Essex / Emma Reeves born c.1852 and family brick wall
« on: Monday 10 July 23 23:27 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking back on my family tree and found that I've done part of it wrong when it comes to Emma Reeves. Turns out I have added the wrong information for her and it's actually a different person altogether.

I can't find a birth or anything pre-1881.

This is all the confirmed/correct information I have got on her:

- Married Joseph Dawson 1878 Leytonstone Essex, a spinster, father John Reeves
- 1881 living in Leyton with family as Emma Dawson born London
- Married William Henry Gardner 1886 Bethnal Green:

William Henry Gardner, 42, bachelor, same address, father Henry Gardner (decd), licensed victualler
Emma Dawson, widow, 33, 3 Seabright Gardens, father John Reeves, shoemaker

- 1891 living in Walthamstow with family born Walthamstow
- 1901 "  " born Bethnal Green
- Died 1909 in Leyton

It looks like she had two children before she married Joseph, both listed as Dawson in 1881 census:
- William T born c.1873
- Frederick Daniel born c.1876 (my 2nd great grandfather)

I can't find births for either children.

I have ruled out a couple of Emma Reeves by researching. These are:
- Emma Frances Reeves, who I originally thought my Emma was. She was born 2 Nov 1852 in Bethnal Green to John Reeves, shoemaker (as is stated on Emma's second marriage) and Emma Frances Purnell (who was also known as Sarah? on the census). I have recently began researching this Emma and turns out she is the one who married Samuel Silverton in Bethnal Green 1869. I have traced this Emma and Samuel all through the censuses and I'm confident this is a separate Emma and not mine. There is no mention of my Emma having a middle name.

- Emma Sophia Reeves born in Walthamstow to James and Mary Ann in 1851. She died in 1854.

Unfortunately I'm at a dead end as to who my Emma Reeves is and would appreciate any comments or leads.

Staffordshire / Francis Snape born c1874 - help with year of death
« on: Monday 12 June 23 22:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm researching Francis Snape who married Harriet Louisa Chittleburgh 1903 Burton upon Trent (same family as this topic - https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=751089.0)

From his marriage cert he was born about 1875 his father Francis a labourer. I have found a Francis Snape born 1874 in Adlington Lancashire to parents Francis and Alice, father a labourer. I am fairly certain this is who I'm looking for.

However, I cannot find a death record for him. He had three sons with Harriett, two of which were adopted out of the family. Last one being born in 1907. In 1911 census, Harriett states she is a widow and living in Preston Lancashire.

I suspect he died between 1907 and 1911.

Leonard George Snape was their third son and was adopted into a family in Leicester. In 1939 he is with his wife Lydia and someone else called Leslie Edwin Snape born 4 Aug 1924. I find a similar entry for Leslie at another address but date of birth is 3 Apr 1924. I have researched a bit into his parents and it seems that this is the same person and he's been entered twice. I think he is related in some way to my Snape's but I can't quite see the connection.

If anyone can help it'd be appreciated.

Staffordshire / Savidge/Chittleborough family - need help
« on: Thursday 08 June 23 22:51 BST (UK)  »
Margaret Savidge married John Henry Chittleborough in 1896 Derby. They had two children William Henry b.1898 Burton upon Trent and Lily May b.1905 in Lincoln.

William Henry later goes by the surname Savidge (as per marriage record and 1939 register, at death he's registered as Chittleborough).

John Henry is nowhere to be found after 1901 census. I have recently found this 1911 census:

Margaret Savidge, 37, married, Burton-on-Trent
William Savidge, 12, son, Burton-on-Trent
Cissie Savidge, 6, daughter, Burton-on-Trent

My concern is that William and Cissie's ages add up to William Henry and Lily May's years of birth, and the age is right for Margaret.

Is Cissie actually Lily May? But her birth was registered in Lincoln not Staffordshire? I can't find a suitable birth record for a Cissie Savidge/Savage.

On Lily's 1930 marriage cert she says her father is William Savidge, deceased. If this is Margaret on 1911 census, why does she say she's married?

I have also found a 1906 marriage for a John Henry Chittleborough, widower, father William Henry (which is correct). Doesn't this mean that Margaret died before 1906?

If anyone can help it would be appreciated  :)

Essex / Doris McGregor Walthamstow
« on: Saturday 01 April 23 14:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi I'm trying to trace a Doris McGregor who lived in Walthamstow from at least the late 1910s. Haven't got much information but may have siblings called Edna and Gladys. I have 11 postcards addressed to her all at 8 Longfellow Road. I also have one postcard addressed to 'Grandad' at the same address.

I'm interested in following her life, where she ended up etc. so it would be fantastic if anyone can help. I've not been able to find her in any census as I haven't got much to go on but may be at that address on the 1921 census.

Thanks

Norfolk / Sarah Searle? born around 1765
« on: Tuesday 28 February 23 21:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone hoping I could get help with this brick wall that I haven't been able to get past for a few years.

My 6th great grandmother is Sarah Searle? (or variant of surname) who was born around 1765 (estimated from burial record). She married Robert Chittleburgh in 1792 in Topcroft.

Her children's baptism records list her surname as both Searle and Scarlett.

Her marriage banns to Robert have her name as Hannah (and what looks like Scarle). Hannah is then crossed out and Sarah written in the margin. I know her first born daughter was named Hannah so maybe Hannah is a close relative of hers, maybe mother?  It's also the earliest I've seen the name Hannah in that branch of the tree.

I can't find a possible baptism for Sarah under any of the surname variants and I've looked at surrounding counties too. Because of this maybe she was born under her mother's maiden name but without even a definite surname to go on I can't research any further.

Any help is appreciated  :)

Norfolk / Jeremiah Spalding born c1800 Saxlingham Nethergate
« on: Sunday 18 December 22 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone, I am researching Jeremiah Spalding. In 1841 census he is born c1801, 1851 census born c1799. He died in 1852 Saxlingham Nethergate age 53, the son of Jeffrey and Frances Spalding, the only record to prove his parents.

I cannot find his baptism, even though I have the baptisms of all of his siblings.

I only happened to chance upon Jeremiah because I was researching his eldest sister Elizabeth who was living with him in 1841.

Can anyone find the missing baptism please? I have tried different spellings of his name and father but nothing is showing.

Thanks in advance
