Lanarkshire / Marriage of John McFadyen and Jean Renfrew
« on: Tuesday 12 March 19 22:53 GMT (UK)  »
I've found two marriage records, both in September 1806, and I need advice on how to pick the most probable one for my ggg-grandparents. 1. 6 Sep 1806, High Church, Paisley between John McFadyen and Jean Renfrew. 2. 26 Sep 1806, Barony between John McFadyen and Janet Renfrew. I don't think a pair of handloom weavers would have two ceremonies. I always heard that my ggg-grandmother was a Jean. I think that the first record is the one to go with as Jean was from Paisley, although the couple lived in Calton. I have neither a date of birth or death for John. I do know he was listed as deceased on Jean's death certificate. I welcome any comments or advice on this matter.

Lanarkshire / Joseph McFadyen
« on: Sunday 05 November 17 19:40 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph McFadyen was listed as witness in the Glasgow Barony register for the birth of his nephew James on 1 July 1807. Joseph could be the brother (or father?) of my great great Greatgrandfather John McFadyen, a weaver in Calton, who is still proving elusive as I cannot find anything about him in the records apart from his marriage to Jean Renfrew in September 1806 in Paisley High Church. Is anyone looking for Joseph McFadyen?

Lanarkshire / Still searching for John McFadyen, handloom weaver, Calton circa 1810
« on: Sunday 16 October 16 16:07 BST (UK)  »
John McFadyen, my three times Greatgrandfather, was a handloom weaver in Calton. That's about all I know except that 1. He married Jean Renfrew of Paisley in September 1806. 2. She was born in Paisley in 1783 and died in Calton in January 1855. 3. John had a brother, Joseph, who was present at the birth of two of John's children. Since I can't find any Scottish birth records for these gentlemen, could they have been born in Ireland? I know a lot of Irish weavers came to Scotland. Where should I look?

Lanarkshire / Black and McFadyen
« on: Tuesday 23 August 16 03:08 BST (UK)  »
This is a long shot, but does anyone know of two sisters, Lily and Jenny Black, who were probably born between 1880-1900. I think their father married a McFadyen girl. Lily and Jenny used to come through to St Andrews from Glasgow to visit my Granny; I think they were cousins to Granny's husband, long deceased. I recall the ladies telling my sister that she looked like great aunt Annie. That would have been Ann McFadyen ne้ Dow, my great great grandmother. I know I'm grasping at straws but hope springs eternal.

Lanarkshire / Shawmuir and Bankhead Cottages, Pollok Estate
« on: Friday 05 August 16 03:26 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in finding out about the above cottages. How would one manage to get residency there? Would the occupants be employed by the Pollok Estate?

My great great grandfather, John McFadyen, is listed as living in Pollok Estate, Bankhead on the 1881 Renfrewshire census. According to the schedule this house had seven rooms with one or more windows. He died there on 17 April 1882. His widow, Ann McFadyen ne้ Dow, died at Shawmuir Cottage, Pollokshaws on 17 December 1895. James and Ann's son, James Angus McFadyen, is listed in the marriage indexes with the address of Bankhead Cottage, Pollokshaws, Eastwood. James Angus may have lived with his parents until his marriage on 28 January 1881 to Jane Forrester Orr. Her address is Kinning Park and that's where my grandfather, James, was born.

Is there a record anywhere of past occupants of these cottages?

Lanarkshire / Hand loom weavers, Calton. Estate.
« on: Wednesday 20 July 16 01:53 BST (UK)  »
I knew my GGG-grandfather, John McFadyen, was a hand loom weaver in Glasgow, but I did not realize the significance of Calton as his place of residence until today! His wife, Jean/Jane Renfrew, died on 24 January 1855 at Clyde Street, Calton. Does anyone know of other McFadyens living in Calton late 18th, early 19th centuries? Perhaps these McFadyens came from Ireland; I read that there were many Irish immigrants who settled in the Calton area.

There is also a connection to Bankhead or Shawmuir Cottage, Pollokshaws. GG-grandfather James McFadyen died there on 17 April 1882, and his widow, Anne Dow, died there on 17 December 1895. Am I right in thinking that this cottage was on the Pollok Estate?

Ayrshire / Rev James McFadyen, United Presbyterian Minister Patna/Straiton
« on: Tuesday 19 July 16 00:02 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have more specific information about the following McFadyens? I have bits and pieces only, and would be interested in finding out more about Anne Dow's family. Rev James McFadyen was my GG-grandfather, married to Anne Dow 18 February 1841. James Angus McFadyen, born 13 May 1851, was my Greatgrandfather; John was born 13 May 1851 but died a year later at the manse in Patna. There were two daughters, Mary, born in 1842, and Jane R M, born in 1847 in Canada West. I did find out that Jane was a school mistress in Stenton Parochial School in Lothian or Midlothian.

Family History Beginners Board / McFadyens in Paisley, Scotland circa 1750

I am keen to find out more about my great great great grandfather, John McFadyen, who was a weaver. He married Jean Renfrew in Paisley in 1806. She was born in 1783, parents James and Margaret ne้ Stewart. I would like to determine which of the Isles the McFadyens came from. Any help or suggestions would be most welcome. Hilary
