Whilst going through my Nan's journal, I came across some notes she made about how she meet Grandad.
In 1914 Nan,s parents ran the Coach and Horses at Handbridge (Chester) where the Boy's from Eaton Hall members of the Duke's" Yeomanry came to drink. I have always wondered about two photographs that I have from my parents showing soldiers in their barracks which was always a mystery, as I know that Grandad was in the RFC as he won a Boxing Championship at Farnborough in 1917.
(It would also appear that he won the Army/Navy Championship in 1915 according to Nan).
As my research indicates that the Yeomanry was actually a Hussar Formation before going to an Infantry Formation in 1916 (I think)
I am attaching two photos of some of the boys but I cannot make out the cap badge. I believe the pictures may have been taken at Brighton as the reverse of one gives the name of one trooper ( George Newlands) and the horse my have been called 'Snake'??!!
Can any one help me (PS my Grandfathers name was John Davenport and he was a 'TT' according to Nan, what ever that meant?)

I am trying to confirm the circumstances of the death of my GG Grandfather James Patten, Master of the coastal schooner 'The Alma' lost with all hands off Angelsey in 1875 with two of his sons. The only definite family information is that my Grandmother, Grace Victoria Patten was born in 1897 at 7 Browns Row, Hawarden- Saltney, Flintshire. Her parents were John Patten b1864 - Runcorn? and Mary Graham (nee Armstrong) Patten b 1866 - Scotland
(1881 census had a Mary Armstrong living at 1 Williams Row, Hawarden - Saltney, Flintshire. Aged 16 and working as a domestic to the Davies family)
My information has John and Mary married in June 1885, at St Mary's, Chester (CE/14/9/375)
James Patten b 1834 - Scotland, married to Louisa (nee Ward) Patten b 1843 in Runcorn.

My grandmother had a photograph of a gentleman in uniform that I am trying to place.
I know my grandmothers father and her grandfather were sailors (merchant) sailing out of Runcorn in Cheshire.
I also believe that they were all Masters of coastal schooners sailing up to Scotland and down to southern England at least.
The attached photograph is a puzzle, mainly as it looks more like a military uniform, but also what period was it from?
The background also gives me the impression that it was not taken in England! but I could easily be mistaken.
Can anyone put me right or at least on the right track?

Can anyone please help solve a family mystery?  My GG Grandfather William A Hall was born in County Clare in 1851 his mother Mary was born in Adlington, Cheshire, and on the 1881 census they were both living at Great Moor, Bramhall, Hazel Grove, Cheshire.
This appears to be a lot of travelling for this period, William in 1881 was recorded on the census as being a Supervisor PO Civil Service.
I have not been able to track his father which may give me a clue to all the travelling, can anyone help?
