Armed Forces / British Navy Officer in New Zealand 1925
« on: Sunday 27 November 22 06:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for some guidance in finding information about a British royal navy crew member.

I know that Fred (Freddie) Hawkes, born in Halling, Kent 1897/8, served with the British Navy, Chatham Division 19706, and was in New Zealand between April & July 1925. However, I don’t know how he got to NZ or when he left. Is there any way of finding the crews of British Naval ships visiting or stationed in NZ at that time?

Kent Lookup Requests / Malling Union Workhouse - Hawkes children
« on: Sunday 10 July 22 04:00 BST (UK)  »
If anyone is going to the Kent History & Libary Centre in Maidstone, I would be appreciative of a lookup of the Malling Union Workhouse records for the Hawkes children.
In the 1871 census, Harriet (10), Dulcibella (8) and Mary Ann (6) Hawkes were inmates. I wish to find out what happened to Harriet & Mary Ann Hawkes as I can find no census, death or marriage records for them. Hopefully, the workhouse records will shed some light.
I know that Dulcibella was still in the workhouse in 1881 (labeled and idiot!) and she died in 1884 and was buried at Snodland on 29 July 1884. I can find no records for the other two.

« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 08:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have managed to transcribe most of the 1765 Will of Charles Chester. However, I am stumped with the name of a parish/town in Lincolnshire.

What I have is...
Also I give and bequeath unto my sister Sarah Robinson the wife of James Robinson of ______ in the county of Lincoln, farmer.

Can anyone fill in the gap?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marriage Licence
« on: Monday 09 November 20 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
The attached is a 1 September 1712 marriage licence between Thomas Pating/Paling and Elizabeth Chester.

I am struggling to figure out who the witness? is mentioned. What I have decyphered is "Thomas Paling Nether Broughton in county Leicester, carpenter & _______ Chester, Thurmaston in county _______, Stockingmaker".

Can anyone help with filling in the two gaps indicated?

Also, who would the people be that are mentioned in this part of the marriage licence, e.g. witnesses, parents, etc.

Lincolnshire / John Connelly birth
« on: Friday 06 November 20 21:07 GMT (UK)  »
My great great grandfather, John Connelly, came to New Zealand in 1861. When he joined the 1st Waikato Militia his recorded details were: Name; John Connelly. Place/Parish of birth; Lincoln, Lincolnshire. Year of birth; 1825, Trade or calling; Engraver.

I have not been able to find any birth record that looks close. Any ideas?

P.s. His 1897 death record had "Not Known" for his parents but had Falmer as his father's occupation.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / David Ross esq from where?
« on: Monday 26 October 20 09:02 GMT (UK)  »
I have struggled to decipher where David Ross is from in the attached. David died on 9 September 1844 in St Cuthbert’s Edinburgh. From what I can make of his death record (attached) he died at the New Royal Hotel Princes St Edinburgh and the cause of death was Liver Compt & other diseases. Under name and designation it has David Ross esq from _______. It is that last word that I cannot make out. I have attached most of the page that David’s record is taken from in the hope that it may assist with the transcription.

Angus (Forfarshire) / David Ross
« on: Wednesday 21 October 20 21:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been looking for the birth/baptism record of David Ross for ages, it seems, and thought I should now seek assistance.
The solid information I have is as follows (originals attached):
-   The January 1855 Edinburgh marriage registration for Alexander Ross & Jessie Currie states that Alexander was aged 25, his occupation is Tradesman Lithographer, he was born in Dundee, his father is David Ross (Lithographer).
-   Alexander Ross died in November 1856 at St Giles, Edinburgh, aged 27. His parents were recorded as David Ross, Clerk (Deceased) and Jean Ross, nee Fyfe.
-   I managed to locate an entry in the Dundee School Wynd United Presbyterian Church Kirk Session Record, 20 June 1828 – “Johan Fife, she confessed that she had been guilty of fornication and stated that David Ross an unmarried man was the father of the child”. There was no subsequent kirk session record for either Joan Fife or David Ross.

So what we know is:
-   David Ross was an unmarried man (probably in Dundee) in 1828.
-   He died before 1856.
-   His occupation could be Lithographer or Clerk.
Any ideas?

Dunbartonshire / Andrew Mitchell – Lookup Request - Cumbernauld Kirk Session Minutes
« on: Tuesday 04 February 20 03:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am not sure if anyone will be in a position to fulfil this request but I thought I would ask anyway.
I have been trying to find information about my 3 x Great Grandfather Andrew Mitchell.
I have not found; birth, marriage, census or a death record for Andrew.
What I do know about him is:
His wife was Margaret Gordon (1811 – 1874).
They had children…
-   Mary Mitchell (1837 – 1909), married William Fleming in 1856.
-   Janet Mitchell (1838 – 1910), married Robert Nisbet in 1860.
-   Elizabeth Mitchell (1841 – 1891), married John Barr 1863.
-   John Mitchell (1845 -     ) **
The Cumbernauld 1841 census shows Margaret Gordon (25) with children Mary Mitchell (5), Janet Mitchell (3) and Elizabeth Mitchell (2 mths) living in Condorrat. The 1851 census shows Margaret Mitchell (40) with children Mary Mitchell (14), Janet Mitchell (13), Elizabeth Mitchell (8) and John Mitchell (5, on parish relief), all living in Condorrat.
Andrew was either a weaver (as indicated in the marriage and death records for daughters Mary & Elizabeth) or a Flesher (as indicated in the death record of wife, Margaret, and the marriage record of Janet).
A potential clue is that an Andrew Mitchell was a witness at the 1863 marriage of Elizabeth Mitchell in Whitburn, but I have not found a linkage.
I was in Scotland last year (I live in NZ) and visited the Falkirk records office looking for information about my Fleming ancestors. I looked through the Cumbernauld Kirk session minutes and took photos of many Fleming entries. I recently looked back at these photos and luckily found an entry for Margaret Gordon on the same page as a Fleming entry.
That 1845 entry has the report of the recent birth of an illegitimate boy child to Margaret Gordon the widow of Andrew Mitchell, the father being William Pender, farmer in Condorrat.
This would indicate that Andrew Mitchell died before 1845 and probably in 1840 given that his daughter, Elizabeth, was 2 months old in the 1841 census and his wife, Margaret, was recorded with her maiden name in that 1841 census.

I suspect that there is more to learn from the Cumbernauld Kirk records. The good thing is that the Kirk session minutes are easy to search as they have surnames in the margin. These kirk session minutes are held at the Falkirk archives (I am not sure if they have been scanned, but if so, they should be available at other major Scotland record offices).

What I am after is the following…

From CH2/79/3 1822 – 1860 Cumbernauld Kirk Session Minutes.
-   Images of all the appearances of Margaret Gordon/Mitchell and William Pender relating to the birth of their illegitimate child in 1845. I.e. the initial minute entry in 1845 and subsequent meeting minutes featuring Margaret or William.
-   Images of any mention of Andrew Mitchell from 1822 to 1840.
-   Images of any mention of John Mitchell/Pender from 1845 to 1860 (Given that he was on parish relief in 1851 there may be some poor law reference to him).
From CH2/79/14 Cumbernauld communion roll 1835 – 1839
-   Any mention of Andrew Mitchell or Margaret Gordon/Mitchell
From CH2/79/12 Cumbernauld burials register 1817 – 1846
-   Any mention of Andrew Mitchell

Stirlingshire / Parents of Patrick Stirling who died in 1688
« on: Saturday 27 April 19 06:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

I am hoping that someone can give me some advice about how to progress the following.

I have been researching my Stirling past and have been stuck at Patrick Stirling who married Isobell Carmichaell 2/12/1675 in Edinburgh. I have been trying to find anything that would point me to the birth and parents of Patrick with no success.

Recently I started reading the "Stirlings of Keir" (by William Fraser) and came across a group of names that were quite familiar to me; James Jack, John Burne and Robert Moir. They are all witnesses at the baptisms of Patrick and Isobell's children. They are also the husbands of the three youngest daughters of Archibald Stirling and Jean Mushet of Kippendavie. Archibald being the fifth son of Sir Archibald Stirling of Keir (1588 – 1630).

James Jack is married to Helen Stirling. John Burne is married to Margaret Stirling and Robert Moir is married to Jean Stirling.

It seems too much of a coincidence that witnesses with these names should be at the baptisms of Patrick's children (attached is a table summarising the baptisms and witnesses).
My immediate suspicion is that Patrick is a brother of Helen, Margaret and Jean but there is no mention of Archibald having a son called Patrick (Archibald did have a son George that died youngish and John who was the resultant heir). Neither is there any mention of a Patrick Stirling in the "Stirlings of Keir" for the right period of time.

I had hoped that there might be a Will that would help.
- Patrick died around 1688 but no will I have found.
- Archibald died around 1645/46 (according to The Stirlings of keir) but I have not found a Will for him.
- Archibald’s wife, Jean Mushet, had a Will dated 1682 (according to The Stirlings of keir) but I cannot find it on Scotlandspeople.

Any ideas on what I should do next? I do not live in the UK.
