm still at a loss of trying to find my John Storey's birth (b.1821) and a record of John Storey Snr's death (d. before 1825?) and parents.

Any help appreciated!

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Missing Census? 1861 Mile End Old Town
« on: Saturday 30 May 20 00:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am trying to find Gloucester Street which I believe comes under Mile End Old Town. William Street's western end connects to Gloucester Street and it is Enumeration District 5. I have looked online trying to go through the districts but notice there is only numbers 1, 2, 5, 7 and 18 for Mile End Old Town online.

Do we know if the other's are still extant? I'm trying to find a 4x Great Grandmother who lists her address as 17 Gloucester Street on 18th Oct 1862.

Thank you!

Hertfordshire / Sarah Glenister - Berkhampstead
« on: Wednesday 21 August 19 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am trying to trace a Sarah Butterfield born c.1803 in Berkhampstead, daughter of Joseph Glenister.

Sarah marries as a widow in 1853 and lists her father as Joseph Glenister, occupation: Sawyer. Her spouse then seems to disappear and she then uses her first husband's surname, Butterfield, from at least 1861-1872.

A marriage between William Butterfield and Sarah Glenister at Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire in 1821 has a witness named Joseph Glenister who signs his name (likely her father).

Link to Sarah on my tree on Ancestry: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/8499087/person/-940510861/facts

I haven't been able to find a Sarah dau. of Joseph Glenister.

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks,

Richard

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Any experience with Baptist ancestors?
« on: Saturday 21 October 17 10:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have continued to make small breakthroughs with my HOLT family from Buckinghamshire in the 17th and 18th centuries. It now looks as if there is enough evidence to conclude that they were baptists. I had a search for the name HOLT carried out in the BucksFHS wills database. This led me to a possible family member in Wing (Samuel HOLT) that was son in law of William Nutkins, a baptist preacher. The family I know that were connected to me (Robert HOLT of Haddenham will dated 1741 - cousin of my direct line ancestor William Holt of Crowell m.1705 in Radnage, of Longwick, Blacksmith) turn up in a will of Henry Goss, (a mention in will - have not yet looked at original) but Goss was also a Baptist and Simon Holt, father of Robert is mentioned in the will. Simon Holt's wife was Ann Hickman of Cuddington, a Robert Hickman (whom I belive to be her brother) is mentioned in the Episcopal Visitation Book, 1662 as an 'anabaptist'.

I belive the reason why my HOLT ancestors are mostly missing for the CofE parish records (baptisms and marriages) is because they were baptist. There was a congregation in Ford, (a hamlet in Dinton) that served the local area including Cuddington. Their records start in 1688 and were published in 1912. I have located and purchased a copy of this book to see of it holds any more information.

For now I have seemed to determine, that my line is as follows with some element of guess work:

MY DIRECT LINE LINKS TO WILLIAM HOLT OF LONGWICK:

Simon Holt of Westlington in Dinton (also connected to Winslow) d.1709 (maybe born c.1625? a total guess based on possible generations) - son Simon Holt d.1740 (maybe born c.1650 - again a guess) - this relationship is based on the name in common.

Simon Holt d.1740 of Weslington/Cuddington has a son called Robert Holt d.1741 b.1678. I believe Simon's brother was William Holt of Longwick born c.1647 (from age at death) and d.1735.

William Holt born c.1647 has a son William Holt born c.1678 (baptised in Princes Risborough) who married in Radnage in 1705 and moved to Crowell. Simon Jnr., William Jnr. and Simon Snr. were all blacksmiths.

THE FAMILY SEEM TO BE CONNECTED TO:

William Holt of Dinton (also connected to Winslow) born c.1715-20 married first to Winnifred Hunt (widow of Francis Hunt - Clement Hunt of Dinton was also baptist) - his son was Ephraim Holt. I am assuming that William was brother of Simon. Ephraim entered into indemnity when William Holt Snr of Longwick moved into the parish of Princes Risborough - maybe his cousin?

If anyone has any thoughts or experience with where to look for records of baptist ancestors I would be most grateful to hear from you.

Thank you.

Richard

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Scott Family of Whitchurch/Creslow 17C
« on: Saturday 07 October 17 20:53 BST (UK)  »
While researching the wider Holt family that I know have to connect to my direct line in some way I came across this:

CLIFFORD PAPERS - Reference: Add MS 65141 - British Library
ff. 100-101v Ephraim Holt, of Dinton, county Buckinghamshire: Avis Scott, of Creslow, county Buckinghamshire: Thomas Scott, of Creslow, county Buckinghamshire: Creslow, Buckinghamshire: Agreement rel. to farm lease at Creslow between Avis Scott, Thomas Scott and Ephraim Holt: 1704: Copy.

Ephraim Holt had a daughter named Avis baptised at Dinton in 1698. There is also the name Scott Holt in the 1720's and 30's. I am wondering is Avis Scott was an older generation of the Holt family. I haven't yet been able to find anything else about Avis or the family apart from what I have below. She did leave a will, proved in 1708 but I wanted to see if I can find any other information before ordering it as it may not even connect to any Holt's. Thomas Scott had clearly died by 1704 (the date of the above document) - I think his name appears becuase he was on the lease. I'm wondering in Ephraim decided to help out as Avis was 71 at the time although it looks as if a possible son (Thomas Scott, gentleman of Creslow) inherited from this family line (also possibly the Thomas in the above agreement)

Any help appreciated.

Thanks :)

Richard
